Chapter 253: Chapter 253: I Don’t Need Your Help
With a few loud crashes, the drone that launched the fireworks hit the Phoenix International Building.
The fire broke out between the 32nd and 35th floors. It spread fast, and the whole building fell into chaos.
"Is the helicopter coming?" Daniel asked coldly.
He stood in the hallway lined with shiny black marble. His presence alone was enough to calm the nervous bodyguards watching the chaos unfold among the guests.
"It’ll take ten minutes," Ashton replied. He had planned everything carefully but didn’t expect a fire.
They still didn’t know if it was an accident or if someone did it on purpose. If it was planned, getting out might be hard.
"I know where Mommy is!" Stephanie suddenly shouted.
She could locate Chantelle in no time. The tracking system she shared with Kane and Chantelle was among the best in the market.
Stephanie confirmed Chantelle was on the 34th floor. Kane was one floor below, on the 33rd. Chantelle was heading toward him.
"Ashton, take Steph away the moment the helicopter gets here," Daniel ordered. He pushed Stephanie toward Ashton, then rushed downstairs with his men before Stephanie could say a word.
As she watched Daniel’s back disappear, Stephanie remembered how Kane had praised him. If they made it out alive, maybe she’d give Daniel a chance.
"Don’t be scared, Stephanie. Let’s head upstairs," Ashton comforted her softly. He saw her eyes turning red and knew she was about to cry. "Sir will bring Mrs. Wilson and Kane soon."
Ashton had wanted to suggest Daniel leave with Stephanie and let him search for Chantelle. But he knew Daniel would never leave her behind.
So, he decided to stay and keep Stephanie safe, knowing it would give Daniel some peace of mind.
The fire was quickly spreading on the 34th floor. At that time, an elderly couple was celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
Meanwhile, Chantelle followed Lone Wolf and circled the building several times.
When she reached the 34th floor, the fire had just started spreading. Guests were running in every direction. Their screams echoed through the halls.
"Lone Wolf, where did you take Kane?" Chantelle shouted when she saw him holding Kane’s peace talisman. She immediately ran after him.
"Don’t worry. You’ll see your family soon," Lone Wolf said with a strange smile. The flames lit up his face, giving him an eerie look.
A bad feeling hit Chantelle. She quickly checked Kane’s location. Her heart sank when she saw Kane was on the 33rd floor. Worse, Stephanie, who was supposed to be in Carcosa, was now showing up on the top floor.
Earlier, Stephanie’s signal showed she was in Las Tacan. That meant she had someone hack the system and sneak back into Easthan.
"If you touch my children, I swear I’ll make you pay a hundred times over!" Chantelle hissed.
She spun around to leave, but not before flicking a few thin silver needles at Lone Wolf.
Someone like Lone Wolf was usually too careful to fall for her tricks. But an explosion suddenly hit the 33rd floor, and the floor between them swiftly collapsed. Chantelle fell, and flames were rising below her.
Right before she dropped into the fire, something wrapped around her waist. She looked up and saw Lone Wolf clinging to the ceiling, holding his Gold Threads.
"Pretty lady, this is to return the favor I owe you," he said.
"I don’t need your help." Chantelle rolled away, trying to break free from his Gold Threads. She fired a silver rope from her right hand and hooked it to a pillar. Then she climbed up and landed safely.
When she looked back, Lone Wolf was gone. That surprised her. He hadn’t done anything to stop her while she was climbing. Maybe her silver needles had hit him. She had coated them with nerve-numbing medicine. If she moved fast, he wouldn’t have had time to recover.
Chantelle was standing near the right side of the door. But the floor had collapsed, and the door was on fire. She couldn’t escape that way.
"Help, help..."
Chantelle was just about to climb out the window when she suddenly heard a weak voice calling out.
Before the floor collapsed, many guests had already rushed out of the banquet hall. A lot of them ran for the elevator, but it exploded right after the doors closed.
The rest ran upstairs in panic.
Some people stayed behind, shocked and unsure of what to do. When the floor collapsed, most of them were swallowed by the flames.
In one corner, Chantelle saw two elderly people holding each other tightly. From their clothes, it was clear they were the couple being honored at the fiftieth wedding anniversary.
"Help, please save us." The old man’s face and clothes were covered in dust, but he still looked alert. The woman in his arms had a deep cut on her forehead and wasn’t moving.
"Someone ran into my wife. She hit her head on the table and passed out," he said.
Chantelle checked the old lady’s wound and realized she was no longer breathing.
The old man looked at her anxiously, afraid she wouldn’t help them because his wife had passed out.
Chantelle hesitated, then gently broke the news. "I’m sorry for your loss."
The old man’s heart shattered. He shook his head, refusing to accept it. "No... baby won’t leave me! She just fainted! Leave us here. Someone will come. Baby won’t leave me."
Chantelle paused, then made a decision. "We’ll go together."
She lifted the old lady and tied her securely to her back.
"Mister, step back," Chantelle said as she aimed her silver rope at the door.
Just as the hook latched on, a loud bang echoed. The burning door collapsed and crashed down in front of them.
"Mister, you go first," Chantelle said as she gently pushed the shaking old man forward.
But just as he took a few steps, another explosion blasted from below. Chantelle quickly pulled him back.
Flames were rising fast. Her heart was pounding. Kane was still on the 33rd floor. She had to check on him.
"We’ll go upstairs through the window," she said, leading the old man carefully to the edge. She grabbed a rock and smashed the glass open.
After laying the old lady down, Chantelle pulled out a pair of gloves and boots from her bag. The gear was made from a special material that could stick firmly to walls and carry at least 100 kilograms.
"Mister, I’m going downstairs to find my son," Chantelle said. "Can you use this equipment and climb up to the 35th floor by yourself?"
She thought he could. He looked like someone who had stayed active and strong over the years.
