Chapter 186: Chapter 186 The Truth

Su Mu’s hesitation was all too visible to Jiang Bei, and just as she was about to say something, she suddenly noticed that the clothes Su Mu was wearing seemed to be the same ones she had worn at their meeting in the hospital the day before. She frowned slightly and asked,

"Didn’t you go home last night?"

Su Mu looked up at Jiang Bei and, after a moment, nodded in admission.

Jiang Bei was surprised because no one knew Su Mu better than she did. To imagine Su Mu not returning home for the night, and not even spending it at her place, the chances were as slim as Mars colliding with Earth—unless...

"You didn’t have an accident, did you?"

Jiang Bei, sensing something was amiss, knew that even if Su Mu didn’t speak, she would find a way to learn the truth. Su Mu closed her eyes and recounted everything that had happened to her the day before to Jiang Bei, who rose from the sofa in shock:

"You and Wen Han... slept together?"

Su Mu shook her head:

"Just slept, nothing happened."

She knew her own body best.

Jiang Bei nodded, indicating her belief.

She anxiously paced in place, trying to process the information as quickly as possible. However, no matter how she reasoned, it seemed like a dead end for Su Mu. The other party would not do such a thing for no reason and definitely had a follow-up plan. The most challenging part now was that they had no idea what the other party’s motives were.

Watching Jiang Bei’s mannerisms, Su Mu said,

"I want to tell Fu Shinian about this."

"Have you lost your mind?" Jiang Bei stopped pacing and looked at Su Mu. "Do I need to tell you what kind of outcome to expect if Fu Shinian finds out? Even if nothing substantial happened between you and Wen Han, do you think he can bear knowing you and Wen Han spent a night together undressed in the same bed?"

"He has to know sooner or later."

"Maybe not. You said yourself you suspect it was Wen Shaoyuan’s grandmother’s doing. If so, she’s neither aware of your true identity nor has any motive. The only possibility is that you were just a tool for her to use to extort money from Wen Han."

The more Jiang Bei spoke, the more convinced she became:

"Yes, I’m sure that’s it. She doesn’t know many people in Shen City, and her only reason to be here is for the money. Seeing how close you and Shaoyuan are, she probably felt threatened, fearing she wouldn’t get any money after you married Wen Han. Taking advantage of her current freedom to move about in the Wen Family, she’s using these despicable tactics to reap the greatest benefit."

The more Jiang Bei thought about it, the angrier she became:

"I’m calling my brother right now, and I’ll have that old witch caught! I won’t let her off, not after she dares to mess with my people."

As Jiang Bei said this, she had already dialed Wen Han’s number. Su Mu didn’t even have time to stop her; Jiang Bei was already talking to him. After a fierce interrogation followed by silence, Wen Han apparently spoke something about Su Mu, prompting a change in Jiang Bei’s expression:

"Really?"

Wen Han answered softly, "Yes, she’s right in front of me now, demanding money. Tell Su Mu I will handle this. If it’s convenient, I will explain everything to her in person."

Jiang Bei stole a glance at Su Mu:

"We’ll see."

If she knew Su Mu well, she knew Su Mu might never want to see Wen Han again.

After hanging up, Su Mu’s gaze followed Jiang Bei:

"What happened?"

"It’s simple, just as I thought. Chen Huifang, that pest, is right now holding the negatives and blackmailing my brother for money."

"She took pictures?" Su Mu’s expression was one of panic.

Jiang Bei knew this was a sensitive issue for Su Mu, but she couldn’t hide it forever, and ultimately nodded:

"My brother is military after all, with that kind of family background. It wouldn’t be good for anyone if this got out. Chen Huifang is exploiting this very fact to threaten my brother, but we never thought it would involve you. Don’t worry, he will get the negatives back and make sure a fourth person never finds out."

Su Mu said nothing, sitting quietly as if lost in a void. Jiang Bei, not knowing how to comfort her, thought that for anyone facing such a situation, it would be hard not to be distressed or to avoid irrational thoughts. In Jiang Bei’s view, Su Mu was handling it reasonably well.

Jiang Bei sat down beside her. "My brother said he wants to explain things to you personally, to give you a proper explanation."

At this, Su Mu seemed slightly startled, then shook her head:

"No need, it’s not necessary."

Jiang Bei didn’t press her. "I’ll tell my brother you don’t want to be bothered."

Su Mu wasn’t feeling bothered; she just felt guilty towards Wen Shaoyuan, and... Fu Shinian.

Observing Su Mu’s silent form, Jiang Bei knew what she was thinking and grasped her hand:

"Susu, if you trust me, if you still want to continue your life with Fu Shinian, keep this to yourself and never tell Fu Shinian. He really won’t be able to accept it, and even if he does, there will always be a shadow in his heart he can’t move past. No man can be indifferent about such things. They can have a hundred women outside, but they absolutely can’t tolerate their own woman having any ambiguity with another man, especially considering you and my brother..."

Su Mu shook her head:

"I still feel I should tell him."

"Susu..."

"I don’t believe there’s such a thing as an airtight wall. There may not be many people who know, but I can’t count on sheer luck. I cannot live in constant fear, hoping he will never find out. If he does, and if he hears it not from me but from someone else’s embellished story, then our relationship is truly over."

Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu:

"Can you guarantee that Fu Shinian will believe you? He is away on a business trip right now and cannot see your true state. Where do you get the confidence that he will continue with you after knowing everything? He has only treated you well for a few days, and you believe everything? Even if we set that aside, can you assure that Fu Shinian has never kept anything from you?"

"I..."

Just as Su Mu was about to say something, the sudden ring of her phone interrupted her, causing her to freeze instantly. Jiang Bei, taking note of this, dug out the phone from her bag and handed it to Su Mu:

"You’re clearly not as brave as you claim, or else why would a ringtone scare you like this? Relax, it’s not Fu Shinian, it’s from the old residence."
