Mountain Looting: Targeted by a Leopard at the Start -
Chapter 163 - 162 Don’t Sleep Alone, Leopard!
Chapter 163: Chapter 162 Don’t Sleep Alone, Leopard!
The leopard officially moved into the farm.
Xu Yang reported the matter to the police station.
"The leopard just clings to your farm and doesn’t leave?"
Police officer Liu Ming was shocked.
Usually, when people call the police, it’s about wild animals damaging property or posing a threat to residents’ safety.
At that point, the police would go to drive them away.
Like driving away black bears, for example.
But when Xu Yang called the police, he merely explained that the leopard had come to his place, indicating that the leopard was pretty comfortable there.
This left Liu Ming somewhat at a loss.
In all these years, he had never heard of such a thing!
And it was a leopard at that.
The leopards here, also known as Northeastern leopards, are rarer than the Northeast tigers.
Genuine rare species.
Definitely top-level protected creatures.
Leopard issues are usually major matters, and if the animal can’t fend for itself, it would be sent to a rescue center.
But this leopard was an exception, an adult wild leopard that didn’t seem in need of rescue.
It’s worth mentioning that Xu Yang didn’t tell the police station that the leopard couldn’t hunt, as he was also worried about Xiao Hua being sent to a wildlife rescue center.
It would be too suffocating for the leopard there.
Xu Yang’s farm wasn’t large, but he would take it into the mountains from time to time, offering it much more freedom.
He’d have an extra companion on his outings into the mountains in the future.
He would bring Xiao Hua along.
And so the matter was settled.
Xu Yang found a den for the leopard.
Leopards usually rest in rock caves or trees, and their range of activity is relatively fixed when food is plentiful.
Put simply, when there is enough to eat, they aren’t very fond of roaming around.
Xu Yang decided to keep it in his own yard.
This creature needed to be watched at all times.
The police station and the Forestry Bureau agreed to let the leopard stay on the farm, but any problems that arose would be Xu Yang’s responsibility.
"Xiao Hua, grow up quickly, I will teach you how to hunt."
"The areas where humans live may not be suitable for you," Xu Yang said to the little leopard.
In people’s subconscious, wild animals should live in the wild, not be kept in cages or in an observation room by humans.
However, some wild animals do like living with people, especially humans with farms.
In Russia, many families keep bears, and there are many such examples.
And there’s a household that keeps the black panther Luna, who’s also adorable, with big watery eyes, very cute.
Xiao Hua falls into this category, with no trace of fierceness on its face, all dazed and cute.
When Xu Yang spoke to it, it would cock its head to the side, full of curiosity.
"Forget it, as long as you are happy, take your time," Xu Yang relented.
"Let’s set three rules: if you exhibit hunting behavior or attack any livestock, I’ll put you in the forest," Xu Yang reiterated.
The little leopard seemed to understand somewhat and nodded its head.
At this moment, Little Black came running over.
Without Xu Yang realizing, Little Black had also grown into a full-size dog. He waved his hand, and Little Black and the little leopard went off to play and frolic together happily.
The little leopard was slightly larger, not much different from a large dog if you don’t consider its hunting ability.
Mainly because felines are too strong in combat, people can’t help but be afraid when they see one.
Initially, Xu Yang had worried that the leopard wouldn’t adapt to life on the farm,
but it turned out he was completely overthinking it.
It seemed very happy and had no idea of attacking any animals whatsoever.
"Bambi, come over here!"
Seeing the Sika deer in a daze, Xu Yang called out loudly.
The Sika deer knew its name and immediately ran over happily upon hearing Xu Yang’s call.
It would glance over at the little leopard from time to time.
Seemingly still a bit afraid.
Xu Yang: "It’s okay, Xiao Hua won’t attack you, don’t worry."
Little Mei Hua moved her head, seemingly saying,
"How can I not worry? It’s not you who’s getting eaten!"
The scene was always amusing.
The leopard adapted well to farm life.
At night, Xu Yang prepared a den for it, but the creature didn’t want to stay and instead ran over to the door of Xu Yang’s room, howling.
Xu Yang draped on a coat and got out of bed, and as soon as he opened the door, it ran right in.
The little leopard’s eyes were slightly pitiful, almost as if to say it didn’t want to sleep alone.
"What, you’ve got to come here to sleep too?"
"Alright then, but if you come in to sleep, you’ll have to take baths afterward, to get rid of any parasites and the like," Xu Yang told the little leopard.
It was autumn, and the weather was a bit cold, the farm’s heating wasn’t on, and the coziest place was the bed.
Xu Yang thus let the little leopard have its way.
Afterward, he climbed into his warm bed and lay down.
The little leopard snuggled up beside him and comfortably lay on its side.
It quickly adapted to the bed’s environment, leaning against Xu Yang’s quilt, and contentedly closed its eyes to sleep.
Xu Yang didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
He was actually sharing a bed with a leopard.
Just like people who have pet cats at home.
But it didn’t really matter anymore.
The next day.
As soon as Xu Yang opened his eyes, he caught sight of a big leopard’s face right in front of him.
"Go on, move aside."
Xu Yang called out to it, and Little Leopard finally moved aside.
But anyhow, another day of life had begun.
He got up, washed up, and prepared to check on the animals.
The first thing to do after getting up every day was to feed the animals on the farm.
This was all necessary.
Then it was checking the farm and doing various chores.
And just like that, a day went by.
Xu Yang brought out the leopard and fed it some raw meat.
This fellow still had to be well-fed. It absolutely couldn’t go hungry.
It better not eat his chickens, ducks, or anything like that.
Xiao Hua looked gentle and pretty, and gradually, the staff were not afraid anymore, doing whatever they needed to do.
Little Black and Xiao Hua got along well and would frolic together whenever they saw each other.
Influenced by Little Black, Xiao Hua also became more and more dazedly cute.
Xu Yang, having nothing else to do, strolled to the greenhouse.
He had to check on the strawberry seedlings.
Strawberries can bear fruit several times, by removing the weaker seedlings and taking good care of them, more strawberries could grow later on.
The advantage of cultivation lay in this.
Once planted well, they can produce batch after batch and earn a bit more.
"This greenhouse can be used to plant whatever we want in the future."
"When the Gem Corn is ripe, I’ll pull out all the corn stalks, and we’ll just plant fruits."
"Plant a variety of types, just like those ecological farms, all sorts of different things."
"This greenhouse doesn’t focus on revenue, just earning a bit will do."
Xu Yang was planning the staff’s next steps.
A few people discussed what to plant.
"I think planting some grapes is good. Grapes are also suitable for greenhouse cultivation," Ma Wen, who had run a farm before, proposed his idea.
"Farmer, when I was in school, I studied greenhouse crops. Peaches, kiwifruits, cherries can all be planted," Wang Wu added.
Li Shan had no objections, he generally spoke little but listened attentively.
He was the hardest working on the farm.
After chatting like this, Xu Yang found out that he wanted to plant them all.
Grapes, peaches, kiwifruits, cherries.
Mainly because he wanted to eat them.
This aspect of farmhouse living was rather nice—it meant planting whatever vegetables he wanted to eat.
The tomatoes, green onions, cilantro, leeks, and chili peppers in the yard could all be according to his preferences.
Now that Xu Yang had the greenhouse, planting fruits could be scheduled.
"The more you talk about it, the more I want to plant some."
"The main thing is, our farm doesn’t do agrotourism, and having too many varieties is hard to manage."
"Then let’s plant three or four varieties next year."
"In a couple of days, let’s pick those little dragon fruits first; they are almost ripe, and we can sell whatever we can sell," Xu Yang instructed.
It was almost time for the dragon fruits to ripe.
If the farm could grow a wide range of crops in the future, there would be produce to harvest in every season, making the farm’s resources truly abundant.
Even without stepping outside, there would be no lack of food and drink throughout the four seasons.
This was the advantage of engaging in agricultural and sideline production.
"Farmer, no problem. Whenever you need us to pick, we’ll do it right away. When the time comes, we’ll sell them at the small market, and we’ll make sure everything is sold," Wang Wu assured.
"Alright, it’ll be a bit of hard work in two days. We’ll eat as we please and then sell the rest."
"With this, the greenhouse will have yielded something," Xu Yang added a few instructions.
Everyone else also had their own tasks to attend to, so they went off to get busy. It wasn’t long before it was almost noon.
Xu Yang also went to check on the situation of the crops in the greenhouse.
For instance, the blueberries. Whenever he noticed an issue with any section of blueberries, he would immediately call over the staff to take note, preparing to address the issue.
Xu Yang was an expert in cultivation; he knew the conditions of the crops well.
With just a glance, he knew what to do.
That’s why his farm had such high yields per acre.
Having an expert in charge definitely meant higher productivity.
The staff also talked about this among themselves.
They all admired Xu Yang’s knowledge in planting, and it was because of him that the farm could develop so steadily.
"Looking at the weather, in another half a month, it will start to snow," Xu Yang said, looking at the sky, feeling contemplative.
The winters here were quite cold, warm only inside buildings.
He then glanced at the Little Leopard playing around.
The female leopard probably brought it to the farm because she was worried about the cold winter and didn’t want the little one to freeze.
A truly far-sighted consideration.
Xu Yang went to the deepest part of the greenhouse to see the two coconut trees he had planted.
He cherished these two coconut trees quite a bit.
Rarity lends charm.
In the tropics, coconut trees are very common, and there are even large plantations of them.
But in the Northeast, they were genuine treasures.
If someone said they had grown a coconut tree, it was sure to draw a crowd of onlookers.
"This tree of mine should be able to yield at least three or four coconuts," Xu Yang mused.
"I’ll just wait to pick them during the icy month of December."
"Whether it’s drinking the coconut water or making stuffed coconut rice, both are great."
Looking at the coconut trees, Xu Yang already had plans in mind.
