Auntie Lin kept knocking on the door from outside, reminding Fu Shinian not to be impulsive, but he seemed not to hear, just staring at Su Mu.

Su Mu had waited a long time for his move. Slowly, she opened her eyes, her gaze like her entire being, still and without a trace of emotion as if she were looking at a stranger. After pausing for a moment, she finally found her voice, which was harsher than before, and said,

"Hurry over!" Fu Shinian couldn’t help but shout out, "It seems like Su Mu has stopped breathing."

Qiao Yu was startled too. Fu Shinian heard a rustle on the other end and then the call was disconnected. He quickly got dressed, went to check Su Mu’s breathing—which was there, but fainter than a thread of silk—roughly pulled up the blanket to cover Su Mu, and then opened the door. Auntie Lin was still waiting at the door, thinking whether she should call the old lady, but luckily Fu Shinian was now out.

Seeing Fu Shinian come out and hurriedly wanting to go inside, he stopped her:

"Go and get some glucose, with a straw."

"Yes, I’ll go right away."

The panic in Fu Shinian’s voice was something Auntie Lin had never heard before; she didn’t dare delay any longer and went straight downstairs. Fu Shinian returned to the bedside, almost helplessly, and stared at Su Mu, who showed no signs of life. It was not until this moment that he realized how excessive and fearful he had been.

When Qiao Yu arrived, Fu Shinian had already fed Su Mu some glucose, but her condition had not improved. Qiao Yu came forward to examine Su Mu’s eyelids, then took her temperature, and without another word, gave her an injection. By the time he had finished, Qiao Yu was sweating profusely, but he didn’t care about himself; he walked up to Fu Shinian and glared at him coldly:

"She’s like this, and you still had the heart to lay a finger on her?!"

Qiao Yu didn’t want to know what had happened between the couple just now, but he couldn’t ignore the obvious red marks on Su Mu’s body. He didn’t understand why Fu Shinian would completely lose his reason and turn into a different person whenever something involved Su Mu.

Fu Shinian looked at Qiao Yu, silent.

"Do you have any idea that what you did could have killed her? Even if she’s not your wife, she’s still a human life. What were you thinking? In all the years I’ve known you, I never knew you had such a cruel side." Qiao Yu was furious, "Have you completely lost your conscience? Even if Su Mu doesn’t like you, have you totally forgotten how good she has been to grandma? For the filial piety she’s shown to grandma, you shouldn’t treat her this way!"

Fu Shinian tried to say something but was stopped by Qiao Yu raising his hand:

"Don’t talk to me about this, I don’t want to hear anything from you right now."

Fu Shinian didn’t say more, knowing in his regained sobriety that Qiao Yu hadn’t said a single thing that wasn’t true. He was not someone who couldn’t accept criticism. As for these sincere and solid words, he had always taken them in. But if asked for a reason, he feared he couldn’t provide one; people really can do irrational things in anger.

And he, admitting his mistakes, would nonetheless not make excuses for himself.

Qiao Yu might have felt a bit more relieved after venting, less stifled, and looking at Fu Shinian standing to the side in silence, he felt an inexplicable anger:

"Things have come to this, don’t you have anything to say?"

Fu Shinian glanced at him lightly:

"Didn’t you tell me not to speak?"

Su Mu was on an IV drip and would not wake up for a while, especially since she had barely slept for nearly three days. This sleep would be a long one.

After leaving Auntie Lin to look after Su Mu, Fu Shinian and Qiao Yu left the master bedroom:

"Don’t go back today. I’ll have someone prepare a guest room for you."

"No need to bother. I can’t leave with Su Mu like this. I’ve got an early shift tomorrow morning. I’ll go wash my face, and stay with Su Mu later, in case anything happens unexpectedly."

Fu Shinian frowned slightly:

"Is it that serious?"

"Now you’re concerned?" Qiao Yu glared at him with a sneer, "Where were you just now? What were you thinking when you went against Su Mu’s wishes and laid hands on her? Do you need me to tell you her condition? Can’t you see it? She was hanging on by a thread. I asked you to come back to talk some sense into her, to eat something, not to be so stubborn and hurt herself more, but instead, you made her pass out. I’m ashamed to say you’re my friend."

Fu Shinian admitted his fault:

"I was wrong in this matter."

"Of course, you were wrong." After saying that, Qiao Yu headed toward the bathroom, but after taking a couple of steps, he seemed to remember something and turned back to Fu Shinian: "The situation has escalated to this point, no woman would forgive you easily. You have time to say such nonsense to me, you might as well think about how to explain it when Su Mu wakes up."

Fu Shinian watched Qiao Yu, his expression indifferent:

"Didn’t she say she liked me?"

Qiao Yu frowned:

"Regardless of whether you believe Su Mu likes you, even genuine affection can’t withstand such mistreatment. There are limits to everything. Do you think you’re a beloved banknote that everyone can’t get enough of?"
