Chapter 303: Chapter 58: Nonsensical Harassment
To tell the truth, Lu Hong had never been as tired as he was these past two days. After taking on the tasks in the morning, it took a whole day of sheer exhaustion just to barely complete them.
Although they weren’t particularly difficult tasks, they weren’t easy either, such as finding cats, finding dogs, eliminating wild boar monsters in the east of the city, collecting a basket of magic vines and wild grass in the west, and looking for people, catching johns, catching gamblers, catching drinkers, catching meat eaters, catching... catching...
"I ain’t catching anymore!" Lu Hong slammed down his mallet furiously. After a day of odd jobs, the village in front of him was the last task. As long as he got rid of the field mice, he could finally call it a day. Once he advanced to silver, the reward for the tasks would at least triple, going from a dozen copper coins to a silver coin, and with some luck, he might even come across a big task worth ten silver coins.
Without doing tasks and earning money, he couldn’t leave this plane of existence. Lu Hong picked up his large mallet again, took a deep breath, and walked resolutely towards the village in the twilight.
All of a sudden, two young girls burst out from behind a large tree.
"Hey!" Xiao Hui shouted, "Is it you! Is it you!"
Lu Hong rolled his eyes, "What do you two want?"
"Spit it out! Is it you!" Her companion demanded as well, "Is it you who took all the bronze tasks from the guild?"
Lu Hong relaxed. He thought it was something serious.
"Yeah, so what? Are you from some powerful family? Is it against the law to do tasks properly?" Since it wasn’t someone seeking revenge for a task, Lu Hong naturally had nothing to fear. As long as he could control the situation, it wouldn’t make any big stir.
Currently, Lu Hong was in the stronghold of the Eagle Alliance, and it was best not to cause trouble. If his identity was exposed, he would be a dead man for sure.
"Wow, you’ve got some nerve!" Xiao Hui fumed, "Do you know how much you’ve delayed us because of you?!"
"Heh," Lu Hong scoffed, "What? You can’t delay missions nowadays? It seems there usually aren’t many people taking them, right?"
"You!" Xiao Hui, not particularly articulate and more of a practical fighter, immediately took out her magic wand to cast a skill in anger, "Holy Light! Heal!"
A bright white light shot out and struck Lu Hong, whose body was warmly bathed in Holy Light, sweeping away his fatigue.
"Eat another one of my attacks!" Her companion also summoned a shimmering Holy Light and smashed it down at Lu Hong.
No need for defense, damn! Did these two girls have a screw loose? Battling with healing skills? Total nutjobs!
"Why didn’t it work?" Xiao Hui was astonished. Why didn’t he fall down at their command?
Her companion said gravely, "Try harder, he won’t be able to hold out!"
"Okay!" Xiao Hui agreed, and they both desperately poured their magic power into it, making the Holy Light bloom in front of the village, drawing the villagers out to watch.
A quarter of an hour passed, and the girls’ magic power ran out, fading the Holy Light.
"Eh?" Lu Hong smiled, "Why don’t you continue?"
"You... you... huff... huff..." Xiao Hui swallowed her saliva, "How can you be fine?"
"Are you an idiot? Have you ever seen someone fight with healing skills?"
"No, can’t you?" Xiao Hui’s companion was taken aback, "It used to work before."
Well, these were just two girls spoiled by their families.
"Forget it. Go back to where you came from," Lu Hong waved his hand, "I won’t hold you up from my work, but I still have to thank you for driving away my fatigue."
"Don’t go!" Seeing Lu Hong about to leave, Xiao Hui quickly blocked him, "You must give us an explanation."
"I have to explain to you?" Lu Hong was bemused, "Where did these lunatics come from? Please step aside. I don’t even know you, okay?"
"No! There is, there is!" Xiao Hui’s companion also rushed forward, "You caused us to be three days late to meet Baron Yi Tian, do you know how much you’ve hurt us!"
"What Baloney Baron, I’ve never heard of some baron that requires completing tasks to meet; scamper off!" No matter how pretty a girl was, once she became a nuisance, it was sickening.
The two women, drained of magic power, were sent flying far off by a smack from Lu Hong’s mallet.
"You’re done for! Once I see Baron Yi Tian, I’ll make sure he beats you up good!" Xiao Hui clenched her fists and said viciously.
"What?" Lu Hong was taken aback. Am I really in the Eagle Alliance? How does every girl know my title?
"Hmph, hmph!" Xiao Hui snorted proudly. Her idol really came through; as soon as she mentioned him, she intimidated this arrogant man: "Scared now, huh?"
"Scared, scared." Lu Hong waved his hand dismissively, "I hope you find your idol soon." Having said that, Lu Hong strode up to the farm owner and produced a yellow paper: "You posted this task, didn’t you? I’ve come to help solve the problem."
"Good, good, please come in, sir. You’ve really saved us." The farm owner called a worker to lead Lu Hong off to eliminate the monsters, while he himself hurried toward Xiao Hui with tiny steps. This girl looked somewhat familiar!
Drawing closer and taking a good look, oh my goodness! This is bad, this is really bad; it’s the precious daughter of the Duke Bacon—this could be deadly!
"Miss Hui, what brings you here?" The farm owner quickly gave a bow.
Pretending to cough, Xiao Hui then said, "There’s no need for that, I was... I was just out for some fun."
"Maybe Miss Hui is tired? Would you like to come and sit at my farm?" The farm owner extended the invitation warmly.
"No, we still have to..." Xiao Hui didn’t manage to finish her sentence before being interrupted by her friend.
Her friend whispered in her ear, "That bad guy is inside, if we don’t let out this frustration, how will we sleep tonight!"
Right, Xiao Hui thought, her friend was indeed her top strategist, with quite the head on her shoulders.
Deciding, Xiao Hui turned to the farm owner: "Well then, let’s go inside and take a look."
"Yes, yes, please come this way," he replied promptly.
Lu Hong followed the farm worker deep into the agricultural part of the farm, through the building area and out to the vast croplands.
"Adventurer sir, this is our crop area. Three days ago, a big crowd of Demon Beasts appeared from nowhere, wreaking havoc all over the farm. We resisted fiercely just to get a moment’s peace. If you hadn’t come today, I fear we wouldn’t know how many crops would be destroyed tonight."
"Don’t worry, now that I’m here, I’ll take care of it thoroughly." Lu Hong hoisted his club and plunged alone into the fields.
It was odd, by all accounts, Demon Beasts shouldn’t appear within ten miles of the city; regardless of the local customs, to protect the residents inside, surrounding beasts should be cleared. Of course, the brown bear outside Raoxue City was an exception because Qing Ling couldn’t handle it.
In the past couple of days, Lu Hong had undertaken tasks which included large groups of low-level Demon Beasts appearing at all four city gates. Although the damage they caused wasn’t significant, the situation was very strange; Demon Beasts should stay in their own territories, so why were they wandering into human lands?
It was just a passing thought, as Lu Hong couldn’t be bothered with Eagle Alliance’s matters. Today, all he wanted was to kill off this batch of damn mice and then call it a day and go to sleep.
The specifics aren’t worth mentioning; against third-level trashy Demon Beasts like rotten sweet potatoes and stinky bird eggs, they didn’t stand a chance against Lu Hong.
Within an hour, Lu Hong had scoured the fields and killed nearly a hundred ground mice hiding among the crops.
Dragging the corpses of these Demon Beasts, Lu Hong dumped them at the entrance of the building area en masse, startling the worker nearly out of his wits; he had never seen so many Demon Beasts before.
"Wow, you’re amazing!" the worker found his bearings and quickly handed Lu Hong a towel, "Here, wipe your sweat, come rest in our living room."
"Sure." Lu Hong smiled, "I heard before coming that your farm produces high-quality milk, can I try some?"
"Of course, you can. You’ve helped us out so much, our boss will definitely take good care of you." The worker chuckled and led Lu Hong into the hall.
Just then, Xiao Hui and her friend were being entertained by the farm owner in the hall.
"It’s you?!" Seeing Lu Hong enter, Xiao Hui lost her cool, stood up, and pointed at him: "You dare to come and see us?!"
"Hehe, what I do is none of your business," Lu Hong glanced at the young girl.
"Uncle Chen, have him arrested for me!" Xiao Hui burst out angrily.
Just as the farm owner was about to order the workers to proceed and curry favor with the daughter of the Duke Bacon family, the worker who had led Lu Hong interjected quickly into the farm owner’s ear: "Boss, this adventurer wiped out three hundred Demon Beasts single-handedly in just a short while, we... we’re no match for him, sir."
"What?" The farm owner was stunned, feeling a chill run down his spine, relieved that he had been slow to speak, or else he’d have really gotten into big trouble.
One should know that a free and solitary adventurer was what most small business owners feared the most, as the saying goes, bare feet are not afraid of those with shoes—his estate could not stand the meddling of these headless flies.
"Uncle Chen, why haven’t you done anything yet?" Xiao Hui, seeing that the farm owner hadn’t moved for a long time, was quite dissatisfied.
"I... I...," stuck between a rock and a hard place, the farm owner was in a dilemma: "You two may have a misunderstanding?"
