Chapter 132: Chapter 132 Lure the Tiger Away from the Mountain
Although the two of them weren’t in the same department, Jiang Bei’s temper was well known throughout the hospital. Qiao Yu knew he couldn’t escape, and if he didn’t completely resolve his private feud with Jiang Bei, he could guarantee that he’d become famous throughout the hospital within a day.
Of course, his medical skills had always been famous.
But he had absolutely no desire for the fame of being chased by Jiang Bei to pay back a debt.
After much deliberation, he decided to make an exchange with her. So, he waited for her by the elevator and, when he saw Jiang Bei approaching slowly in her white canvas shoes, Qiao Yu immediately put on what he considered to be a very pleasant smile. Unfortunately, to Jiang Bei, it seemed to take on an entirely different flavor:
"Don’t think that by putting on a face that looks like you’re constipated you can amuse me, and I will forgive you."
Qiao Yu: "..."
When Jiang Bei stood beside him, Qiao Yu took a furtive glance at her. He hesitated over the words in his heart again and again, but in the end, he decided to speak up. What he didn’t expect was that before he could say anything, Jiang Bei had a question for him, which also involved Su Mu:
"Have you seen Fu Shinian recently?"
Hearing the displeasure in Jiang Bei’s voice, Qiao Yu cautiously replied:
"Should I have seen him?"
"Why are you so nervous? Do you think I’ll eat you?" Jiang Bei glanced at him with disdain: "I just heard from Xiao Yuan yesterday that Su Mu hasn’t gone to teach him for three days, and I couldn’t get through to her on the phone either. I was thinking of going to her house after work today to check on her. I just don’t want to see that Fu Shinian, I really dislike him."
Qiao Yu pursed his lips and carefully ventured:
"If I tell you a secret, can we call off our earlier matter?"
Jiang Bei’s vigilance was high, and she instantly sensed something off about Qiao Yu’s words. She turned her head to look at him, her gaze skeptical and scrutinizing. With a slight raise of her eyebrows, she pointedly identified the crux of the issue:
"It’s related to Su Mu?"
Qiao Yu couldn’t help but admire Jiang Bei inwardly, and at the same time, felt sympathy for her future boyfriend. If one day he ended up with her, even a minor irregularity outside would likely be known in clear detail by Jiang Bei, as if she had seen it with her own eyes. But that wasn’t his problem to worry about; his main concern now was the matter at hand.
He nodded slightly:
"Sort of."
"Deal," Jiang Bei agreed swiftly and decisively: "Tell me, what happened to Su Mu?"
Qiao Yu smiled faintly:
"Aren’t you afraid I’m deceiving you?"
Jiang Bei chuckled softly: "If you dare, I would really admire you."
Qiao Yu: "..."
"Just a friendly reminder, I don’t have extra patience to waste time with you here." Jiang Bei looked at him: "In any case, if you don’t tell me, I will go to Bishui Yuntian to find Su Mu after work."
The elevator arrived, and just as Jiang Bei was about to step in, she was pulled back by Qiao Yu. He knew his limits and released her arm promptly before she could get annoyed, pointing toward the nearby emergency stairs: "Shall we take the stairs up?"
Seeing that he didn’t appear to be joking, Jiang Bei indulged him and started walking towards the stairs.
In fact, Qiao Yu didn’t really want to make a deal with Jiang Bei but rather, the idea of informing Jiang Bei was something he had been considering from the start. Su Mu’s only real friend was Jiang Bei, and Jiang Bei truly considered things from Su Mu’s perspective. Qiao Yu’s actions were simply a means to help Su Mu, hoping that she would recover as soon as possible.
In the stairwell, Qiao Yu’s expression appeared hesitant. Jiang Bei glanced at his profile several times and felt that he wasn’t pretending; she couldn’t help but ask out loud:
"What’s that look on your face? If you keep this up, I’ll start thinking Su Mu is dead. Can you please speak up?"
Qiao Yu looked at Jiang Bei, "Can you promise me to stay calm after you hear what I have to say?"
"Depends on what it is."
Qiao Yu knew that any assurance he sought from Jiang Bei was ineffective in her eyes, and he didn’t believe that even if Jiang Bei promised, she would actually keep her composure—after all, even he couldn’t calm himself down.
"I came here from Bishui Yuntian, I was there all of last night too."
Jiang Bei’s movements started to slow down, and by the time Qiao Yu finished his last word, she had completely stopped, as if she couldn’t believe what she was hearing or rather, she simply didn’t want to think in that direction. After all, no one knew better than her what it meant for a doctor to spend a night at Bishui Yuntian.
"What exactly happened to Su Mu?"
With the conversation coming to this point, some things had to be said whether he wanted to or not. He sighed softly, sat down on the stairs, and proceeded to tell her everything that had occurred between Su Mu and Fu Shinian in the past few days. Of course, he skirted around the severity of the situation, but to Jiang Bei, it seemed to make no difference.
She listened quietly, processed Qiao Yu’s words in her mind for a few seconds, and then made a move. Her first action was to take out her phone and call the department head, clearly requesting leave before turning to walk down the stairs. Qiao Yu stood up to stop her:
"What are you planning to do?"
Jiang Bei wasn’t angry or hurried, but her reaction seemed more dangerous than ever to Qiao Yu. She just faintly curled the corners of her lips and said softly:
"I’m going to kill that bastard Fu Shinian. Are you coming with me?"
Qiao Yu: "...Shinian is at home with Su Mu right now, so it’s no use going there. Moreover, Su Mu is in a coma, and I reckon she’ll be asleep until evening. You won’t be able to talk to her even if you go now. It’s better to wait until Su Mu wakes up and then..."
"I can’t wait," Jiang Bei interrupted Qiao Yu: "I can’t even wait a moment. You don’t understand Su Mu. If she has resorted to fasting like this, it means she’s at the brink of collapse and helplessness. I can’t just do nothing when I know exactly what’s happening to her."
She turned to go down another two steps then paused and looked back at Qiao Yu:
"Telling me all this means you care about Su Mu at least a little, right?"
Qiao Yu nodded:
"Of course."
"Good, we can consider our matter settled. I have a favor to ask of you now, and I hope you will help me. Consider it a favor owed.
Qiao Yu had a feeling it wouldn’t be anything good:
"You’re not planning to have me lure Fu Shinian away from Su Mu, are you?"
"Even if you don’t do that, I can still find a way to get Su Mu out of Bishui Yuntian. It’s just that it would be a bit awkward for both of us."
"What are you thinking of doing?"
Jiang Bei smiled faintly: "Fu Shinian cares about nobody except for his grandmother who lives in the old house, doesn’t he? If the old lady learns that her grandson, of whom she is so proud, has committed such an act of abusing his wife, I wonder what she would think?"
