Chapter 242: Chapter 242 Yin Flourishes While Yang Declines
Su Shiyue wanted to ask Su Mu to mediate, but was silenced by a glare from Fu Shinian. Only after Su Mu had entered the kitchen did Fu Shinian softly begin to speak:
"What do you mean by this?"
"What, what do you mean?"
Fu Shinian shook the shopping bag in his hand: "Su Mu’s mother had just passed away less than a week ago, and you made her wear this bright red dress. Did you do it on purpose, or are you just thoughtless?"
On hearing this, Su Shiyue was stunned, then spoke with an annoyed expression:
"I, I really didn’t think too much, I just wanted to ease the relationship with my sister-in-law, simply trying to apologize to her."
The old lady spoke up to ease the atmosphere:
"Alright, Yueyue was never one to think things through, and Susu won’t take it to heart."
Fu Shinian glared at her but ultimately said no more.
Actually, according to convention, since a close relative had just passed away, they shouldn’t have celebrated the Spring Festival so lavishly; it should have been sufficient to simply have a New Year’s Eve dinner. The old lady had considered this too, fearing that it would remind Su Mu of painful memories, so she hadn’t planned to celebrate the festival. Yet, the second day after Su Mu returned to the old residence, she approached the old lady.
She explicitly told the old lady she wanted to properly celebrate the Spring Festival, hoping the old lady wouldn’t simplify everything on her account. She said, since her mother’s spirit had reunited with her father in heaven, they surely wouldn’t want her to wallow in sorrow.
At that moment, the old lady believed this was Su Mu’s genuine wish, yet little did she know that Su Mu was entertaining the thought of spending one last Spring Festival with the Fus.
Her keen interest in taking photos today was simply to capture and preserve these joyful moments forever.
The New Year’s Eve dinner was very lavish, Auntie Wang and Auntie Lin had also taken their seats, Auntie Lin sitting next to Su Mu, inquiring about her recent circumstances, while Su Mu was also concerned about her daughter’s return from her holiday abroad, only to hear Auntie Lin laugh despondently:
"She suddenly decided not to come back, saying she will find a chance after the New Year, there’s nothing I can do."
Su Mu consoled her with a few words, to which she said it was fine, but her disappointment and dejection were so apparent, how could it really be fine?
Children look forward to the Spring Festival because there’s no school, they receive New Year’s money, and they can play wildly with their friends. Often, it’s overlooked that elderly people anticipate this festival even more than children do, as it’s the only time when their children, residing far away, come together, allowing them the joy of family reunion.
Auntie Lin only had one daughter, Tang Jia. She must have longed for this reunion, yet in the end, it also resulted in disappointment.
The old lady’s red envelopes broke the brief sadness. She handed out red envelopes to everyone, and upon seeing this, Fu Shinian also took out the red envelopes he had prepared early in the morning, obviously much thicker than the old lady’s. Everyone received one, except for Su Mu.
Su Shiyue was the first to take offense:
"Brother, did you forget one?"
Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu, noticing she showed no concern, and shook his head with a smile:
"No, it’s just right."
"Sister-in-law doesn’t have one."
"She doesn’t want one."
Su Shiyue was about to say something else when Su Mu interrupted her. She pulled out several red envelopes she had prepared before the nap from her pocket, smiled politely, and handed one to each person, including Fu Shinian. Fu Shinian, without blushing or skipping a beat, took it and weighed it in his hand:
"Thank you."
He then put it back into his pocket, feeling not the slightest embarrassment.
The old lady noticed this but didn’t say anything. Instead, she just smiled and called everyone together to eat.
As they ate, Su Shiyue felt something was amiss. He knew that usually, New Year’s Eve dinner is never complete without alcohol, but they were drinking juice instead. Moreover, Fu Shinian was the only man present, so Su Shiyue boldly asked him,
"Brother, don’t you think our family is somewhat unbalanced, with too many women and not enough men?"
Auntie Lin chimed in:
"Yes, that’s true, but it will be better next year if Mrs. Fu gives birth to a little master."
This comment did not dampen the mood since everyone except the couple involved was thinking this way. The two of them didn’t seem likely to separate, judging by their harmonious interaction today, suggesting they had reconciled.
Su Mu just smiled without speaking, and Fu Shinian also remained unusually silent.
The meal ended joyfully, and Auntie Wang and Auntie Lin cleaned up and went off to prepare dumplings. The living room then turned somewhat quiet, only occasionally disrupted by the sound of firecrackers outside. It was then that the old lady proposed:
"Susu, how about we take a family portrait?"
Su Mu smiled slightly:
"Sure."
Su Mu went upstairs to fetch a tripod, adjusted it in place, had the old lady sit in the middle of the living room sofa, Su Shiyue bravely stood alone behind the sofa, while Fu Shinian settled down to the old lady’s left, leaving the spot on the right for Su Mu, who was still adjusting the lighting and setting the timer.
After setting a five-second countdown, Su Mu quickly took his place, gently holding the old lady’s arm. She patted his hand softly, smiling tenderly.
This moment was forever captured by the camera.
Su Shiyue was the first to rush over, clamoring to see the finished product. The old lady cautioned her not to break the camera, and just as Su Mu assured her it was no trouble, he suddenly noticed Auntie Wang and Auntie Lin standing by the kitchen door. They were smiling at the scene in the living room, clearly unable to hide the envy on their faces.
Before Su Mu could say anything, Fu Shinian had already called them over, noting they weren’t exactly family and being in the servant’s role, initially they refused, yet they only came over when the old lady insisted, both wearing smiles.
"You’ve been with the Fu family for the better part of your lives; you are already family to us, thicker than water. There’s nothing to be shy about," the old lady said with a smile, "Us three seniors will sit in front, and let the younger ones stand behind."
Perhaps it was the setting that moved her, or missing her loved ones not present, but Auntie Lin turned her head away and quietly wiped away a tear.
Fu Shinian and Su Shiyue stood side by side in the back row. Fu Shinian’s position to the right remained empty until Su Mu, having adjusted the timer, walked quickly towards it. But as she was about to settle in, Fu Shinian reached out and grasped her shoulder.
Caught off-guard, she looked up at him, and the frame froze there.
After the shot was taken, Su Mu went to see the final image. She initially wanted to delete it and retake the shot; however, unbeknownst to her, Fu Shinian had appeared behind her and spoke,
"It’s good."
Su Mu didn’t look at him, "I don’t think it is."
"If you don’t like it we can take another one, but don’t delete this, keep it for me."
Su Mu didn’t respond, but she also didn’t delete it; she was surprisingly agreeable today, which everyone regarded as a good sign. However, Fu Shinian felt otherwise, always suspecting that Su Mu was contemplating saying goodbye, wanting to capture what she wished to leave behind through photographs.
