Chapter 177: Chapter 177: I Will Never Marry Again in This Lifetime

Su Mu didn’t want to face Chen Huifang either, as this was a matter completely unrelated to her, but she knew very well that Chen had been aggressively pressing her downstairs just a moment ago. Her skepticism and dissatisfaction with Su Mu had been quite obvious. If Su Mu didn’t go down to confront her, Chen might soon come running upstairs.

And she didn’t want Wen Shaoyuan to face this.

For a child to see a close relative become someone he despised was truly a cruel thing.

When Su Mu went downstairs, Chen Huifang was still eating. Auntie Li stood by, trembling and somewhat at a loss. She approached Su Mu as she came down:

"Miss Su, you’ve finished your lessons for today, right? Then I’ll have the driver take you home."

Auntie Li meant well, thinking that since all of Chen’s hostility was directed at Su Mu alone, things might calm down once she left. If Su Mu and Chen Huifang hadn’t met face to face before, Su Mu might have chosen to leave because Wen Han had said he didn’t want her to get involved.

But now that her presence was known to Chen Huifang, whether she stayed or left made no difference. Her leaving might even cause Chen to direct all her anger at the child, which was definitely not something Su Mu wanted to see.

She shook her head slightly:

"Shaoyuan will have lessons to do after he wakes up; I’ll wait here for him."

Auntie Li furrowed her brows but said nothing. She watched Su Mu walk step by step into the living room and calmly take a seat on the couch.

Chen Huifang ate while watching Su Mu, noticing her flipping through a book with an indifferent expression. Anger surged within her, and she put down her chopsticks and walked over to sit in front of Su Mu. When Su Mu sensed her gaze, she looked up from her book and smiled faintly.

Chen Huifang sneered:

"How old are you?"

"24."

"A teacher at 24? Which school did you graduate from? It couldn’t be that you became Wen Shaoyuan’s teacher just because of your looks?" Chen’s disdain and dissatisfaction were written all over her face, unmasked, "How long have you known Wen Han?"

Su Mu smiled faintly:

"As long as I have known Shaoyuan, so only a few months."

"Just a few months and you’ve managed to get so close to Shaoyuan, you must have put in some effort, right? Knowing to start with the child, getting Shaoyuan to like you so you could more easily marry into the family, is that it?"

Su Mu looked at her, her expression unchanged:

"I think you’ve misunderstood; I’m already married."

Chen Huifang was momentarily surprised: "Married?"

"Yes, I’ve been married for two years now."

"That’s not just some excuse you’re giving me, is it?"

"If you don’t believe me, you can ask Auntie Li or Wen Shaoyuan; they both know and have met my husband."

Auntie Li, who was clearing the dishes, chimed in:

"Yes, Miss Su is indeed married. Her husband, a well-known businessman, came with her to the young master’s birthday party not long ago. He is truly a man of distinction."

Chen Huifang was still skeptical but said nothing, just scrutinizing Su Mu unabashedly, with prejudice and judgment. Perhaps in her view, anyone Su Mu married must have been for his money, regardless of his social status or looks.

But Su Mu didn’t feel the need to explain anything to such a person because no matter what she said, they would hold onto their own views and not easily change.

The afternoon passed without incident, though Wen Shaoyuan was somewhat affected emotionally. However, Su Mu still helped him with some lessons for a while. Chen Huifang came upstairs a few times, stood at the door, watched them for a while without saying anything, and then left.

As the night grew later, Wen Shaoyuan’s mood became increasingly gloomy. Su Mu probably knew what he was thinking, smiled slightly, and raised his hand to touch his hair:

"If you’d like, you can leave with me later, and we’ll go see Grandma and stay at her place for a few days."

Wen Shaoyuan’s eyes lit up, and he looked at Su Mu excitedly:

"Really, can I?"

"Of course, Grandma has been missing you too."

"Okay."

Su Mu wouldn’t have felt at ease leaving Wen Shaoyuan with his grandmother, but in the end, her plan didn’t come to fruition. Not for any special reason, but because Wen Han returned. Hearing noise from downstairs, Wen Shaoyuan instantly looked up. He turned to Su Mu:

"It sounds like my dad just came back."

Su Mu looked at Wen Shaoyuan: "Did you call Dad?"

"Yes," Wen Shaoyuan nodded. "It’s Saturday, Dad was supposed to come back today anyway."

After saying that, he jumped off the chair, grabbed Su Mu’s hand, and headed downstairs.

As expected, standing in the living room downstairs in his military uniform was Wen Han, while Chen Huifang was lounging on the sofa, leisurely eating sunflower seeds and watching TV. Hearing the noise from upstairs, Wen Han looked up and upon seeing Su Mu and Wen Shaoyuan, he nodded slightly in acknowledgment:

"Thank you, Mr. Su, for taking care of Shaoyuan. I’ll be at home today, so you can head back earlier."

Su Mu knew what he meant and nodded subtly:

"Okay."

Su Mu turned and said a few words to Wen Shaoyuan, then patted his hair. Although Wen Shaoyuan seemed reluctant to part, Su Mu still walked away. At the entrance, Wen Han came over to see her out:

"I should have been the one to see you off, but I have matters at home and could only arrange for a driver."

"It’s fine, Shaoyuan is the most important. Go keep him company."

Wen Han looked intensely at Su Mu, then spoke:

"Su Mu, if she said something unpleasant to you before, I apologize."

Su Mu was silent for a few seconds:

"No, but I must say something that perhaps I shouldn’t. The issues between Grandma and Shaoyuan ultimately need to be addressed. It seems not quite right to keep dragging this on, especially for Shaoyuan. His mood hasn’t been great all day."

"I know."

Su Mu smiled, but did not find it appropriate to continue. After saying goodbye to Wen Han, she left. After sending Su Mu off, Wen Han returned to the living room. Chen Huifang was still in the same position, her gaze towards Wen Han was both scornful and cold. Wen Han suppressed his anger and looked towards Wen Shaoyuan, who was standing at the foot of the stairs:

"You go back to your room first."

Wen Shaoyuan understood and nodded, then turned and walked away. Auntie Li tactfully left the living room too. Wen Han walked over and sat down next to Chen Huifang on the sofa, casually turning off the TV:

"What are you planning this time?"

Chen Huifang sat up straight, looked at Wen Han, and scoffed:

"What am I planning? If I hadn’t returned unexpectedly this time, I wouldn’t have known you were secretly finding a stepmother for Wen Shaoyuan. Wen Han, you promised me you’d never remarry in this lifetime and would take good care of Wen Shaoyuan. You made that promise to Zhuo Qing before she died too, that you’d provide for me for life. So what’s this about? Seeing a pretty woman and thinking about breaking the promise?"
