Chapter 66: How Long Have You Been Together?

Chapter 66: Chapter 66: How Long Have You Been Together?

Ye Yan exchanged contact information with the old man and crossed the bridge back to Ao City.

Ah Si had completed his mission and naturally stopped following her.

As she drove into the residential complex, she saw someone standing at the entrance to her building, a lonely silhouette stretched long by the moonlight, casting a solitary shadow on the ground.

The sound of the car engine ceased, the headlights went out, and Ye Yan opened the car door and got out.

"Why are you here?" Ye Yan asked, holding her car keys as she approached, "How did the doorman let you in this time?"

Lin Yihang grinned and said, "I just showed my face."

What he really did was buy an apartment here.

He had intended to buy one closer to Ye Yan, but there were no vacancies at the moment, so he had to settle for the building in the back, his floor facing hers across the open space.

"Are you here to look for evidence for your client again?"

"No," Lin Yihang handed her an umbrella, "Just returning this."

"I said you didn’t need to return it, you’re too polite." Ye Yan reached out to take it, "And you even made a special trip."

"Have you eaten yet?" Lin Yihang asked.

"I have."

Lin Yihang looked somewhat disappointed, but he quickly smiled, "I thought the noodle shop across from your complex was good. Never mind, next time."

Ye Yan nodded, "Alright, next time."

After Lin Yihang left that day, Ye Yan couldn’t help but think about his true purpose.

Would the number one criminal lawyer in Ao City make a rash visit to a witness without proper arrangements? Others might, but Lin Yihang certainly would not allow himself to make such a novice mistake.

The so-called missed calls were just his excuse to come up, to order food, and to deliberately ask for an umbrella when he left.

It was probably all for the sake of paying another visit today.

Seeing the unflustered girl in front of him, not even showing a hint of compromise, Lin Yihang knew she might have guessed his intent.

He said nothing, simply not wanting to make him feel too embarrassed.

"Then, let’s have noodles together next time," Lin Yihang said with his usual composure.

Ye Yan watched as Lin Yihang walked away.

He hadn’t gone far when suddenly he turned back.

In Ye Yan’s bewildered gaze, he leaned in slightly and smoothed out the collar of her shirt on the left side.

"I’m sorry, I’ve been thinking about it... but I couldn’t help myself; I have OCD."

Ye Yan looked down and saw the collar of her shirt was perfectly smooth when it should have been turned up.

"My apologies," Lin Yihang bowed his head to apologize with sincerity, "I overstepped."

He had been very close just now, and the scent that lingered at his nose was as memorable as when they were younger, when he would stealthily stand behind her during activities, as the wind brought the fragrance of the young girl, indelible and unforgettable.

Ye Yan was about to say it didn’t matter when she heard footsteps slowly approaching—the air turned magical, and even the wind seemed cold.

She looked up only to see someone emerging from the shadows, unhurried as if a hunter was closing in on the prey he had long been stalking.

Seeing him, a surge of joy flooded Ye Yan’s heart, but it quickly turned to anxiety, like a child caught misbehaving.

No, she hadn’t done anything wrong; why feel anxious?

Thinking this, Ye Yan met Fu Xingzhou’s gaze with calm eyes, his dark as spreading ink, cold as an abyss, a single glance chilling to the bone.

He took out a lighter and lit a cigarette, took a drag, and with a smirk that wasn’t quite a smile, said, "Lawyer Lin, what a coincidence, wandering all the way to someone else’s building."

Lin Yihang responded calmly, "Quite the coincidence indeed, Mr. Fu has wandered to the root of the tree as well."

He nodded to Ye Yan, "I’m leaving first."

Lin Yihang knew that staying even a second longer, offering one more explanation, would only create trouble for Ye Yan. Fu Xingzhou was not someone to provoke easily, and today the fault was his.

He would apologize to her another day.

After Lin Yihang left, the air fell into an eerie silence again.

Fu Xingzhou’s cigarette wasn’t finished yet, his gaze coldly fixed on Ye Yan, "When did you and Lin Yihang start?"

"What are you talking about?" Ye Yan intended to explain, but his blunt accusation solidified her supposed sin.

Fu Xingzhou crushed the cigarette butt underfoot, "You’ve gotten physically close. It must have been a while now. Right, you were each other’s first love, weren’t you? They say first loves are unforgettable. Meeting again after ten years, rekindling old flames—that would make quite the story."

"You’re so good at making up stories, it’s a pity you’re not writing a book." Ye Yan ignored his madness and turned to leave.

She swiped her card to enter the elevator. As the doors were about to close, a hand held them open, and a tall figure barged in.

The space immediately felt confined, the air thinner, as if surrounded by the man’s overwhelming presence, domineering and unfeeling.

"The day it rained in Ao City, Lin Yihang was at your place," Fu Xingzhou said coldly. "Right?"

"You’ve guessed it already, haven’t you? Then that’s it." Ye Yan turned away, unwilling to explain any further.

He’d never actually sought her confirmation, jumping to conclusions on his own and believing them wholeheartedly.

So whatever she said, he wouldn’t believe.

He had never truly trusted her from his bones.

When the elevator arrived, Ye Yan walked ahead, her silhouette proud and stubborn.

Fu Xingzhou followed her, his expression gloomy and cold.

Ye Yan used her fingerprint to unlock the door, and quickly turned to close it.

Fu Xingzhou was nearly shut out, pressing forcefully against the door, jeering, "This door allows Lin Yihang in but not me? Dr. Ye, you’ve become quite capable after not seeing me for a few days."

With a push, Ye Yan stood no chance, stumbling two steps back.

"Fu Xingzhou, I don’t want to argue with you." Ye Yan stood in the middle of the room, not turning on the light, letting only the vague moonlight wash over her. "You’re not calm enough now, lacking a rational attitude. If you step through this door, the outcome won’t be what you desire. It’ll only get worse."

"Kicking me out?"

"This door can be opened with your fingerprint; I can’t kick you out," Ye Yan’s face flushed. "I just hope you can seriously consider what I just said."

Fu Xingzhou didn’t speak.

The motion-activated lights in the hallway came on and off, casting fluctuating shadows across his face.

After a while, the man lifted his hand and slammed the door shut.

Darkness enveloped the room once more, and Ye Yan heard the sound of the elevator doors opening outside.

She sat down by the sofa, quietly waiting for time to pass, so quiet that she could hear the clear sound of her own heartbeat.

One beat, two beats...

Ah Si drove, asking, "Mr. Fu, shall we head back to Yuqiao?"

The master had rushed straight to Grand Hall after getting off the plane, his expression brooding, his mood volatile, chain-smoking one cigarette after another.

Even with the windows down, the car was full of smoke.

"Tell me again about today’s auction," the man said, snuffing out his cigarette, his expression inscrutable.

Ah Si’s hand tightened on the steering wheel, sitting up straight in anticipation.

Unclear as to why the boss suddenly wanted to hear about the auction, but when the boss asked, he had to recount everything in detail.
