Chapter 179: Chapter 179 Wen Family, Wen Han

Fu Shinian heard the sound and looked up, his gaze towards Song Yi was so indifferent that it lacked any trace of emotion, yet it was this very look that made Song Yi too afraid to let out a breath, let alone utter a single word, for fear that Fu Shinian might throw him down from this towering skyscraper of over thirty stories after hearing what he had to say.

Time seemed to freeze, but it ultimately did not.

After several minutes of silence, Fu Shinian stood up from the sofa, walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and looked down at the bustling city, before lighting a cigarette. No one knew what he was thinking, but amidst the swirling smoke, Song Yi heard him speak,

"Who was it?"

"The surveillance footage from seven years ago is impossible to find, but the archives at the Traffic Police Brigade contained the written records from that time. The photocopied documents received showed that on that day, an Audi was travelling from south to north, and at the intersection on Fuhua Road, because it ran a red light, it struck a high school student, who is now the madam. Because it was pouring rain at the time, and close to midnight, the driver didn’t get out of the car. Instead, worried that the struck person would become a burden, they decided to hit to kill."

"Later, a jeep traveling from east to west came upon the scene, and it directly crashed into the Audi, saving the madam from that calamity." Song Yi looked up at Fu Shinian’s expression and continued, "The jeep driver took the madam to the hospital and hastily left due to other matters, only coming forward to the Traffic Police Brigade to explain the situation half a month later."

Fu Shinian remained silent, but his pace of smoking noticeably sped up. The cigarette had burned down to the butt, now clamped between his fingers and struggling to burn its last.

Song Yi felt like he was much like the cigarette butt in Fu Shinian’s hand, his life and death completely at his whim.

A few seconds later, the heat from the cigarette butt finally burned Fu Shinian, who snapped out of his reverie, turned around, and stubbed out the cigarette in the ashtray, beginning softly,

"Who’s the owner of the car?"

Although he didn’t specify, how could Song Yi not understand whom he was inquiring about? Cautiously, he replied,

"The jeep owner, the Wen Family... Wen Han."

Fu Shinian paused in his actions for a few seconds before resuming and looked at Song Yi, his eyebrow slightly raised, "Wen Han?"

"Yes, the vehicle was a military jeep, there’s no mistake."

Fu Shinian fell silent for a few seconds, then sat down on the sofa and said faintly, "Understood."

Song Yi wanted to say something else but couldn’t find the right words. After a minute of silence in the room, he quietly left.

It’s ironic that when Song Yi mentioned the other vehicle was a jeep, Fu Shinian instinctively thought of Wen Han. It wasn’t out of hostility, but because among the people he had seen around, only Wen Han drove a jeep. It was an unconscious thought, yet it turned out to be true.

The world is truly vast, so vast that some people may never meet in their lifetimes; yet, it is also incredibly small, so small that even if separated at the ends of the earth, they might inexplicably meet.

Su Mu did not know that the person who had saved her that year was Wen Han. What about Wen Han then? Did he know the little girl he had saved back then was Su Mu?

Fu Shinian took out his phone, wanting to call Su Mu, not to say anything in particular—just hearing her voice would be nice. But looking at the time, it was barely 7:30, and fearing she was still asleep, he put the phone away. Suddenly remembering something, he dialed Qiao Yu’s number.

At this time of day, Qiao Yu picked up quickly, which could only mean he had just finished his shift and was preparing to head home. Perhaps in a good mood, even his voice carried a hint of excitement,

"Aren’t you in Hong Kong? Why are you calling me?"

Fu Shinian didn’t beat around the bush and directly shared the problem he had encountered,

"The person who saved Su Mu has been found."

Qiao Yu was taken aback,

"Did you have someone look for him? Are you sick? Didn’t I tell you it’s also good to just let bygones be bygones? It’s been so long, not to mention Su Mu is now convinced it’s you, even if it wasn’t, after so much time has passed, even if the two people who were involved stood face to face now, they would probably not recognize each other, right?"

"That person, you know him too."

"I know him?" Qiao Yu suddenly had a bad premonition and boldly guessed, "It can’t be Wen Han, can it?"

Fu Shinian didn’t speak. Over the phone, Qiao Yu let out a ’damn’, cursing softly, "What a twisted fate!"

Indeed, what a twisted fate, to have encountered again after seven years, and to have become the tutor for his son.

"What do you plan to do? Don’t tell me you want to tell Su Mu."

Fu Shinian pinched the bridge of his nose wearily, "I don’t know."

"You don’t know?" Qiao Yu was almost laughing in frustration, "Fu Shinian, you say you’re so smart, so why can’t you get out of this mess? Think about it, how does sharing this benefit you or Su Mu? I won’t elaborate on your disadvantages, but if Su Mu finds out that all her feelings for the past few years were bestowed upon the wrong person, and she had suffered two years of needless bullying and torment because of it, if I were her, I’d be depressed to death. Even for her sake, you can’t tell her."

"If I don’t tell her, could it be possible that Su Mu will never know?"

"Of course, it can. It’s been so long, who would think to bring up the matter? Wen Han is a military man; over the years, he’s saved countless people. To him, Su Mu was just a minor episode. Can you be sure he still remembers that incident? Even if he does, are you sure he knows that the person he saved was Su Mu? Su Mu was a high school student seven years ago, right? She’s changed so much over the years. To take ten thousand steps back, even if he remembers, why would he bring it up out of the blue?"

Fu Shinian remained silent, and Qiao Yu didn’t know what else to say. Having known Fu Shinian for so long, this seemed to be the first time he had seen him so helpless. Qiao Yu knew he was afraid, fraught with anxiety, worried that if the supposed truth were laid bare before Su Mu, the hard-earned peace they now had would be shattered.

After all, Su Mu’s affection for him stemmed from seven years ago. And if that foundation were lost, perhaps Fu Shinian’s actions over the past two years wouldn’t be enough to give him the confidence to keep Su Mu with him.

He sighed softly,

"If only we had known what today would bring, why did we do what we did?"

Fu Shinian, uncharacteristically, did not retort but simply said softly, "Hanging up."

Around nine o’clock, before Fu Shinian left his hotel to go to a partnership company, he stood in front of the hotel’s floor-to-ceiling windows and called Su Mu. It rang for a long time before a sleepy voice came from the other end,

"Shinian..."

The man standing in front of the 36th-floor window of the Hong Kong hotel slightly curled his lips at the simple two words from the other end of the line.
