Chapter 283: Chapter 283 The Truth According to Others

Su Mu didn’t visit her grandmother. After slapping Fu Shinian, she could no longer control her emotions. As she walked out of the ward and under Wei Shaoqin’s worried gaze, she turned and headed to the nearby emergency staircase. Wei Shaoqin stood still for a moment before following her.

Although he really wanted to find Fu Shinian to vent his inner anger, he was more concerned that something might happen to Su Mu at this time.

The emergency staircase was very quiet. Su Mu was sitting on the steps between two floors below when Wei Shaoqin found her, hugging herself tightly, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably, as if she had suffered a great injustice.

Wasn’t it a great injustice? Anyone who had gone through what Su Mu was experiencing would not be able to remain calm and accept it.

Wei Shaoqin took off his coat and laid it on the empty space next to Su Mu:

"Can you sit somewhere else? I’m worried you’ll catch a cold."

Su Mu remained unmoved, as if she hadn’t heard. Wei Shaoqin repeated himself twice with the same result. In the end, having no other choice, he picked her up. Before Su Mu could react, he had already put her back down, seated on his coat, and sighed with relief.

Su Mu looked at him, her eyes red:

"Wei Shaoqin, why are you so good to me?"

Wei Shaoqin was taken aback by the question:

"Why? Why should there be so many whys? The world is so big, with so many people. It’s rare to find someone who pleases the eye. Since you won’t be my woman, the only reason I can stay by your side is as a friend, right? Fate is decided by the heavens; perhaps the reason they had me meet you is that they knew you would be wronged and arranged for me to be there with you. Otherwise, why wouldn’t I be kind to someone else?"

Su Mu smiled and said nothing more.

Wei Shaoqin sat down beside her and looked at Su Mu’s listless appearance, feeling a profound sense of heartache:

"I’ve always told you Fu Shinian is not reliable, but you wouldn’t believe me. Do you really regret not listening to me now? Could I possibly harm you?"

"Yes," Su Mu nodded. "I very much regret it."

If she had known it would end this way, maybe she would never have chosen to start from the beginning.

Seeing Su Mu express regret, Wei Shaoqin should have been happy, but instead, the sour feeling deep in his heart grew stronger. It turned out that more than seeing her sitting here sorrowful, he hoped she could find happiness, even if it wasn’t from him—that was still good.

"Regret is too late now. I don’t fancy you anymore, not a divorced woman," he retorted.

Su Mu nodded lightly:

"You will meet someone better."

Wei Shaoqin smiled slightly and said nothing more, just silently sitting with Su Mu, neither speaking of leaving nor offering comforting words.

——

Wen Han hadn’t come to the hospital to see Su Mu these past few days because he had been busy. Today, he finally made some breakthroughs, but the results were somewhat baffling. Rushing to the hospital after getting the results, he had wanted to check on Su Mu first but was informed by the nurse that she had already been discharged.

Standing at the door of the ward, Wen Han hesitated whether to call Su Mu to ask about her health, but then thought he was going to the top floor to find Fu Shinian, and perhaps it would be better to ask Fu Shinian directly instead of calling Su Mu.

On the rooftop, the first person Wen Han saw was Ji Nanfeng. Ji Nanfeng was surprised by Wen Han’s arrival but welcomed him warmly:

"Wen Han? What brings you here?"

"There has been some progress in the Su Mu kidnapping case, but there are still some aspects I don’t understand, so I want to ask Fu Shinian."

Ji Nanfeng smirked slightly:

"Ask Shinian? He didn’t even go to the scene, so what could he know?"

Wen Han looked at Ji Nanfeng and also gave a faint smile:

"Are you sure he really never went to the scene?"

"He didn’t go. I was with him the whole day, accompanying the old lady at the hospital for examinations." Ji Nanfeng looked at Wen Han with a serious expression: "If you don’t believe me, you can check the hospital surveillance anytime. Those couldn’t be faked, could they?"

Wen Han nodded:

"I will check, but for now, I still need to meet with Fu Shinian. Do you know if he’s resting today, or if he’s not at the hospital?"

Ji Nanfeng looked at Wen Han and was silent for a few seconds:

"He is here, but I’m quite curious, haven’t you always been part of the army? Why are you interested in a criminal investigation now?"

"I’ve been seconded to the major crimes unit since after the New Year."

"I see."

Without much else to say, Ji Nanfeng smiled faintly: "Then wait here for a bit, I’ll go ask Fu Shinian."

It wasn’t long before Ji Nanfeng came back from the ward, accompanied by Qiao Yu. After exchanging a brief greeting with Wen Han, they entered the ward. Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu, worried, did not go far but went to the nearby emergency stairs to smoke.

Qiao Yu was not a smoker, and watching Ji Nanfeng smoke fiercely, he couldn’t help but speak up:

"You should smoke less; I don’t want to have to perform lung removal surgery on you in the future."

Ji Nanfeng snorted lightly:

"Actually, what’s so bad about dying early? What’s the point of living like Shinian, carrying such a heavy burden on his own?"

"Do you feel sorry for him?"

Ji Nanfeng did not respond, but his silence was a clear affirmation of Qiao Yu’s words. Qiao Yu fell into a lengthy silence before finally sighing:

"Actually, compared to Shinian, I feel even sorrier for Su Mu. She was just beginning to see hope in this marriage, and now it’s all turned into this. She’s pregnant now, Shinian can’t be there to accompany her, and they are about to get a divorce soon. Who knows how she will cope with what lies ahead."

Ji Nanfeng took a fierce drag on his cigarette:

"Let them get divorced, it was never a normal marriage anyway. If it hadn’t been for Shinian’s worry about the old lady’s illness recurring and needing a kidney transplant, he wouldn’t have stayed with Su Mu for two years. Now that they’re divorced, Su Mu will never find out that the only reason Fu Shinian didn’t divorce her was for the kidney inside her body. Maybe that’s for the best."

"Is that really for the best?" Qiao Yu didn’t think so: "Even if they didn’t get a divorce, Shinian would never let Su Mu find out about it. I always feel that Shinian owes Su Mu too much, not just the kidney. Even the incident seven years ago when Su Mu mistook Shinian for her lifesaver was a misunderstanding. Su Mu’s feelings for Shinian were based on a mistake. They could have made up for it over the years, but now that’s impossible."

"Now that they are divorced, all those misunderstandings no longer exist, isn’t that good too?" Ji Nanfeng evidently didn’t want to talk about these upsetting emotional affairs anymore. He extinguished his cigarette fiercely into the trash bin nearby: "I don’t know what Wen Han and Shinian are talking about now, but I have a feeling he has discovered something."
