Chapter 90: Chapter 88 Caesar’s Guess
"You said you encountered Che Berlin in the Nansha Great Forest?" Late that night, Caesar, leaning back in a chair in the hall, listened intently as Lai Li detailed her expedition but, of course, she mentioned nothing about the Holy Temple.
"Yes, Lu Hong and I were searching for Fina in the Nansha Great Forest when we found that Che Berlin had already grievously wounded the Vice Sect Hierarch, Lando."
"Did he recognize you?" Caesar asked.
Lai Li nodded, "It would have been hard not to recognize me—who else has the strength of a Third Transition but still looks like a young girl?"
"It’s fine if he recognized you, I’m just worried that he might find this place." Caesar seemed wary of this master of Black Tower.
Lai Li pouted, not pleased, "Father, we’re not afraid of him."
"What are you talking about? Of course, I’m not afraid of Che Berlin." Caesar, without elaborating, muttered, "Che Berlin should be staying put in the Beastman Empire. What’s he doing coming back now?"
"Yeah, Dad, I’m curious too. Che Berlin has been lurking in the Beastman Empire for at least fifty years. He must have returned for something important."
"No idea, no idea," Caesar shook his head, unwilling to waste too much thought on Che Berlin, for now there was no clue.
"Can’t you think about it properly? What matters in the Continent of God’s Grace could possibly escape your notice?" Lai Li cooed, genuinely curious and not merely out of lighthearted wonder.
"Hey, hey, hey, don’t talk to me in that tone. If you want to act coquettish, go upstairs to Lock Fan," Caesar truly couldn’t stand seeing his daughter acting like a delicate woman. He was a man who had survived bloody battles on the sands and couldn’t get used to it.
"Dad!" Lai Li’s face flushed as she retorted angrily, "Why do you bring him up!"
"What, I shouldn’t mention him? He’s been taking you out on dates, how can I not?"
"That’s just to avoid you," Lai Li replied with a red face.
"Hah!" Caesar scoffed, "I should just kill that boy and nip the problem in the bud!"
"Dad! Don’t joke about that!" Seeing the fleeting murderous intent in Caesar’s eyes, Lai Li instantly became flustered.
"Hmph!" Caesar turned away, sulking.
"Alright, let’s get back to the matter at hand. What’s the real reason Che Berlin returned?" Lai Li decided to steer the conversation back on track.
Of course, Caesar played along without dwelling on the previous issue, "What else could it be? He’s either looking for a successor or someone from the Lionheart royal family has infiltrated the empire. Every tower master of Black Tower had one mission: to assassinate the Lionheart royal family until they are extinct. There are only these two possibilities, otherwise who could command him?"
Although satisfied with her father’s explanation, Lai Li still pressed, "Couldn’t it be that the Eight Great Families have struck a deal with Che Berlin to assassinate Konstantin?"
"Unlikely. The tower master of Black Tower hardly ever returns to his country. How would the Eight Great Families know what would tempt Che Berlin? Even if they did have something that could tempt him, they wouldn’t even be able to contact him."
"Oh." Lai Li nodded, realizing she might have been overthinking it.
Having handled the previous issue, Lai Li pressed on, "What about the northern borders of the empire I mentioned to you before, do you have any idea who has locked them down?"
"Do you think I’m a fortune teller? Just telling me that the north has been completely sealed off, how am I supposed to guess?" Caesar glared at Lai Li, wondering when his daughter had become so thoughtless. Could it be... love?!
They say a woman in love is a fool! Indeed!
Thinking this, Caesar began harboring another grudge against Lock Fan.
"Dad! You must have some idea. Come on, tell me!" Lai Li employed her secret weapon once again—acting coquettish!
"Konstantin, Konstantin." Caesar could not resist his daughter’s manner and hastily revealed his inner suspicions.
"Konstantin?" Lai Li was startled, "Why would he want to block the news from the northern border?"
"If I were Konstantin, from the moment I entered hell from the eight academies of the empire, it was a setup. And it was a gamble of a setup, considering the current situation of the empire, I must say he is a ruthless man." As he discussed this speculation, Caesar shed his lazy demeanor and became serious.
"To lower the vigilance of the four academies under the influence of the Eight Great Families, he didn’t hesitate to use several other Civilian Academies as bait, even ready to sacrifice his own son mercilessly." Caesar started to analyze Konstantin’s planning: "The Eight Great Families place all their hopes on the academies they established, because that’s the greatest capital they have to survive in the Continent of God’s Grace. The incident of the hell rift not only wiped out the hope for the future of the Eight Great Families but also caused heavy losses to them. I also heard news that Lando had intervened and ambushed the allied forces of the Eight Great Families."
"Could it be that Konstantin is colluding with the Sect of Hell?!" Upon hearing Caesar’s explanation, she also figured it out: "Right, only Konstantin has the ability to block the news from the northern border, and he did it to coordinate with the actions of the Sect of Hell."
"You finally have a moment of intelligence," Caesar nodded in satisfaction and continued: "Moreover, this operation by hell was not just to annihilate the future hope of the Eight Great Families, but also conveniently to eliminate Feena, the princess of the Shahe family. However, it was unexpected that his son and the little princess of the Shahe family both survived, and were even rescued to Stone Moss City."
Lai Li thought of an inconsistency and asked Caesar, "But if it was a trap set by Konstantin, the empire shouldn’t suddenly fall into internal chaos."
"That’s what puzzles me too, everything was basically proceeding according to his plan, so why would the empire fall into chaos? Is it to make it easier for Ze Xiu to assassinate the queen?" Caesar shook his head, "No, that’s not right, the Eight Great Families’ chaos would always start from the south, it wouldn’t affect the north at all, the internal strife wouldn’t influence Ze Xiu’s assassination."
"Unless there was some unexpected change." Caesar guessed right; the original plan of Emperor Konstantin wasn’t supposed to let the Empire slip into chaos, and the foundation of the Eight Great Families in God’s Grace would have been swiftly cleaned up. But every plan has a flaw, and this flaw was the Demon Lord Archimonde.
The might of the Heavenly Gods is unimaginable to mortals. The Black Guards, nurtured by Emperor Konstantin for decades, lost more than 80% under the hands of Archimonde, thus missing the best opportunity to suppress the Eight Great Families, which led to the current chaotic situation in the empire.
"Forget it, forget it, the empire is already like this now, no matter how chaotic, it doesn’t matter." Caesar couldn’t fathom that the Demon Lord could be summoned to the Continent of God’s Grace, although it was just a fleeting glimpse, but enough to instill fear in people.
"True, since the Pluo family is strong enough. But I don’t understand why Konstantin hasn’t suppressed this rebellion by now and is letting it develop," Lai Li had many questions.
"It might be because of the lower planes. After all, the Eight Great Families still hold a lot of planes, and those are prime resources." Caesar’s speculation was spot on; the Pluo family appeared to be giving up on God’s Grace, but in doing so, they secured control over the planes held by the Eight Great Families.
Even though the Eight Great Families seem to have nearly conquered the southern part of the empire, victory in sight, their losses are extremely heavy, which is why there were no Third Transition powerhouses in the coalition attacking Stone Moss City; these powerhouses had already been redeployed into the plane wars.
"At the end of the day, the Pluo family holds the advantage, having the native status of the Continent of God’s Grace, which is akin to a passport valid across thousands of realms!" Caesar stood up and said to Lai Li, "Alright, you’ve asked enough questions for today, let’s stop here."
"I have one last question." At Caesar’s indication, Lai Li asked: "Since Konstantin is actually colluding with the Sect of Hell, shouldn’t we do something?"
"The Sect of Hell, huh," Caesar was actually annoyed by this religion; when he was in office, the Sect of Hell always caused problems. Whenever he went to war, this group would come out and sabotage, so Caesar and Lai Li both harbored quite a bit of hatred towards the Sect of Hell.
Lai Li’s reaction was the most direct; hearing from her father that the emperor of the Empire was colluding with the Sect of Hell, she wanted to take action to stop it, which is why she asked Caesar.
"Let him be. I believe Konstantin is not that kind, cooperating with the Sect of Hell is likely just a ploy to deceive them, he probably has a contingency plan to annihilate them." Now, Emperor Konstantin, elevated high above, would never know that at this moment, on this night, his life hung on someone else’s fleeting thought.
Caesar waved his hand and exited the hall.
After Caesar left, Lai Li blew out the candle and quietly headed towards the second floor.
"Xiaoxiao!" Caesar’s deep and chilly voice suddenly came from behind her: "Where are you going?"
"Uh, I’m going upstairs to clean up a bit," Lai Li scrambled for a lame excuse amidst her panic.
"Go to sleep!" Caesar rebuked impatiently, this was his daughter he’d raised for thousands of years? Running off to another man’s bed!
Of course, Caesar had misunderstood her. Lai Li had only agreed with Lock Fan to count the moon and watch stars that night.
"Oh!" Lai Li reluctantly responded, slowly walking into the side door under Caesar’s lethal glare and diving into her bedding.
"Hmph!" Caesar snorted coldly. He decided not to leave, and would sleep in the hall tonight to stand guard!
