Chapter 253: Chapter 253 She is What I Want

The next day, Fu Shinian’s cold showed no signs of improvement, and as a consequence of his continuous coughing, his entire throat had become hoarse. To avoid infecting the elderly lady, he didn’t even come downstairs, and during mealtime, Su Mu gazed at the empty seat next to her and felt unexpectedly lost in thought.

The elderly lady asked Su Shiyue to take food upstairs to Fu Shinian, but Su Shiyue flatly refused:

"Grandma, I’ll be going back to school in a few days. If I get infected, would you feel at ease with me traveling abroad alone?"

Auntie Wang chuckled upon hearing this:

"I’ll go then."

Su Shiyue glanced at Su Mu across from her, her eyes rolling as she spoke:

"Auntie Wang, didn’t you tell me yesterday that your rheumatism was acting up? You should be careful going up and down the stairs, don’t fall."

"Alright, I’ll be careful."

With a sigh in her heart, Su Mu rose from her seat:

"Auntie Wang, let me go."

"How can that be, you just sit down and eat."

Su Mu offered a faint smile:

"I’ll go."

Their tacit cooperation was so flawless that if she didn’t stand up to play along, she feared she would disappoint their acting efforts. Before carrying the meal tray upstairs, Su Mu also asked Auntie Wang for some pills. It was only after Su Mu’s figure disappeared up the staircase that Su Shiyue could not help laughing:

"Taking these pills is useless; my brother won’t take them."

She thought she was the only one privy to this knowledge, but as soon as she finished speaking, the elderly lady said leisurely:

"It wouldn’t have helped anyway, the pills Auntie Wang gave him are just ordinary vitamin tablets, not cold medicine."

Su Shiyue was dumbfounded:

"Ginger is indeed spicier when it’s older."

This grandmother and granddaughter were using every trick in the book to win back their daughter-in-law’s heart.

Upstairs in the guest room, when Su Mu entered, she felt it was colder than outside, but since all the windows were closed, she didn’t pay it much mind and walked over to place the meal tray on the table. Only then did she look towards Fu Shinian, who was lying in bed asleep. As she hesitated whether to wake him or not, he slowly opened his eyes, showing a few seconds of surprise upon seeing Su Mu:

"Why did you come up?"

His hoarse voice sounded so uncomfortable that Su Mu pointed to the meal tray beside him:

"It’s time to eat."

Fu Shinian sat up and leaned against the headboard, "Just leave it here, you should get out quickly, it wouldn’t be good if you caught it."

After saying this, Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian with an extremely helpless expression. If he truly feared her getting infected, he wouldn’t have kissed her the night before. Now, no matter how Su Mu saw it, it all seemed like a weasel paying New Year’s respects to a chicken.

But since he had said so, Su Mu had no interest in staying any longer:

"Hmm, I’m leaving then. The medicine is on the tray, remember to take it after you eat."

"Alright."

Su Mu turned to leave, and before she stepped out of the room, she deliberately paused to glance at the thermostat by the door. It was set to the same temperature as outside, but it still felt cold to her.

After taking medicine all day, Fu Shinian’s symptoms had not lessened by evening; on the contrary, he had developed a high fever but still stubbornly refused to call a doctor. Seeing him in such distress, Su Mu still decided to call Qiao Yu, who showed no sympathy for him at all:

"Su Mu, why bother with him? Just let him be."

Su Mu: "..."

She wanted to ignore it too, but facing a family that was all pretending just for you, she really couldn’t turn a blind eye.

By the time Qiao Yu arrived, it was already eight in the evening. After greeting the elderly lady in the living room, he went straight to Fu Shinian’s room. He had expected Su Mu to be there but, to his surprise, found only himself. The first thing Qiao Yu did was sense something amiss. He looked at Fu Shinian with a half-smile,

"What have you done?"

Fu Shinian glanced behind him to make sure no one was there, then slowly began,

"I just turned off the floor heating."

"That’s not all, right? Did you open the windows too?"

Fu Shinian coughed once but did not speak. Qiao Yu looked at him with an air of amused exasperation, "What’s the purpose of this self-inflicted hardship? Do you want to move back from the guest room to the master bedroom, or do you want Su Mu to be like she was before?"

"Move back to the master bedroom."

"You admit it pretty frankly."

"So just put on a show, no need to actually prescribe me any medication."

"I don’t want Su Mu to doubt my medical skills."

Fu Shinian was unconcerned,

"It’s just a cold, it takes seven days to recover with medication, a week without, there’s no difference."

"Look at you," Qiao Yu said in a tone of mock frustration, "isn’t everything you’re experiencing now self-inflicted? When she was kind and caring towards you, you didn’t take it seriously, and now that she’s decided to divorce you, you suddenly remember how good she used to be. It’s despicable."

What Qiao Yu said was all true, and Fu Shinian didn’t dispute any of it, merely responding indifferently,

"I’ve confessed to her."

This was an outcome Qiao Yu had not expected, even casting deep doubt on what he had just heard,

"You? Confessed?"

"What’s with that tone? You think I can’t?"

"I never imagined you, of all people, would have anything to do with confessing. Who are you? Fu Shinian, the pride of heaven, always strategizing and untouchable, and yet you’ve stooped to do this?"

Fu Shinian chuckled lightly,

"I may be considered a model of success by many, but success isn’t accidental or innate. If I don’t even know what I want, or don’t strive for it even when I do know, then perhaps I would never have reached where I am now."

"So you’ve come to understand now?"

"Yes," Shinian admitted without hesitation, "I’ve understood. Su Mu is what I want."

At this, Qiao Yu laughed,

"You’ve realized it not too late, at least not after the divorce. But what I’m curious about is, what was Su Mu’s reaction to your confession? Did she accept?"

"She said she’d think about it."

"A wise decision," Qiao Yu observed with a smile, "She can’t just accept you again on the grounds of a few words from you, after all the history she’s had, it’s only right to have a trial period, otherwise Su Mu would be too naive."

Su Mu hadn’t come over in time because she had unexpectedly found a bank card in the pocket of her mother’s jacket while going through her mother’s belongings earlier.

This jacket was the one she wore to the hospital after her attempted suicide by gas, which had been left at the sanatorium when she moved there afterwards.

The bank card was a surprise because after her mother got sick, she organized all her mother’s finances. Since she had to pay off her father’s debt earlier, not much was left, and she didn’t remember her mother having an unknown bank card. Yet, this card was indeed found in her mother’s jacket.

The card number was unfamiliar, not one she knew before, but her mother’s bank card PIN was always the same. Because she hadn’t yet gone to the police station to cancel it, Su Mu easily logged into the mobile banking app and was unexpectedly greeted with the discovery of a 20 million yuan deposit in the account.
