Chapter 207: Two Negatives
Chapter 207: Chapter 207: Two Negatives
After Jiang Bei moved back, Bishui Yuntian became completely desolate. This wasn’t Su Mu’s first time staying alone in Bishui Yuntian without Fu Shinian. Throughout the two years of their marriage, such days were numerous, yet no instance had ever made her feel the bone-chilling cold like this one.
She masochistically submerged herself in this frigid loneliness for two full days, seldom going downstairs and rarely speaking. Auntie Lin couldn’t help but worry, but fortunately, unlike last time, Su Mu didn’t go without food. Considering that Mr. Fu was on a business trip abroad, she decided not to disturb him.
It was on the third day after Jiang Bei’s departure that Su Mu went out. Although it was nearing the end of the year, Su Mu still wanted to look for a storefront. After all, this matter had been delayed by various events for a long time, and if she didn’t seize the moment, she might never have another chance.
Luckily, she found several shop spaces in a favored area that would not renew their leases after the New Year. Su Mu checked all of them and took a liking to one that wasn’t in a great location, but had ample space—a two-story storefront at the very end of Wenhua Road, currently housing a stationery business.
Su Mu chatted with the store owner for a bit, and then the landlord came over. Learning that she wanted to create a photography studio, he offered to keep the rent the same for two years without any increases, as he too was a photography enthusiast but too busy to pursue it beyond a hobby.
Su Mu thanked him and paid the deposit on the spot, thereby finalizing the deal.
She went upstairs to see the space, which was large enough for her to partition off a room for a bedroom if all went well. She could probably move in by April.
As she strolled away from Wenhua Road, Su Mu never expected to be stopped by a car. Perhaps the recent matter with Jiang Bei had made her overly cautious, as she instantly raised all her defenses—until the car window rolled down and Zhou Yaxian appeared in her sight.
Su Mu slightly startled, then after a few seconds, politely greeted:
"Mrs. Wen."
"Miss Su, I was just passing by on my way back from work and happened to see you. Do you have time to chat?"
After a few seconds of silence, Su Mu nodded in agreement.
Without looking for a specific venue, Zhou Yaxian told the driver to head to a nearby café after Su Mu got into the car. The two found a quiet private room and sat down face to face. Zhou Yaxian was as elegant and approachable as ever, quite unlike her formidable television presence. She handed the menu to Su Mu:
"We haven’t spent much time together, so I don’t know your preferences. Why don’t you pick?"
Su Mu smiled as she accepted the menu, but eventually, she only ordered a cup of hot water. Zhou Yaxian gave a slight smile and then ordered a cup of black coffee.
Once the waitress had left, Zhou Yaxian didn’t beat around the bush and directly stated her intention:
"I should apologize to you."
Su Mu shook her head, "No need, be it you, Wen Han, or the entire Wen Family, none of you owe me an apology."
The real perpetrator was Chen Huifang; after all, she was no relation to the Wen Family. Despite feeling gloomy and profoundly aggrieved, ultimately, none of it could be blamed on the Wen family.
"You are a sensible and good girl, but the Wen Family indeed cannot shirk their responsibility. I didn’t know about this for long. When Wen Han told me, I could hardly believe it as he is not the type to joke, especially about someone’s innocence. Later, when Shaoyuan called us crying, I finally believed it."
Su Mu cast her eyes down to the table, unsure of how to respond.
"Wen Han has already bought all the photos and destroyed them, but I understand that such an act cannot undo one ten-millionth of the harm caused to you. We simply didn’t want to rub salt into your wounds."
Su Mu was slightly taken aback:
"Is Wen Han sure that he obtained and destroyed all the negatives?"
"Yes, he wouldn’t lie to me."
Su Mu fell silent again.
After she and Fu Shinian confessed this matter in the old house, the incident between Jiang Bei and Rong Shen happened. She didn’t have much time to think it through. After Jiang Bei left, she buried herself like an ostrich, not wanting to think, listen, or look into her situation with Wen Han. So, she never pondered one crucial question.
That was, why would Fu Shinian also be blackmailed into paying a substantial amount of money, if Wen Han had already purchased and destroyed the negatives?
Zhou Yaxian noticed Su Mu’s troubled expression and asked softly,
"What’s wrong? Is there something amiss?"
Su Mu looked at Zhou Yaxian:
"There were two sets of negatives."
"Two sets?"
"Yes, my husband bought the other set."
Zhou Yaxian opened her mouth, wanting to say something but not knowing what to say anymore.
Su Mu insisted nothing substantive had occurred, and Zhou Yaxian believed her. She thought the matter had been concluded—Chen Huifang didn’t know Fu Shinian, and it seemed unlikely that Su Mu would voluntarily tell Fu Shinian about the incident. Yet, it appeared that the person holding the other set of negatives had approached Fu Shinian.
"What about you and Mr. Fu..."
Su Mu shook her head, clearly not wanting to continue the topic:
"Where did Chen Huifang go?"
"Wen Han said that after she took the money and left the Wen Family, she went directly to the airport. The people following her reported that she bought a ticket to Portugal."
"Portugal..."
Zhou Yaxian could see what Su Mu was planning:
"Are you going to Portugal?"
"I just have to get some closure, don’t I?" Su Mu replied with a pale smile: "Chen Huifang would not seek out Fu Shinian on her own. Though I told her I was married, I didn’t disclose who my husband was. She wouldn’t have targeted me, so the only possibility is that someone used Chen Huifang to get to me."
"Do you have any feuds with others?"
Su Mu thought for a moment but couldn’t think of anyone. She had gotten into debt and offended some in the past, but those debts had been settled months ago. Besides, those people wouldn’t resort to such methods even if they wanted to coerce or threaten her.
She knew few people and was generally non-confrontational; everyone was fairly amiable, and no one seemed to want her dead, not even Qin Nianwan, despite the complication of Fu Shinian lying between them.
"If you are planning to go to Portugal to find Chen Huifang, I won’t stop you. I would want clarity too if I were in your position, but please be cautious while you’re abroad. Perhaps I should arrange for someone to accompany you?"
Upon hearing this, Su Mu shook her head:
"There’s no need, Mrs. Wen. I’ll handle it myself. Besides, I haven’t decided whether I’ll go yet."
