Chapter 311: Chapter 309: Too Much Effort_1
After reaching the kitchen, the person brought him in front of a cupboard and then presented an exquisite dish covered with an equally fine lid.
"Young Master, are you going to eat it now?" the person asked Mu Yingchen, somewhat uncertain.
Mu Yingchen frowned. He wasn’t planning on eating it right that moment; he just wanted to sample it and get used to the taste.
But really, what was the difference?
He hesitated before reluctantly nodding his head.
Upon his affirmation, the person immediately lifted the cover on the dish.
Without lifting the cover, it was fine, but once opened, a pungent and unpleasant smell assaulted his face, sneaking into his respiratory tract through his nose.
Mu Yingchen nearly passed out from the fumes, struggling to suppress the urge to turn and leave, his eyebrows knitting even more tightly.
Can this thing really be edible?
This was much more difficult than eating that what’s-it-called spicy hotpot!
He couldn’t help but take a light breath and was instantly seized by a fit of coughing, coughing painfully, while wondering how on earth Su Wanxia’s grandfather could like such a thing!
"Young Master, are you all right? If the taste isn’t to your liking, I can change it for something else," the chef said, looking at Mu Yingchen with concern.
Upon hearing the chef’s words, Mu Yingchen immediately gestured to stop him. Enduring the discomfort in his chest, he reached out for a pair of chopsticks and stretched towards the already peeled and sliced duck egg.
Just by its color, it looked abnormal, seemingly darker than a normal duck egg. It wouldn’t cause any problems if eaten, would it?
"Are you sure this is edible?" he couldn’t help but turn his head, looking at the chef standing next to him.
The chef, having not expected this question, simply said what he knew without much thought.
"Young Master, rest assured, it’s definitely edible, absolutely no problem."
With the chef’s assurance, Mu Yingchen finally picked up a piece slowly.
If it smelled so foul, what would it taste like in his mouth?
Forget it, for the sake of his happiness, if he had to eat it, then he’d just eat it...
With that thought, he gritted his teeth and brought the piece of duck egg to his lips. As it neared his mouth, that unpleasant odor became even stronger.
His heart clenched, he paused for a second, then resolutely put the duck egg in his mouth, chewing cautiously at first. Surprisingly, it didn’t taste as bad as he had imagined.
Apart from the smell, which he couldn’t stand, the flavor was decent, albeit a tad too salty for him.
After finishing one piece, he reached out for another and continued to eat.
This time, he found it more acceptable than at first, nodding to himself as he ate.
"Hmm, serve a dish of this tonight," he said, putting down his chopsticks and instructing the chef beside him.
The chef nodded immediately: "Yes, Young Master."
Mu Yingchen finally breathed a sigh of relief; thankfully, it wasn’t as repulsive as he had thought.
He intended to head to the garden, but after two steps, turned back. Going there with his breath smelling so foul wouldn’t be good. What if Wanwan asked him about it? He decided he better go rinse his mouth and brush his teeth first.
When he returned to the garden, Su Wanxia and the others looked at him curiously. He’d been so secretive all afternoon.
He responded with a light smile to everyone.
While Su Wanxia and the others didn’t know what Mu Yingchen had been up to, Su Wanxia’s grandfather certainly did. He smiled warmly at his grandson and then approached him, whispering, "How was it? Did it taste good?"
Mu Yingchen nodded indifferently to the curious Elder Mu, "It’s okay."
"It’s okay?" Elder Mu was surprised. He actually said it was okay?
"Mm." Mu Yingchen nodded again.
"You really ate it?" Elder Mu could hardly believe it. His grandson had actually gone and eaten that stuff—for the sake of getting married, he was trying a bit too hard!
"Mm, I ate it." Mu Yingchen replied calmly and then looked at the astonished Elder Mu, "You can try it tonight as well, it tastes quite good."
Elder Mu was speechless. Was his grandson sick with a fever, saying it tasted quite good and even suggesting he try it?
He had seen that stuff back in the day, and he had personally experienced the smell. Something that emitted such an awful odor, how good could it possibly taste?
He really found it hard to believe what Mu Yingchen had said.
"Grandson, are you sure that stuff tastes good?"
Mu Yingchen furrowed his brows and thought for a while. Disregarding the smell, the taste was actually quite good.
"Mm." He nodded at Elder Mu again.
This unsettled Elder Mu, "Yingchen, that thing..." He started to say something but didn’t know what else to say.
Su Man liked eating that because she had strong taste preferences, but why did his grandson also say it was tasty?
"Grandpa, you’ll know once you try a piece tonight," Mu Yingchen chuckled lightly.
Elder Mu’s head immediately shook like a rattle drum—forget it, he still didn’t want to try it.
--
When it was time for dinner, everyone took their seats in unison.
The dining table was rectangular—Elder Mu and Elder Su took one end each, with others sitting across from each other on both sides.
Mu Yingchen deliberately sat to the right of Elder Su and his son, close so the elder could eat comfortably.
As a succession of savory and appetizing dishes were served, the last exquisite dish covered with a lid was placed in front of Mu Yingchen.
It was as though the dish was made specially for him alone.
Everyone couldn’t help but be surprised by the covered dish, wondering what was hidden inside it.
Elder Mu was extremely relieved that he was seated far from them; otherwise, he would have lost his appetite completely.
Thinking this, he couldn’t help but sympathize with little Shanshan girl sitting right next to Mu Yingchen. If he had known, he would have let the little girl sit next to him.
The server then stretched out a hand and lifted the covering lid. Everyone curiously gazed at what was inside the dish.
Before they could get a clear look, a pungent smell made everybody wrinkle their noses.
What is this? Why does it smell so bad!
Although Elder Mu was the farthest away, he still caught a whiff and couldn’t help but scrunch his nose—it was still so repulsive!
Being far away, he was lucky. Su Wanxia and Shanshan were the unluckiest ones, one sitting to his left and the other sitting across from him, with the strong...horrendously bad smell, so bad it was to die for!
Upon smelling it, Elder Su and his son were instantly overjoyed, their eyes widened in surprise. After sniffing twice, their eyes were locked tightly on the dish in front of Mu Yingchen.
This smell was all too familiar—it was something they had enjoyed eating since childhood!
Never would they have thought that after many years of not seeing that stuff, they’d encounter it today at the Mu Family home. This was fantastic—tonight, they could indulge openly, and satisfy their craving after so long...
