Chapter 13: Chapter 13 Be My Woman
In the moving car, Qin Nianwan did not speak. She kept looking out the window, observing the city she had left two years ago, while Fu Shinian looked at her profile. The carriage remained very quiet.
The unease was palpable for Song Yi in the passenger seat. He couldn’t understand why Mr. Fu had insisted on bringing him along to pick up his ex-girlfriend when there were clearly matters at the office waiting for him. Now, he could only sit there, too intimidated to even breathe too loudly.
He discreetly signaled the driver to speed up, but either his gestures were too subtle, or the driver was too focused because he seemed completely oblivious to Song Yi’s hints.
"What are you squinting and gesturing about?"
Song Yi had not expected that Fu Shinian, who had been watching Qin Nianwan, would notice his behavior. He could only offer an awkward smile in response:
"My, my eyes are a bit uncomfortable."
Qin Nianwan chuckled lightly and turned to look at Fu Shinian:
"It’s been two years, and your temper still hasn’t changed."
"And you?" Fu Shinian looked at her. "Have you changed?"
"I guess so." Qin Nianwan seemed contemplative. "After all, the environments I’ve been living in are quite different from before, and I’ve grown older. There’s bound to be some changes."
Fu Shinian sized her up from head to toe:
"But you look exactly as you did two years ago. Are you wearing this on purpose to make me remember the past?"
The smile on Qin Nianwan’s face faded slightly:
"It’s only been two years, have your memories of the past become so vague that you need my attire to jog them?"
Fu Shinian did not respond, and Qin Nianwan’s smile gradually disappeared:
"Actually, you didn’t need to come and pick me up. It seems there’s no longer any need for us to stay connected."
"But you still sent me a message, letting me know your return date. Didn’t you want me to come pick you up?"
Qin Nianwan was silent for a few seconds, focusing her gaze on the man in front of her. When she finally spoke, her voice was softer, laden with helplessness:
"Ah Nian, are you blaming me? Blaming me for leaving without saying goodbye, leaving you behind..."
Fu Shinian remained unresponsive, but to Qin Nianwan, his silence undoubtedly seemed like an affirmation. She had been worried whether Fu Shinian still had any feelings for her. Now it seemed, she was overthinking; if after two years he could still harbor resentment about her departure, it was clear he truly cared about her.
As the car entered the downtown area, Fu Shinian asked:
"Do you have a place to stay, or should I arrange one?"
"No need, I’ve already booked a hotel." As she mentioned the address, Song Yi instinctively looked towards Fu Shinian. If he hadn’t heard wrong, the hotel where Qin Nianwan was staying was the very one Su Mu worked at.
Realizing Song Yi’s reaction, Qin Nianwan spoke up:
"Is there a problem?"
Fu Shinian glared at Song Yi: "It seems it’s not just your eyes that are uncomfortable, but your nerves as well."
Song Yi could only offer an apologetic smile:
"Yes, I will go to the hospital when I have time."
While his visit to the hospital was a minor issue, Qin Nianwan’s choice of residence was a significant problem at the moment. Seeing the untroubled expression on Fu Shinian’s face, he started to doubt whether Fu Shinian really cared, especially since he didn’t even blink an eye upon hearing the name of the hotel where Qin Nianwan would stay.
Forget it, it’s not his ex-girlfriend or wife. Why should he care!
As they drew closer to Junyue Hotel, the normally silent Fu Shinian finally spoke up:
"The Fu Corporation has its own hotels; there’s no reason for you to stay elsewhere upon your return. Song Yi, arrange it."
"Yes."
Su Mu had spent the morning at home, intending to catch up on sleep, but couldn’t fall asleep no matter how much she tossed and turned. Every time she closed her eyes, thoughts of Fu Shinian and Qin Nianwan invaded her mind. To change her mood and stop herself from overthinking, she went to the office after lunch.
When her coworkers learned of her return, Li Cong and others briefly stepped away from their workstations to check on her. After some small talk, everyone returned to their tasks, and Su Mu finally settled at her desk, pressed the intercom to call her assistant in; she needed to know what had happened in the guest services department during her absence.
As she listened to her assistant’s report and turned on her computer, she initially intended to check the hotel’s booking status on the internal network but got distracted by a popup news alert. So much so, she couldn’t hear her assistant anymore — her mind fixated on the headline:
Chairman of Fu Corporation spotted with mysterious girlfriend, couple seen wearing matching outfits and showing affection at the airport.
The photo was crystal clear, and to the uninformed, it could easily be mistaken for a fashion shoot from a photography company. They stood face to face at the bustling airport terminal exit, smiling at one another with identical curves to their lips.
There were also photos of them leaving in the car together, checking into a Fu Corporation-owned hotel, and having lunch together, all exposed by the media.
Although Fu Shinian was the most valuable and influential person in Shen City, he did not like his private life to be the talk of the town after meals. Therefore, many media did not dare to blatantly report on Fu Shinian. However, now more than one media outlet was making a big deal out of it, which made Su Mu think there was no other possibility than that it was Fu Shinian’s own doing.
What were they doing now? Was Fu Shinian still with her?
Su Mu had come to the company to keep her mind off these thoughts, but now the whole of Shen City was filled with their news, making it unavoidable.
"Sister Mu, Sister Mu..." Her assistant called her softly a few times, pulling her back from her deep thoughts, and she apologized with a wry smile:
"I’m sorry, I was a bit distracted just now."
The assistant couldn’t help but worry:
"Sister Mu, are you still feeling unwell? Maybe you should go back and rest."
Su Mu shook her head:
"I’m fine. You go ahead, just send me the work log for this period to my email."
"Okay."
When the assistant opened the door to leave, she ran into Wei Shaoqin. She opened her mouth to greet him but was stopped by Wei Shaoqin, who gestured for her not to close the door.
Su Mu closed the computer screen, leaned back in her chair, and massaged her temple wearily. The chime of a text message on her phone momentarily jolted her awake, but she still stared at her phone in shock when she checked it; her bank had sent a message informing her that 10 million yuan had been deposited into her account a minute ago, leaving a total balance of 58 million yuan.
Realizing what had happened, Su Mu curled her lips into a smile. It seemed that last night’s service had pleased him greatly, and that was why he was so generous today. Perhaps she should keep up the effort, and she might not need many days to accrue hundreds of millions in assets.
Su Mu’s phone was busy today. Before she had even exited the messaging app, it rang again—it was a call from the nursing home. Su Mu’s heart skipped a beat, thinking it might be something about her mother, and she answered immediately:
"Hello, Miss Su, this is the front desk at Le Kang Nursing Home."
"Is it my mother? What’s her condition now?"
"Miss Su, you misunderstand. Your mother is in very good condition. My purpose for calling is to remind you that the prepaid fees at the nursing home have been depleted, and we would appreciate it if you could find time to come in and make a payment."
Su Mu’s heart sank back into place and she replied:
"Okay, I understand. Thank you for reminding me. I’ll make the payment by tomorrow at the latest."
After hanging up, Su Mu had no energy to wonder about what would happen between Fu Shinian and Qin Nianwan. She immediately logged into her mobile banking app and her forehead furrowed upon seeing the balance displayed on the screen. The fee for the nursing home was due quarterly and cost 60,000 yuan, but her account only had 3,007 yuan.
For two years, the money given to her by the Fu family had never been touched, let alone spent. It was as if only by doing so could she maintain her poor self-respect.
"Short on cash?" The sudden voice startled Su Mu, causing her to spring up from her seat and retreat several steps, almost falling over. Eventually, it was the culprit, Wei Shaoqin, who caught her by the waist and prevented her from another heroic injury.
Su Mu looked at him as if he was carrying some contagion and struggled to break free from his embrace, her face filled with irrepressible annoyance:
"Junior President Wei, this is my office; wouldn’t it be proper to knock before you enter?"
Wei Shaoqin glanced sideways at her and pulled over her office chair to sit down grandiosely, crossing his legs arrogantly. His whole demeanor exuded recklessness as he said:
"Manager Su, do I need to remind you that the entire hotel belongs to me? It is entirely reasonable for the young master to appear anywhere in this hotel; whether or not I knock does not depend on you in the room, but on the young master’s mood."
Su Mu couldn’t help rolling her eyes internally. These rich heirs probably all had their eyes on the tops of their heads, but she couldn’t be bothered to lecture him on manners and decency, as that would be utterly pointless:
"Did Junior President Wei come to see me for a specific reason?"
"I heard you came to work, so I came to see how you were doing, and incidentally, I happened to witness something embarrassing for you," Wei Shaoqin said confidently, looking at her as if he knew something she didn’t. "If you’re having trouble, you can just tell me outright. I definitely won’t stand by and watch you suffer."
Su Mu placed her phone back on the desk and said calmly:
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes!" Su Mu obviously had lost her patience. "If Junior President Wei doesn’t have anything else, please leave; I need to get back to work."
Wei Shaoqin didn’t move or speak; he just sat there, seemingly deep in thought, looking at Su Mu as if trying to discern any trace of pretense on her face. However, he saw none; all he saw were endurance and annoyance.
It wasn’t the first time Wei Shaoqin had encountered a woman like Su Mu, and the end was always the same. No matter how just and resolute their rejections at first, they eventually bowed under the offers he made. Whether they were willing or not, they ended up becoming his women, finding pleasure under him. As for whether they truly liked it, who cared? Wei Shaoqin didn’t see why their genuine feelings were so precious.
Genuine feelings, in a materialistic society, were the cheapest thing.
He believed Su Mu was no different, especially since she needed money.
"5 million!" Wei Shaoqin spoke up, "Be my woman!"
