Chapter 148: Chapter 148: Him and I, Impossible
When their eyes finally calmed down, both were terribly swollen. You looked at me, and I looked back at you, then broke into laughter. Jiang Bei gently patted Su Mu’s face:
"You have to know, I really, really wanted you to get divorced. He’s not worthy of you, let alone your affection. But I support you, every decision you make, even if it leads to disaster, don’t be afraid. I’m here with you."
At these words, Su Mu inexplicably started crying again:
"I know, I’ve always known."
"But I still have to take it out on Fu Shinian. Don’t feel sorry for him; even if it’s not now, I must give him a good beating, or my name isn’t Jiang."
Su Mu nodded:
"Okay, if I can, I’ll help you."
Lying in bed after washing up, Su Mu wasn’t sleepy at all. These days, aside from resting, she still found herself sleeping less at night. The glass window, which hadn’t been covered by the curtains, looked somewhat sinister at night, and Su Mu stared straight at it as if a monster might suddenly burst through.
Jiang Bei wasn’t asleep either. Perhaps it was because the emotional release earlier had been too intense. Even though his eyes were closed, his mind was a mess. He couldn’t help but think of Ji Nanfeng and then asked Su Mu:
"Are you asleep?"
"No."
Jiang Bei opened his eyes and turned to look at Su Mu:
"Do you know Ji Nanfeng?"
Su Mu: "..."
She hadn’t even heard of him, let alone seen him.
"And then?"
"Nothing much afterward, just that I wondered what kind of friends Fu Shinian has? None with a bit of moral baseline."
Although Fu Shinian was close to them, he had never picked up such bad habits.
"When he left the hospital, he even asked for my phone number."
At this, Su Mu suddenly became nervous, sat up in bed, and looked at Jiang Bei: "Is he interested in you?"
Jiang Bei let out a light chuckle and patted her hand:
"Do you think I’m blind? Even if I were, I wouldn’t be interested in someone like him. Let him find someone else early on. I couldn’t accept it."
Jiang Bei’s response reminded Su Mu of someone. She chuckled:
"What do you think about Qiao Yu?"
Jiang Bei caught the other meaning in Su Mu’s words and teased her: "Have you been too idle lately? Even trying to snatch the matchmaker’s job? But let me advise you to drop the matter; Qiao Yu and I are archenemies. We want to argue as soon as we see each other, can’t even keep the anger down."
"If it weren’t for my situation with Fu Shinian, you might not feel the same way about Qiao Yu."
"Maybe, but that also just proves there’s no destiny between us." Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu helplessly: "I’m seriously telling you to stop thinking about such nonsense. It’s absolutely impossible between him and me unless you want to see an even bigger feud in the future."
Su Mu just smiled and said nothing more. She had never been a fan of playing matchmaker, believing in fate’s hand. If two people were meant to be together, they would find each other without anyone needing to intervene. She mentioned it to Jiang Bei simply because it seemed fitting.
Getting back into bed, after a few seconds of silence, Su Mu slowly spoke:
"Xiaobei, I want to start a studio."
Jiang Bei immediately became interested: "That’s great, isn’t that always your dream? When do you plan to do it? I can help."
"Not so fast, choosing a location, decorating, it all takes time." Su Mu smiled faintly: "You’re right, I can stay here for a while, but not a lifetime. I have to step out eventually."
----
Qin Nianwan invited Fu Shinian out to eat, and he didn’t refuse. After all, it had been a while since they’d appeared in public together, and it was about time to give the media something to write about, lest people think they’d broken up.
The restaurant was a Western one, with mid-to-high-end pricing and lots of customers. It wasn’t very secluded, and though they were in a private room, it had an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. Fu Shinian didn’t ask anyone to draw the curtains. He and Qin Nianwan sat opposite each other, a table with roses in between them. To everyone else, they seemed like an ordinary couple on a date.
Today, Qin Nianwan appeared to Fu Shinian to be the same as when she was in the film city; last time, it was about borrowing money. This time... with a slight smile, Fu Shinian looked at Qin Nianwan:
"Do you need something, inviting me out today?"
Qin Nianwan returned the smile:
"Can’t I just come out to eat without something pressing? It’s been a long time since we last met."
The last time they met was at Wen Shaoyuan’s birthday, which wasn’t that long ago, but Fu Shinian was not one to quibble over such details, and smiled mildly:
"Of course."
Fu Shinian ate his meal unhurriedly while Qin Nianwan also picked up her cutlery, but she seemed to have little appetite and set them down after a few seconds. Fu Shinian noticed and glanced at her:
"What’s wrong? Not to your liking?"
Qin Nianwan shook her head: "No, it’s just that I’ve been staying at home a lot lately, not doing much exercise, so eating less helps avoid gaining weight."
Having previously been approached by Chen Jie, it wasn’t hard for Fu Shinian to read between the lines of Qin Nianwan’s words. But until she made her point clear, he naturally wouldn’t tear through the pretense:
"You’ve been working so hard on that TV series for such a long time, and now Chen Jie hasn’t scheduled any work for you, take the chance to rest properly."
Qin Nianwan looked at Fu Shinian, silent for a moment before she eventually decided to speak the truth:
"Shinian, I don’t want to stop working."
Fu Shinian watched her and kept quiet, as if waiting for her to finish her statement.
"Chen Jie has talked to me about the career path she has planned, and I know it’s a great blueprint, but it’s not very practical for me."
Fu Shinian stopped eating, gracefully wiped his lips, and leaned back in his chair before asking Qin Nianwan:
"How so?"
"I’m actually quite short of money. I owe you so much, and as you know, I don’t like being in debt to anyone. I want to work and pay you back as soon as possible, but Chen Jie disagrees with me taking on some endorsements. I understand she means well, aiming for a high-end route, but at this rate, I really don’t know when I’ll be able to pay you back in full."
