Chapter 653: 639, Meeting Him at a Difficult Time (4)_1 Chapter 653: 639, Meeting Him at a Difficult Time (4)_1 On either side of the street, bare branches stood stark, dried yellow leaves barely hung onto the twigs.
The red light came up ahead, and the blue convertible stopped in its tracks.
Bai Jue rested one hand on the steering wheel, while clutching a cigarette in the other. He took a drag, and exhaled, smoke swirling from his slightly parted lips.
In the gentle winter sunlight, he smoked with a rakish, rebellious air.
Noticing the attention he was drawing of bystanders, especially from women, Bai Jue raised his eyelids and let a smile touch his lips.
At his grin, several of the women watching him nearly dropped what they were holding.
The red light changed, to green.
Bai Jue hit the gas, and the car sped off, leaving a trail of dust behind.
Unlike over at the circular highway in M Country, here Bai Jue had to adhere to traffic regulations and slow down.
His gaze casually swept over the surrounding streets; unexpectedly, his eyes landed on a figure not too far ahead, and his indifferent eyes darkened slightly.
It’s her!
Seeing the clumsy steps of the woman in the distance, he turned the steering wheel, driving towards the curb.
“My rotten luck!”
Zhan Mingyan squatted, fiddling with her broken high heel. Her pale little face was flushed red from the cold.
She sighed lightly, stood up, and limped over to the nearby tree.
She bent over to brush away the fallen leaves on the bench, before casually taking a seat.
Looking at the torn hem of her dress, she wore a sullen expression.
Just after the New Year, and her luck was already proving atrocious.
Her mom had tricked her into a blind date, she’d fled midway, torn her skirt, and now even broken her shoe.
What appalling luck!
Suddenly, a pair of men’s casual shoes strode into her view. She startled, then looked up along the man’s long legs.
The next second, a familiar face entered her sight, astonishing Zhan Mingyan.
“What are you doing here?”
She asked incredulously, a hint of joy in her voice.
With his hands in his pockets, Bai Jue looked down at her, his gaze swept over her torn dress and broken high heel, and the corner of his lips curved up slightly.
“Just walking around, saw someone looking like a discarded stray cat, so thought I’d come and see.”
“Who are you calling a stray cat?” Zhan Mingyan protested unhappily.
Why did she always encounter him when she was at her most discouraged?
“True, a cat wouldn’t be as hot-tempered as you.” Bai Jue teased.
“Get lost, I don’t want to talk to you.” Still remembering the words he’d said to her at the Qianshi Restaurant, she wanted nothing to do with him.
Bai Jue chuckled at her pouting demeanor, “Still holding a grudge about what I said last time?”
“Why not? Who asked you to paint me as that type of woman?” Zhan Mingyan retorted sarcastically.
“Why would someone like me, even bother talking to you?”
Bai Jue raised an eyebrow, holding back his laughter, “Alright, about last time. I was wrong, I apologize. I didn’t realize he was your dad.”
Zhan Mingyan turned away, still maintaining her cold expression.
“You can leave now if you have nothing else.”
“Zhan Mingyan, what did you get yourself into to end up in this state?” Bai Jue asked.
Noticing his gaze on her torn dress, Zhan Mingyan quickly pulled down the hem, covering up the tear.
“None of your business.”
“If it’s none of my business, I’ll take my leave then,” Bai Jue said gloomily.
After finishing, he made as if to walk away.
Zhan Mingyan sneaked glances at him, seeing he was really leaving, she bit her lip in resentment and annoyance.
Stupid Bai Jue, damn Bai Jue.
Not having any patience at all.
After only two steps, Bai Jue returned.
Zhan Mingyan raised her head to look at him, snorted lightly, “What are you back here for?”
Bai Jue pulled out a bracelet from his pocket and held it out to her, “I am returning this to you. It fell at the hospital entrance last time.”
Zhan Mingyan looked at the bracelet in his palm, and extended her hand to take it.
She asked cautiously, “You’ve been carrying it with you?”
“I brought it along when I went out today, initially planned to return it to you, didn’t expect to run into you here,” Bai Jue said.
Zhan Mingyan’s small hopeful bubble was burst by his offhand remarks. Her eyes dimmed, and she clutched the bracelet tighter.
“Thanks.”
“Do you need me to give you a ride?” Bai Jue asked.
Zhan Mingyan hesitated for a moment and then shook her head.
Bai Jue saw her discouragement, grabbed her and hoisted her up.
“Let’s go, consider this as my apology for hurting you with my words last time.”
“What are you doing?” His warm palm touching her skin caused Zhan Mingyan’s ears to turn red; she reacted by trying to wriggle free.
Bai Jue said, “I am taking you home. Are you planning to sit here wearing those shoes?”
“I…”
“Alright, let’s go.”
Not giving her a chance to retort, Bai Jue pulled her along and forcefully put her into the car.
“Buckle up.”
After Bai Jue shut the door, he circled the car to the other side to get in.
The last time at Dihao, she had been unconscious when he drove her home. This time, fully awake and sitting in his car, Zhan Mingyan felt her heart race.
She put on the seatbelt, and Bai Jue got into the car as well.
“Going home?” he asked.
Zhan Mingyan hesitated, then quietly said, “I’d prefer not to go home right now.”
“Then where would you like to go?” Bai Jue chuckled.
“Wherever.”
“…”
Typically, when a woman said ‘wherever’, it usually meant trouble for the man.
Bai Jue was no different.
“The airport, are you trying to mess with me?”
Zhan Mingyan glared at him again, “Then take me to the beach.”
“What for? You didn’t get dumped, did you? Planning to commit suicide by jumping into the sea?” Bai Jue showcased his razor-sharp tongue once again.
“Never mind, I don’t need you to take me,” Zhan Mingyan unbuckled her seatbelt, speaking irritably.
Bai Jue reached out and stopped her, “Fine, I’ll take you. Just sit tight.”
