Chapter 185: No Evidence
Chapter 185: Chapter 185: No Evidence
Ye Yan’s IV drip had just finished when she removed the needle herself and got off the hospital bed.
That phone was crucial, she had to have it in her hands to be at ease.
It wasn’t that she distrusted Chai Chen, but she couldn’t let down Jia Qing.
Chai Chen was shocked to see Ye Yan walking over in her hospital gown, looking frail and weak. "How did you end up like this?"
She was wrapped in gauze, and there were small cuts that did not require bandaging, only simple treatment.
"I’ll tell you about it later," Ye Yan said as she opened the car door, hurriedly flipping up the sun visor.
Seeing it empty made her heart race with panic.
How could this happen, she had clearly left the phone here, but now it was gone.
Ignoring her injuries, Ye Yan started to search frantically inside the car.
"What are you looking for? I’ll help you," Chai Chen was scared by her anxious demeanor. "The window has been smashed, someone must have tampered with your car, shall we call the police?"
"No, there’s no need."
How could she call the police without evidence?
Ye Yan had searched the entire car and still couldn’t find the phone.
She felt somewhat desperate and even more sorry for Jia Qing.
She was certain the phone hadn’t been taken by Li Jin; he had been in her sight the whole time and did not mention it at all.
If it wasn’t Li Jin, could it really be that a thief had visited?
If it was a thief, she might never find the phone again.
A tide of guilt, anxiety, and unease overwhelmed her.
Ye Yan’s legs wobbled, and her body, weak from the ordeal, was about to collapse.
Chai Chen caught her in his arms, his voice filled with distress. "Let’s go back to the ward for now. Even if you don’t care about yourself, don’t you care about your child?"
The child was always her Achilles’ heel.
Ye Yan laid back down in the hospital bed, and only then did Chai Chen ask, "What exactly happened?"
She had not intended to keep Chai Chen in the dark and recounted the events to him, glossing over the most terrifying parts.
"This Li Jin looks like no good; to commit such an inhumane act," Chai Chen fumed. "I’m going to call the police."
Ye Yan stopped him. "If calling the police would help, I would have done it already."
She still did not know whether Li Jin was alive or dead. If he was alive, he would surely seek revenge.
"That still doesn’t mean we can just watch him get away with it," Chai Chen calmed down after a moment. "Fortunately, the child is fine, it’s just you who’s suffered."
Surviving a close call, getting stitches without anesthesia—these were not things an average person could endure.
Ye Yan shook her head. "I don’t mind about myself, but this time, I used you as a shield. When Fu Xingzhou questioned me, I had to say what I did, unfairly dragging you into this, and I’m so sorry."
"Don’t talk nonsense, I’ve told you before, once the child is born, I will be his godfather. And when the day comes that you feel you can entrust your life to me, just drop the ’god’ from it. So, either way, I’d end up with the title," he said.
Chai Chen really was too kind. If he were a boyfriend, a husband, he’d undoubtedly be the most considerate, gentle, and reliable man in the world.
But the kinder he was, the more uneasy and guilty she felt.
Today’s encounter with Fu Xingzhou had made one thing crystal clear to Ye Yan.
That man was branded onto her heart, and to carve him out would mean grinding down the brand.
But it was a long and arduous process.
She didn’t want Chai Chen to grow weary alongside her.
Such a Chai Chen deserved a better girl, not someone like her, pregnant with another’s child, with her heart preoccupied by someone else, possibly making him wait endlessly.
So selfish!
Before Ye Yan could speak, Chai Chen seemed to read her thoughts.
"I’ve said it before, it’s my willing choice, not seeking reciprocation. Even if you fall for someone else along the way, I won’t harbor any resentment," Chai Chen said gently and earnestly. "Ye Yan, there are many forms of love in this world. It’s not only perfect when it’s reciprocated. For me, the process itself is enough to cherish for a lifetime."
Ye Yan silently watched him, tears welling up in her eyes.
"I’ve already asked Director Bi for a leave of absence on your behalf. You should focus on recovering these next few days."
Chai Chen patted the back of her hand, "I’ll stay here, ensuring that no one hurts you."
Chai Chen’s forthright demeanor left her with no excuses to demur any longer.
But she quickly thought of something, about that phone, someone else knew.
Before she nearly lost consciousness, worried that someone would take her phone, she kept mumbling the words ’phone’ and ’child.’
Fu Xingzhou, being so smart, definitely could deduce something about the phone from these clues.
Now that the phone was missing, could it have been taken by him?
~
Everyone knew Fu Xingzhou was in a bad mood.
The bodyguards stood at a distance, no one daring to speak.
Fu Xingzhou sat in the car, smoking one cigarette after another.
The bodyguards hesitated, not daring to offer a wet wipe, all visibly restless.
It wasn’t until the ring of a phone broke the torturous silence.
"Sir, Li Jin has been found."
There was a fire in the pit of Fu Xingzhou’s stomach, scorching him, yet with no outlet for release.
And Li Jin was the unlucky one selected.
After escaping from the car, Li Jin had been searching nearby for Ye Yan, but despite a lengthy search, he found nothing.
Just as he was about to head back, Fu Xingzhou’s men found him first.
Fu Xingzhou extinguished the half-smoked cigarette in his hand, "Take him to Wu Gui."
Wu Gui lived in a villa in the suburbs.
They arrived in the early hours of the morning.
Li Jin was thrown into a pitch-black cell and was left unattended.
"Is anyone there? Is anyone there?"
Li Jin still bore the scars from the car accident; blood had clotted in many places.
But the wounds wet from the rain hadn’t been treated, causing throbbing, piercing pain.
If he had to endure through the night like this, they would surely become inflamed by morning.
No one responded; everyone was probably asleep at this hour.
Li Jin had no choice but to huddle in a corner of the room.
The pain from his injuries was too intense for him to sleep, and so he struggled through the night until there was finally some noise with dawn’s approach.
"Is anyone there?"
Li Jin went to the door, shouting loudly.
Even now, he still didn’t know who had brought him here or for what purpose.
But one thing he was sure of, whoever had brought him here was not a friend, otherwise, they would have taken him to the hospital already.
After waiting for a long time, someone finally came from outside.
The person opened the door.
"Brother, could you give me some water?" Li Jin saw the man dressed in black, looking like a bodyguard.
The bodyguard glanced at him and scoffed, "Water?"
"Yes, yes, yes, I’m dying of thirst, I beg you, just give me a cup of water." Li Jin was now trapped and didn’t dare to put on airs, he was utterly subservient even to a bodyguard.
"Alright, wait here."
After the bodyguard left, he quickly returned with a cup in hand.
Li Jin eagerly took it, but as he brought it to his lips, he sensed something wrong.
