Chapter 105: Said I Don’t Understand, Understood But Don’t Believe
Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Said I Don’t Understand, Understood But Don’t Believe
After dinner, Fu Shinian didn’t leave immediately. He sat in his original spot, staring at something, lost in thought. Auntie Lin stood at the kitchen doorway, hesitating whether to come over and start cleaning. Su Mu saw her and signaled.
"Everyone’s finished eating, you can clear up now."
Auntie Lin responded and began to clean up. Su Mu also got up to help, and Fu Shinian’s gaze just briefly swept over her, but he still did not move.
By the time Su Mu finished helping Auntie Lin clean up the kitchen and came out, Fu Shinian was no longer in the dining room, and he was nowhere to be seen in the living room either. Su Mu figured he must have gone upstairs.
On the second floor, as Su Mu passed the study on her way back to the master bedroom, a voice came from behind the slightly ajar door. He said,
"Su Mu, come in."
In the study, Fu Shinian was not working. Instead, he sat in his office chair, his back to Su Mu, facing the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the increasingly deep night outside. Su Mu could not see his expression, nor discern his mood at that moment, but she felt his mood must not be very good.
Su Mu walked over and stood beside him, extending her hands to gently massage his shoulders.
"Are you tired?"
Fu Shinian didn’t respond, letting her massage him for a while before he slowly began to speak. He said,
"I can’t understand."
"What?"
"What exactly is that note with your name on it that Wen Han has?"
Su Mu’s massaging hands abruptly stopped. Meanwhile, Fu Shinian, who had been resting with his eyes closed, also slowly opened his eyes. He got up from the chair, turned to face a somewhat astonished and nervous Su Mu, and smiled gently.
"What are you nervous about?"
Su Mu shook her head, but couldn’t bring herself to meet Fu Shinian’s gaze.
Fu Shinian however, always appeared calm and composed. He shared his thoughts with Su Mu,
"Normally, a note with one’s own name isn’t something very significant, it could be a certificate, a receipt, or... a debt note. But both certificates and receipts require formal documents, so after thinking it over, it seems the only thing that could link you and him is a debt note. Am I right?"
Su Mu opened her mouth as if she wanted to explain something, but ultimately didn’t know how to start.
Fu Shinian never used to inquire about her private matters. The two maintained a kind of tacit agreement, so Su Mu never thought that one day Fu Shinian would find out about her borrowing money. She had not planned to let him know; the 810,000 yuan in debt was not something she couldn’t repay—it would just take a bit more time.
In fact, if this had come up half a month earlier, knowing about the debt wouldn’t have felt too significant to Su Mu, since it was a debt left by her father, started two years ago. At most, he would have criticized her a bit, maybe calling her frivolous. But now, after Wen Han had helped her clear the debt, everything seemed different, especially since Wen Han now knew Su Mu’s identity.
Being Fu Shinian’s wife and owing money to someone else was a matter of a man’s dignity.
Fu Shinian would not allow such a thing to happen to him.
Su Mu’s silence confirmed Fu Shinian’s suspicion, but he wasn’t angry. He still looked at Su Mu with a smile on his lips:
"How much?"
Su Mu knew she couldn’t avoid the question any longer today. Her silence would only infuriate him more, so she spoke:
"810,000."
Fu Shinian glanced at Su Mu indifferently, walked past her to the desk, and casually picked up a document he had been reading halfway through:
"Mrs. Fu is frugal, never making large expenditures. Even her clothes are mostly models from the year before last, not to mention bags and jewelry. So, how did she suddenly accumulate so much external debt?"
The more nonchalant his tone, the more uneasy Su Mu felt. After two years together, she had completely understood what kind of person Fu Shinian was. The more infuriated he was by something, the calmer he could maintain. Like the ancient method of slow slicing, it made one tremble with fear yet unable to escape.
"This 810,000 isn’t my personal expenditure. It’s the debt my father owed before he passed away. Some incidents occurred recently, and those people demanded I pay it off all at once. It just so happened that I met Wen Han, and he helped me solve this issue. So, this money is temporarily owed to him, and I’ll pay him back gradually."
"Owed?" Fu Shinian chuckled lightly, slamming the document back onto the desk, and looked at Su Mu with a mocking tone, "Pay back?"
Su Mu looked at him and said:
"If you’re unhappy, I can..."
"Can do what? Even if you were completely powerless to handle the situation at that time, has it not been long enough for you to have a little time to pay back the money? Even today, when you were face to face with Wen Han, all you could think of was to issue him an IOU."
"Does Mrs. Fu think I should be happy?" Fu Shinian’s voice finally cracked, rising significantly, "Do you think I should applaud you for such incidents and by the way praise you for being thoughtful, knowing to appreciate how hard it is for me, your husband, to earn money?"
"Su Mu, I give you an allowance, four million every month deposited into your account without a cent missing. But what do you do with it? I thought you were someone with integrity, who would not accept help from anyone, yet in the end, you’d rather borrow from another man but still insist on not using my money. Do you find my money dirty, or is it me, the person, you disdain?"
He posed several questions in succession, not giving Su Mu a chance to speak. Even if Fu Shinian had given her a chance, she felt she couldn’t have said much anyway, especially since Fu Shinian couldn’t possibly understand this affair.
If Su Mu looked at the problem from Fu Shinian’s perspective, she would also feel she was being excessively sentimental, a woman who knows not what’s good for her. But has Fu Shinian ever considered this matter from her perspective?
She married him simply because she liked him, but he always thought she had ulterior motives. Thus, she didn’t use his money, didn’t assume the role of Mrs. Fu, nor did she leverage his power to demand he do anything for her. Fu Shinian would always think she had ulterior motives, so she could only prove it in this naive way, to show that what she wanted was not his money, not the status of Mrs. Fu, nor his power. She just liked him, that was all.
But in Fu Shinian’s eyes, such an approach probably seemed nothing more than sentimental, right?
Su Mu stood there, feeling an inexplicable sorrow welling up from deep within. She looked at Fu Shinian:
"I don’t disdain your money, nor is it because of you as a person. I do this only because I feel it’s not yet the right time."
"Does Mrs. Fu need to pick an auspicious day even to spend money?"
"Even if I told you, you wouldn’t understand," Su Mu lifted her eyes to look at him. "Even if you did, you wouldn’t believe."
