Chapter 85: No Longer There
Chapter 85: Chapter 85: No Longer There
Su Lu truly wanted to ask not about Jiang Li, but about Bo Jingshen.
She wanted to ask, "And what about you? Why were you at the underground racing track? Jiang Li went there for living expenses, but what about you? What was it for? It couldn’t possibly just be for fun..."
But Bo Jingshen clearly didn’t plan on bringing up the subject, so Su Lu had to hold back, asking about Jiang Li instead, even though she wasn’t that interested in Jiang Li’s personal and family affairs.
Bo Jingshen said, "No parents are open-minded, especially when it comes to matters involving Jiang Li. More than 80% of parents domestically are not open-minded, and parents from a background like Jiang Li’s even more so. They are traditional and care about face."
From a young age, Jiang Li could not be described as stubborn, his character was even considered gentle, but if he truly became obstinate, then not even ten bulls could pull him back.
"At that time, he had essentially severed ties with his family. If it weren’t for Jiang Su later taking over the family business, not willing to let his brother continue to suffer... Jiang Er would still just be penniless, nowhere near being Second Young Master Jiang," Bo Jingshen said indifferently.
So that’s why he still doesn’t return home to this day.
As expected, every family has its own difficult scriptures.
But Su Lu still felt somewhat... surprised.
Initially not curious, she now felt a little bit of curiosity and asked softly, "So, Jiang Li... did he sever ties with his family because of Ying Xi?"
Just... it doesn’t seem like it, for the sake of a star? It doesn’t seem like his fervor would reach that extent, right? She felt that Jiang Li’s fervor for Ying Xi wasn’t that intense.
Bo Jingshen lowered his gaze, a flicker of desolation passing unnoticed by Su Lu in his eyes.
She only saw him shake his head, his voice not sounding any different from before—equally calm and indifferent.
"No," Bo Jingshen said, "Ah Li has no one left to sever ties over, the person he could have done that for in the past is no longer here."
No longer here.
No longer here.
Su Lu blinked, taking a moment to realize that this "no longer here" meant the heaviest sense of "no longer here."
Su Lu opened her mouth but couldn’t speak, uttering only a soft "ah," almost like a sigh.
"Ah Li just went crazy. I heard that he wasn’t so spoiled when he was young. But now, he refuses to be manipulated any longer, and there’s nothing left that can be used to manipulate him."
As he spoke, Bo Jingshen suddenly turned his gaze to lock eyes with her.
He said, "So tell me, what’s so good about families like yours?"
Su Lu paused, lowered her gaze with a smile that was somewhat helpless and a touch sad, "Indeed, there’s nothing good about them."
Once, she almost dragged him into a danger from which there was no salvation.
Once, she was manipulated, because the leverage that could control her was far too important.
The atmosphere suddenly fell into silence.
No one spoke, and Su Lu still held the bunch of flowers Jiang Li had cut for her from the backyard garden.
The fresh fragrance of the flowers carried with the night breeze, spiraling into her breath.
Su Lu was silent for a moment before thinking of changing the subject.
She smiled faintly, "I was shallow. I saw Jiang Li treat Ying Xi well today and thought..."
Bo Jingshen suddenly reached his hand over.
Su Lu’s eyes widened, her pupils contracting slightly, but she didn’t make any move to avoid it, staring straight as his hand came closer, bent a knuckle, and flicked her nose.
"Who would have thought, Su Xiaolu, you’re quite the gossip?" Bo Jingshen said with raised eyebrows, a teasing smirk in his eyes.
Su Lu waved her hands, "I’m not, I didn’t, don’t talk nonsense, I was just asking casually."
Bo Jingshen said, "So shall I not answer?"
Su Lu fell silent for two seconds before sighing with resignation, "Still... answer."
Bo Jingshen snickered with a faint smile, "Just don’t mention it in front of Ah Li, but you’ve always been tight-lipped, so there’s no need to worry about that."
If she truly didn’t want someone to know something, her mouth was like a tightly sealed clamshell, nearly impossible to pry open.
Su Lu nodded.
Bo Jingshen said, "That person is Ying Xi’s only relative, his one and only younger brother. Taking good care of Ying Xi, that’s Ah Li’s last wish."
"So that’s how it is," Su Lu murmured.
All of a sudden, she remembered when she was at Lieying Base, watching Jiang Li gaze at Ying Xi with such intense focus, unwavering attention. At the time, she had simply thought it was because Jiang Li was a fan, which is why he watched so intently.
Now, looking back, perhaps, Jiang Li was staring intently, as if trying to see the shadow of another person through that face.
It had never occurred to Su Lu that the usually carefree Jiang Li would have such a story.
"Should we... leave now?" Su Lu asked Bo Jingshen.
Bo Jingshen shook his head, "Let’s wait a bit, Second Young Master Jiang will come out."
Before this conversation, Su Lu might not have completely believed this, as it would have been perfectly normal and reasonable for Jiang Li’s own brother to invite him to stay at his home for the night.
But now, even Su Lu felt, Jiang Li would not agree.
And sure enough, less than ten minutes had passed.
The mansion gates opened, and Jiang Li walked out, followed by Jiang Su.
Jiang Li’s face wore a calm expression, showing neither joy nor anger.
Trailing behind him, Jiang Su’s brows were slightly furrowed. It wasn’t so much anger or displeasure as it was helplessness and resignation.
"He’ll go back to the city with you," Jiang Su said to Bo Jingshen.
Bo Jingshen nodded, then tossed the car keys to Jiang Li, "You drive."
Taking the car keys, Jiang Li nodded silently, got into the driver’s seat without a word, and slammed the car door shut.
"I’m off," Bo Jingshen said flatly to Jiang Su.
Jiang Su nodded with resignation, "Say a few words to him for me, he’s throwing a fit."
"Can’t be persuaded," Bo Jingshen rejected without hesitation, completely disregarding that he had just mooched a meal from Jiang Su with his family in tow.
Jiang Su looked even more helpless, "You don’t soften up even after eating someone’s food?"
Bo Jingshen gave him a glance, "So why are you bothering him? Don’t you know his temper better than I do? I can’t persuade him, but I can take him out for a bit later."
Hearing this, Jiang Su could only nod, "Well, that works too."
"We’re off," Bo Jingshen waved his hand.
Su Lu also nodded towards Jiang Su, "I’ll take my leave now."
"See you," Jiang Su nodded back at her.
Bo Jingshen opened the car door, ushered Su Lu into the back seat, and then got in himself.
Then, as soon as he was in, he buckled Su Lu’s seatbelt.
Su Lu blinked. Was it really so formal to sit in the back seat? She hadn’t worn a seatbelt on the way here when she was in the back seat.
But very soon, Jiang Li’s actions told her that the reason she hadn’t needed to wear a seatbelt on the way over was that, at that time, Jiang Li wasn’t the one steering.
What was this breakneck speed? Su Lu felt her heart lodged in her throat, only needing to open her mouth for her heart, unable to control its piercing screams, to burst forth with it...
