Chapter 952: Grandma’s Incredible Identity (1) Chapter 952: Grandma’s Incredible Identity (1) Jian Luo’s face showed a hint of astonishment, “Grandpa, I’ve never heard you mention someone named Shen Yan.”
“It’s a long story, all old events from years ago,” the elder Mr. Jian said with a profound gaze, carrying a tinge of regret.
“I do not know if the Shen Yan you speak of is the same person I know; if it were, that would be wonderful.”
The elder Mr. Jian did not conceal his nostalgia for Shen Yan in his words, leaving Jian Luo even more confused, “Grandpa, is this Shen Yan the child of your friend, or does Shen Yan have some relationship with our Jian Family?”
About the same age as his father, could he be the child of some old friend of his Grandpa?
“He,” the elder Mr. Jian stroked his beard and sighed softly, “has no shallow relation with our Jian Family, and with you as well.”
Upon hearing this, everyone’s expressions grew even more peculiar.
“Grandpa, is he a relative of our family?” Surprised for a moment, Jian Qing quickly caught on and boldly speculated.
The elder Mr. Jian glanced at her with a smile in his eyes, and amid the curious gazes of everyone, he slowly said, “Little Qingqing is clever.”
No sooner had he spoken than a thunderbolt seemed to detonate in everyone’s hearts.
“Can’t be?” Jian Luo blurted out.
Shen Yan was related to them, could it be such a coincidence?
“Grandpa, could you be mistaken?”
The elder Mr. Jian chuckled, “When Aqin finds the photo, we’ll know whether the Shen Yan I’m talking about is the same person you’re all talking about, and if he is, then he’s related to our Jian Family.”
“Grandpa, how come you’ve never mentioned we have a Shen relative in our Jian Family?” Jian Qing’s eyes shimmered with a touch of doubt.
“That’s a long story, longer than a bolt of cloth. Once Aqin sends the photo, I’ll explain in detail,” the elder Mr. Jian said.
“Grandpa, is the Shen Yan you’re talking about the one with an older brother?” Quan Jingwu, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly spoke up.
It might be coincidental to have the same name and surname, but if they were brothers with the same name, it would be too much of a coincidence.
The elder Mr. Jian turned to look at him, his eyes filled with a touch of astonishment, “How did you know?”
Quan Jingwu asked again, “Is his name Shen Hua?”
With these words, the elder Mr. Jian became restless.
Could it really be them, had they not died?
Seeing the elder Mr. Jian’s reaction, Quan Jingwu and Jian Qing exchanged glances, and presumably, they were somewhat certain.
“Grandpa, what is the matter, do you also know this Shen Hua?” Jian Luo helped him sit down and handed him a glass of water.
“Bai Jue said you must not get too agitated, drink some water first to calm down.”
The elder Mr. Jian took a sip of water, his voice still somewhat hoarse, “It seems it really is them, after so many years, I never thought he would still be alive.”
“Grandpa, what do you mean by that?” Jian Luo asked, “What exactly happened? What’s the relationship between the brothers Shen Hua and Shen Yan, and our family?”
“Ding—”
Just as the elder Mr. Jian was about to speak, the cellphone notification sounded. He glanced at it, saw it was from Uncle Qin, and hurriedly picked up the phone to check.
Upon opening the photo, Jian Luo and the others crowded around to look.
The photo’s backdrop was all too familiar to Jian Qing and the others; it was the courtyard in the Manor. Among those pictured, one of the main characters, whom Jian Qing and Jian Luo knew all too well, was their mother, Jian Wei.
Jian Wei sat on the swing, while the two men in the photograph stood to her left and right, their similar youthful features suggesting at a glance that they were brothers.
“It’s him.”
With just one look, Jian Qing recognized one of the men in the photo as Shen Yan.
Although the photograph was many years old, time seemed to have been especially kind to Shen Yan. The polish of the years had only made the scholarly looking young man appear even more mature and charming.
His gentle and refined demeanor bore a certain resemblance to Jian Luo.
“Little Qingqing, are you sure it’s him?” Grandpa Jian pointed to the man standing on the left side of Jian Wei in the photo, seeking confirmation once again.
Jian Qing, “Yes, I’m sure.”
She had lost her memory and couldn’t recall what Shen Hua looked like, but she could recognize Shen Yan at a glance.
“Grandpa, why are they standing with my mom?” Jian Luo scrutinized the photo, curious about the relationship between Jian Wei and the smiling Shen brothers.
“Sit down for a moment. I will explain it to you slowly,” Grandpa Jian said, lifting his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. After confirming, he seemed somewhat melancholic.
The atmosphere fell silent, then Grandpa Jian’s hoarse voice began to speak softly.
“As it turns out, Shen Yan and Shen Hua are actually your cousins.”
It was like a bolt from the blue, buzzing in the heads of Jian Qing and Jian Luo.
What?
Cousins?
To suddenly have cousins – no, two cousins – what a shadow this casts over one’s psychе.
Jian Luo’s water-colored lips parted slightly, his hand lifting to rub his chin.
Had he not woken up properly today or were his ears not working well?
Shen Hua, someone who could very likely be their enemy, was their cousin? The joke seemed a bit too much.
“Shen Hua and Shen Yan are the sons of your grandmother’s cousin,” Grandpa Jian said, anticipating their reaction. He glanced at them and continued speaking.
“The mother of the Shen brothers passed away due to hemorrhage after a difficult childbirth. Before dying, she entrusted the care of her sons to your grandmother and me.”
“And their father?” Bai Jue asked.
At this, a pained expression flickered across Grandpa Jian’s face, “Their father died protecting their mother and your grandmother.”
Bai Jue was astonished, looking up at Jian Qing and Jian Luo to see shock in their eyes as well.
“Grandpa, did the Shen brothers choose to leave the Jian family because they knew about this?” Jian Luo recalled the melodramatic primetime TV drama he had seen a few days earlier, speculating along those lines.
Grandpa Jian shook his head softly, his gaze drifting out the window as if lost in memory, “That’s not the reason. Their mother and your grandmother were as close as sisters, and protecting your grandmother was a duty and a mission that their father was born with.”
The more they heard, the more confused Jian Qing and the others became.
Duty and mission?
The story seemed to grow more tangled the further it went.
Bai Jue, who always disliked heavy atmospheres, cracked a smile, trying to lighten the mood, “Well, Jian Luo, could it be that Grandma Jian had some impressive background?”
All he knew was that Grandpa Jian had built the formidable Jian Family from nothing, but he hadn’t heard much about Grandma Jian.
Mostly because, not long after Jian Qing and Jian Luo returned to the Jian Family, Grandma Jian had passed away. Out of concern for Grandpa Jian’s grief, they usually refrained from discussing her in his presence.
