Chapter 662: Chapter 149: Back to the Ancient Dreams (41)

The two forces converged and tallied the data from the chaotic battle.

The annihilated army had lost eight hundred and twenty-three men, killed nearly six thousand assassins, and captured over eight thousand.

The Beast Battle Hall suffered heavy losses among its experts like Shi Changxin, with their strength so diminished they had no capacity for immediate combat.

As for Shi Feiqing, only two Lionheart Dynasty warriors remained vigorous; Shi Feiqing himself, however, following a battle with Gui He, had his ribs completely broken, his body fractured in several places, and was nearly unable to move.

"We can’t return to the capital now," Shi Changxin said gravely. The battle at Donggang’s long slope was merely an appetizer for the enemy; the ambushes to follow would be even more fierce. With everyone’s combat strength nullified, they could not place all their hopes on just the two Lionheart Dynasty warriors.

"I also think we need to find a place to recover first," Shi Feiqing uttered woefully from inside the behemoth carriage—his face swollen, his speech wheezy and miserable.

He didn’t care about the number of enemies; but with his current state, entering the capital would likely mean losing face for life.

The two decision-makers quickly agreed, and so what followed was a determination of where to recuperate.

Outside the window the cold wind howled, and the July heat gradually subsided, replaced by bone-chilling cold.

Lacking the enhancement of Bloodthirst, Gui He, the weakest in strength within the carriage, couldn’t help but shiver.

In contrast, both Shi Changxin and Shi Feiqing furrowed their brows.

"This damned weather," Gui He parted the curtain to look outside; between them, July snow flew, the large flakes swirling down in bone-chilling coldness.

"Could the sudden snow signal some grievance?"

Shi Feiqing scoffed coldly, indicating no desire to engage with the idiot.

Shi Changxin, however, patiently explained, "This is not natural snowfall, but the workings of someone’s spell."

"Who? The Snowy Owl Clan?" Gui He’s first thought was of the Snowy Owl Clan that resided far to the north.

Shi Changxin shook his head. "Although they are adept in ice-based spells, they are incapable of forcibly changing the weather."

"It’s the Snow Clan," Shi Changxin continued, "Only the Snow Clan has the power to bring about such unnatural snowfall."

"The Snow Clan?!" Gui He was shocked, "You mean that spirit tribe created by the True Spirit Kefati?"

"Yes," Shi Changxin sighed, "I didn’t expect the Snow Clan to get involved. They are natural-born children of ice and snow, capable of easily altering the environment around them. What I don’t understand is how they managed to cross the defensive line of our beastmen’s northern lands and brazenly make their way into our territory."

"How else? It must be those traitors who made way for them. Perhaps the Snowy Owl Clan is involved, too – a bunch of cowards too scared to show their faces, who can do nothing but borrow the hands of others." Shi Feiqing complained bitterly. In his view, the beastmen would eventually submit to the rule of the Lionheart Dynasty, and any who dared oppose it were rebels and traitors.

"Enough talk, we can’t stay here any longer; we need to retreat from the direction you came from," Shi Changxin ordered decisively, no longer up for discussion.

Shi Feiqing didn’t object to the decision; they could only travel back the way they came to gain time to recuperate.

"Three thousand li east of Donggang, there’s a settlement of Pangolin clansmen, who are also under the Lionheart Dynasty. We can seek sanctuary there," Shi Feiqing detailed the route before closing his eyes, saying no more.

Shi Changxin nodded, stepped out of the carriage with Gui He, and issued the marching orders.

Under the protection of two Lionheart Dynasty warriors, they endured numerous days and numerous ambushes, both large and small, and finally arrived at the pangolin settlement described by Shi Feiqing.

But before they could get close, a piercing stench of blood reached their nostrils.

Gui He, who cultivated blood vitality, was extremely sensitive to blood and could sense the blood permeating the village – it was likely that not a single soul was left alive.

"Don’t go in," Gui He spoke, "The village has been slaughtered, and there may be an ambush inside."

"Damn it!" Shi Changxin’s face shifted, then he gave an urgent command, "Everyone retreat to the dense forest behind the village and light fires to keep warm!"

After days of continuous snowfall, the cold had accumulated to a terrifying degree, thick snow almost burying their shins, making further marching extremely difficult. Setting up a makeshift camp on the spot seemed a better option.

One of the Lionheart Dynasty warriors stepped forward and offered, "I’ll go check out the village."

"Then we’ll trouble the elder," Shi Changxin nodded. Whether or not there was an ambush inside still required investigation; after all, with their forces so close, they couldn’t afford a threatening hazard beside them.

But the Snow Clan’s methods were unpredictable, and Shi Changxin dared not settle in the extinct pangolin tribe’s area, so she reluctantly retreated and stationed herself in the forest backed by a mountain.

Having entered the forest, the shattered forces began to move, felling trees and erecting military tents.

Shi Changxin personally took action, marking out a large perimeter for the camp and, based on the wind’s direction, cleared ventilation paths before setting fire to a segregated section of woodland. The soaring flames gradually dispelled the chill on their bodies.

Gui He let out a long sigh of relief, "Finally, it’s a bit warmer."

Shi Changxin also nodded, "Indeed, I didn’t expect the Snow Clan to be involved as well."

Gui He fell silent. The fact that the Snow Clan dared to alter the weather on such a large scale signified one thing—that the higher echelons of the Beastmen had consented, wishing for the fall of the Lion Heart royal family.

Opportunities were limited. Once the Lionheart God emerged from seclusion, their chance would vanish. So even the Beastman Deities who hadn’t partaken in this affair turned a blind eye, allowing the situation to escalate.

Anyone with a bit of sense knew that there would be no support on the return to the royal capital. Although reaching the capital would end the conspiracy, the question remained: could they truly survive the journey back?

"Hurry and recover; the enemy should be arriving soon," whispered Gui He, his hand involuntarily trailing toward Shi Changxin’s golden hair.

A gust of cold wind swept by, snapping Gui He out of his trance. His hand paused, hesitating to fall.

Having waited for a long time without Gui He’s touch, Shi Changxin boldly pressed her head against him.

Witnessing Shi Changxin’s actions, Gui He let out a simple smile and then embraced her in his arms.

Shi Changxin made a symbolic struggle before naturally nestling against Gui He’s chest, reveling in this moment of peace.

Coincidentally, Shi Feiqing, assisted by his guards, stepped out of his carriage to stretch his legs, only to witness the scene before him. Correct content is on f|re(e)w eb.n\ovel.(c)o.m

"Young... Young Master, are... are they...?!"

"Shut up!"

Before the guard could finish speaking, Shi Feiqing rebuked him.

Taking a deep breath, Shi Feiqing smoothed out the confusion in his mind, repeatedly reminding himself that he was no match for the man called Gui He.

"Let’s go!" Shi Feiqing turned to go back to his carriage, questioning himself why he had emerged in the first place. Was he looking for trouble?

Sometime later, a thunderous roar emanated from the pangolin tribe, and the golden majesty of the lions resounded in the sky.

Another powerful member of the Lion Heart royal family, although anxious, chose not to move. He had to ensure the Young Master’s safety. What if this were a trap set by the enemy to lure the tiger away from the mountain?

Hearing the roar, Shi Changxin frowned and reluctantly left Gui He’s embrace, hurrying toward the village.

Gui He followed closely behind her, not leaving her side.

But before they reached the village, a Lion Heart royal family elder staggered out.

Gui He stepped forward to support the faltering Clan Elder, "Are you alright?"

"Damnable, damnable! They’ve actually resorted to poison! Besides the Earth Spirit and Snow Clans, they’ve solicited the Shadow Serpent Clan!"

Upon hearing the name of the Shadow Serpent Clan, the frown on Shi Changxin’s face nearly twisted into knots.

Gui He sighed as well. He had heard of this clan too—not of Beastmen, but of Demon Beast origin.

A mighty clan born from Demon Beasts, producing potent toxins within their bodies, the venom vexed even the Heavenly Gods, who were reluctant to encounter it.

In the past, the Lion Heart royal family expanded their domain, and the territory inhabited by the Shadow Serpents became a target. Due to the overwhelming strength of the Lionheart God, the Shadow Serpents were defeated and forced into Escape.

A grudge between the two clans had been formed a thousand years ago but still existed to this day. The Shadow Serpents now sought revenge for past grievances.

The Lion Heart Royal Family Elder had undoubtedly fallen into a trap set by the Shadow Serpents, the venom attacking his heart.

Fortunately, the bloodline power of the Lion Heart royal family was strong. The Shadow Serpent’s venom could be temporarily suppressed, not fatal, but this reduced their side’s combat power, particularly their most elite.

"Let’s return and prepare for battle!" Shi Changxin took a deep breath. In the depths of her soul, she felt the impending crisis drawing near!
