Chapter 121: Chapter 121: I Will Not Like Anyone Anymore
Su Mu looked at him, wanting to ask, "What are you doubting?" but before the words could leave her mouth, Fu Shinian had unbuckled his seatbelt, got out of the car, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door, commanding, "Get out."
Although the area could be considered desolate, Su Mu didn’t refuse. She unbuckled her seatbelt, got out of the car, and a cold wind made her shiver. She stood by the roadside, watching Fu Shinian slam the car door angrily, then return to the driver’s seat and speed away. Soon, she couldn’t see any trace of him.
This wasn’t the first time she had been left on the roadside. Luckily, unlike the previous time, she had her phone and wallet with her. She could order a ride or hail a taxi, but she didn’t want to. She just wanted to be alone for a while to calm down.
She walked a long way, so long that although her cheeks and ears were cold, her body had gradually warmed up.
Her thoughts on not wanting children for the time being were simple. On one hand, she feared pregnancy; on the other, she truly wanted to establish her own photography studio. She didn’t want pregnancy to delay her plans. Moreover, if she and Fu Shinian continued this vicious cycle, it wouldn’t be good for the child either.
She could live her life in confusion but couldn’t let her child have the same life as hers.
Su Mu had thought about temporarily hiding her thoughts from Fu Shinian, secretly taking birth control pills, or asking Jiang Bei to get her an IUD. But after much consideration, she decided to speak frankly because she wasn’t good at lying, wasn’t completely sure she could prevent Fu Shinian from finding out, and wanted to be genuinely in charge of her life for once.
Perhaps it wasn’t a good time, but if Su Mu didn’t speak now, she feared she wouldn’t have the courage to do so later.
When a car suddenly stopped beside her, Su Mu also stopped. The window of the Jeep slowly rolled down, and Wen Han’s face appeared in Su Mu’s line of sight, his eyes full of concern:
"Where are you going? I’ll give you a lift."
Su Mu was grateful that at that moment, Wen Han didn’t ask why she was there or why she was alone. Such questions might have made all her resilience collapse instantly.
Perhaps it was too cold, and the warmth inside the car made Su Mu slightly uncomfortable; her cheeks instantly turned red like a ripe apple. Gently rubbing her hands, she spoke softly,
"Thank you."
Wen Han responded softly, slowly pressing on the accelerator.
He had gone to the city bureau for a meeting today and hadn’t been out of his house long when he saw a familiar figure ahead. Initially, he thought he was mistaken; at this time, in this place, it was improbable for Su Mu to be there. But as the car got closer by the meter, he became more sure it was her.
However, he didn’t understand why she was here.
Wen Han didn’t ask; she surely didn’t want to talk about it. Seeing such a usually strong person in a fragile state was already testing her resilience. He wouldn’t challenge her limits further.
"Where to?"
Su Mu was silent for a few seconds, "I want to go to the sanatorium."
When Wen Han looked at her, she added, "If you’re not busy."
Wen Han shifted his gaze back,
"Is it the one in the west of the city?"
Su Mu nodded.
"It’s not too far. I’ll take you there."
"Thank you, sorry to trouble you."
After these words, silence returned to the car. Wen Han did not speak again, and Su Mu, in her state, was even less likely to initiate conversation. She leaned quietly against the window, watching the world outside, so still that she seemed almost nonexistent. Wen Han had stolen a few glances at her, only on the last one noticing she had fallen asleep against the window.
Wen Han thought she was just resting her eyes, but upon arriving at their destination, he realized she was genuinely asleep, her breathing so even that he could not bear to disturb her.
Perhaps letting her sleep peacefully would help ease her mood, Wen Han thought. So, he quietly pulled out his phone and sent a text to his department heads at the bureau requesting time off, an unprecedented act for him, as he had never before let personal matters interfere with work.
Since he had never done this before, his supervisor quickly replied, agreeing to his leave. Wen Han breathed a sigh of relief and then set his phone to silent, leaned back in his seat, and quietly kept her company.
A moment later, he reached toward the back seat to grab a coat to cover Su Mu, but as the coat gently landed on her, he inadvertently looked up and spotted a suspicious red mark on her neck.
Wen Han was not naive; he naturally understood what such a mark implied.
At that moment, Wen Han suddenly recalled the question Ji Qingluan had asked him the night before. She had asked, "Do you have feelings for Su Mu?" After a moment of silence, he had given Ji Qingluan a clear answer, "I won’t fall in love with anyone again."
Su Mu was a special person to Wen Han; her presence had made him realize the importance of a family for Wen Shaoyuan and, at certain moments, had even spurred him to contemplate settling down. He felt that if it were with a woman like Su Mu, maybe marriage wouldn’t be such a challenging choice for him.
But as long as he remained a soldier, such thoughts were merely fleeting. His career inevitably meant he couldn’t provide the kind of life a woman might want.
Su Mu had slept deeply and for a long time. When she finally woke up, it was nearly noon, and she was surprised to find herself still in Wen Han’s car, and even though Wen Han was not in his seat, he hadn’t left; he was leaning against the front of the car making a call, speaking softly, probably to avoid waking her.
As she opened the door to get out, Wen Han instinctively looked over and ended his call hurriedly, then walked toward her:
"Awake?"
Su Mu was quite embarrassed:
"Did I delay your work? You should have woken me. I didn’t realize I would sleep for so long."
"It’s okay, I was out here for personal reasons anyway, nothing urgent."
He was lying, for reasons unknown.
Although Wen Han said this, Su Mu’s feelings of guilt were not significantly alleviated. Since it was lunchtime, she suggested they have lunch together:
"If you’re not busy, let’s have lunch together. Consider it thanks for your help before, and for the inconvenience today."
Wen Han glanced at the entrance to the sanatorium:
"Don’t you need to visit someone?"
"I can visit in the afternoon just as well."
Wen Han was tempted to suggest they visit together and grab something to eat nearby, but he remained silent. After all, this involved a part of Su Mu’s privacy, and it was better not to intrude too much. He put his phone back in his pocket and looked at Su Mu, nodding slightly:
"Sure."
