Chapter 172: Chapter 172 I believe in you
Fu Shinian’s gaze never left Su Mu, and at that moment, as he watched her neck appear elongated due to her movement—her skin so pale he could see the tiny blood vessels beneath—he knew he should restrain himself, yet he couldn’t help but lower his head to press a kiss there.
Su Mu shivered slightly, but thankfully, Fu Shinian did nothing else excessive beyond that kiss. He didn’t get up either, simply burying his face in her neck, his hot breath spraying on Su Mu’s sensitive skin, causing her immense tension.
She felt as though Fu Shinian was very much like a vampire at that moment, ready to bite open her carotid artery at any time.
Time must have passed for quite a while, Su Mu’s legs were beginning to feel numb from his weight, and she finally regained her senses from the surprise Fu Shinian had brought upon her. She struggled a bit, signaling him to get up, and Fu Shinian did prop himself up slightly, yet still confined her from moving.
"Get up, I’m not comfortable like this."
"We’ll talk, and then I’ll let you get up."
Su Mu glared at him, "I can also talk sitting up."
"I prefer it this way."
Su Mu: "..."
Of course, Su Mu didn’t want to just give in to his whim. However, given the vast difference in strength between men and women, without his active withdrawal, she wouldn’t be able to leave on her own. In the end, she had no choice but to grit her teeth and speak:
"Speak then."
"I have only two words for you, ’come back.’"
Having said that, he did as he promised and got up from Su Mu, reseating himself to his original position. Su Mu followed and got up after a few seconds of silence.
It was just a simple pair of words, but Su Mu understood the weight behind them, and what those words meant.
Choosing to go back would mean having to let go of all past grievances and swallow her pride as if nothing happened, just like before. On the other hand, leaving might not be that simple because he just said he had no intention of divorcing. Yet, if she did succeed, she would have to accept that Fu Shinian would become a passerby in her life.
Completely erasing Fu Shinian from her life.
Could she truly accept such an outcome? Su Mu asked herself in her heart.
Fu Shinian saw Su Mu’s hesitation and conflict. He didn’t pressure her, only said indifferently:
"You said that marrying me, who didn’t love you, was based on the belief that as long as you were wholehearted, there would be a reward. I didn’t believe in your affection for me before, so I ignored everything about you. But now I believe it, I believe you love me, since seven years ago."
Su Mu looked up at him, suddenly feeling that everything happening before her eyes was as absurd as a farce. The thing she had longed for many years was being realized so abruptly, yet ironically, she didn’t feel the excitement she thought she would.
"Want to try again?" Fu Shinian looked at her, "Or give up now?"
Su Mu was quiet. She didn’t speak for a long time, and Fu Shinian quietly waited by her side, then finally, he stood up:
"Think about it."
As he was leaving, Su Mu spoke up, her voice very soft, but Fu Shinian still heard her. She said:
"What if I give up? Will you agree then?"
Su Shinian’s footsteps were halted by her words. He didn’t turn around, looking straight ahead, and after a few seconds, he responded, "I won’t."
"Why not?"
"Su Mu," he left her with a lean, tall figure, "Some things, once started, cannot be easily stopped. You can leave, but I’ll definitely bring you back."
At dinner, the old lady clearly sensed something off with Fu Shinian’s mood and asked a few questions. He deftly deflected, quickly turning the topic to say that he would stay at the old house before the new year. The old lady was happy upon hearing this, but then, thinking of something, her mood turned somber:
"You don’t have to move back just for me. What fun would there be in living with an old lady like me? Better go back with Susu, you’ll be more comfortable."
Fu Shinian smiled faintly:
"Does the old lady think we’re too noisy?"
"How can you say that? I would be delighted if you were by my side chattering every day, but young people should have their own lives." The old lady glanced at Su Mu and probed, "Didn’t we agree? You don’t need to come back to keep me company. As long as you have a child and leave it with me, that will be enough."
Stopped in her tracks by the old lady’s words, Su Mu knew everyone’s eyes were surely on her, but she found herself unable to respond.
Su Shiyue looked at Su Mu and smiled slightly:
"From the look of sister-in-law, she doesn’t want to have a child?"
Su Mu looked up at her, about to say something, but Fu Shinian spoke leisurely: "Old lady, a child is definitely in the plan, but now is not the right time. Recently, I took Su Mu to see a traditional Chinese medicine doctor who said her constitution is too weak; she needs more conditioning, otherwise, pregnancy will be very difficult."
Hearing this, the old lady turned her concerned gaze upon Su Mu, asking repeatedly. Su Mu had no choice but to go along with Fu Shinian’s lie, but fortunately, the old lady did not suspect anything.
Su Shiyue found the conversation dull and focused on her meal, but to her surprise, Fu Shinian’s next topic landed on her:
"Now that grandma is feeling better, are you going back to England?"
Su Shiyue glanced at him:
"You don’t need to rush me; my flight is tomorrow."
"If you dare sneak back again, I’ll cut off your allowance."
"You..."
The old lady interjected: "Yueyue, your brother is doing this for your own good. There’s nothing special about my birthday to come back especially for, studying is more important."
In the evening, Su Mu kept the old lady company for a while before returning to the bedroom. Fu Shinian was still working in his study. Sitting on the edge of the bed, Su Mu called Jiang Bei.
Jiang Bei, not on duty, was soaking in the tub with a glass of red wine. Seeing Su Mu’s call, she casually picked up:
"Whenever you call me at this time, I can’t help but worry about you."
Su Mu smiled faintly: "I’m fine."
"Glad to hear it. How’s the old lady? I heard from Qiao Yu that everything is going well."
"Yes, that incident hasn’t happened again lately."
"Maybe it was really just a coincidence. Don’t worry too much. You haven’t fully recovered yet either, so take care of yourself too."
Su Mu didn’t speak for a few seconds, but Jiang Bei understood what her silence meant and let out a faint sigh:
"You’re going to forgive him, aren’t you?"
Perhaps that’s how it is between true friends—you don’t have to say a word for her to know what you’re trying to express.
Su Mu tacitly confirmed Jiang Bei’s words:
"He apologized to me today. You know how difficult that is for him."
"Apologizing is a virtue everyone should possess. You can’t think he’s close to being top of the class just because he usually scores zero and suddenly got a five, can you?"
"I used to like him, and he didn’t believe it, but now he does." Su Mu gazed out of the window at the night: "Xiaobei, you know I like him. Marrying him was just seeking a good outcome. I have tried hard for this for two years, and maybe with a little more effort, I can get what I want. I don’t want to give up."
