Chapter 297: Chapter 52 Demon Beast Besieges the City
For seven days, Lu Hong had methodically completed his duties as a servant at Raoxue Castle, just as the maiden had said. After the sealing of the two level-ten Demon Beasts, the Demon Beasts within a hundred mile radius were stirred.
Not to mention, the higher the level of the Demon Beast, the greater the benefits its flesh had for the advancement of other Demon Beasts. Considering these were level-ten beasts, to other Demon Beasts, it was as if a delicious feast had been presented before them, danger notwithstanding.
The arrival of large Demon Beasts threw the entire Raoxue City into panic. Everyone knew that the Raoxue Queen was injured, and without the queen’s protection, for the Demon Beasts, Raoxue City was like a sumptuous feast.
Fortunately, the Alchemist Dai Tianwei took over the queen’s duties. With his Second-Transformation Peak combat power and numerous magic tools mastered through his secondary profession, he still had some leeway in dealing with the Demon Beasts.
"Sir," Kaif greeted Dai Tianwei tremblingly.
Leaning on the battlements, Dai Tianwei stood over the spoils of war taken from dead Demon Beasts. Turning to Kaif with a smile, he asked, "What does the City Lord wish to instruct?"
"Ah," Kaif glanced around, making sure no one else was nearby before he continued, "Lord Dai, everything has proceeded according to your plan. When will we truly break free from Qing Ling’s control and take charge of our own destiny?"
"DId the potion you released go as planned?"
"Reporting to you, sir, there were no errors."
Calculating, Dai Tianwei then placed an arm around Kaif’s shoulder and congratulated, "Then it’ll be soon. Once the drug accumulates to the threshold, it will erupt within Qing Ling’s body, draining her of magic power within three days. That will be your chance to turn the tables and take control of Raoxue City and own the countless treasures within Raoxue Castle."
It must be said, Dai Tianwei offered Kaif an enormous metaphorical "pie in the sky." Even a slice would make Kaif sleep with a smile, but in reality, Dai Tianwei knew all too well that there was nothing inside Raoxue Castle—it was just a dilapidated castle.
Kaif indulged in his beautiful fantasies about the future, continuing to confirm, "Then, about the buying price you mentioned..."
"Don’t worry, it will not be lower," Dai Tianwei smiled. "Although Raoxue does not produce materials, the quality of its Demon Beasts is very high. An ordinary level-four Demon Core is worth half a Gold Coin, but from Raoxue, it can fetch the price of two whole Gold Coins in the market, even more."
"Good, good, good!" Seeing that Dai Tianwei hadn’t forgotten the benefits he promised, Kaif laughed from ear to ear. Meanwhile, his resentment towards the young girl deepened, knowing a level-four Demon Core could actually sell for four times its current price, while Raoxue Castle exploited them under monopoly, squeezing out their hard-earned life savings. How detestable!
"Alright," Dai Tianwei clapped off the dust from his clothes due to the intense fighting, saying, "It’s getting late. Plant the Beast-Repelling Stake I gave you into the ground, it will ensure peace throughout the night."
"Yes, I respectfully see you off, Lord Dai!" Kaif knelt, his demeanor utterly devout.
The Beast-Repelling Stake was the latest magical invention of Mr. Dai Tianwei’s teacher, named appropriately for its function. It was specifically designed to drive away Demon Beasts and had proven effective through extensive field testing. However, this time was different; the lingering allure for the Demon Beasts wasn’t just the bait at the gate, but also the two level-ten Demon Beasts.
Under the influence of the Beast-Repelling Stake, numerous Demon Beasts lingered outside Raoxue City. The night concealed their movements, but when the residents who climbed the battlements the next morning to observe shriked in fear.
Kaila rushed over and scolded the citizen, "What’s happened? Such a big fuss over nothing!"
"Young... Young City Lord... Look..."
Following the direction pointed by the citizen, Kaila saw thousands of Demon Beasts blocked outside by the Beast-Repelling Stake, and her scalp numbed. Trying to remain composed: "What’s there to panic about? Immediately report the situation to my father and let him decide!"
"Yes, yes." The citizen scrambled down from the battlements and headed straight to Kaif’s courtyard.
Receiving the news, Kaif did not dare to delay and hurried to report to Dai Tianwei.
"How could this be possible?" Dai Tianwei clearly didn’t believe it; the Beast-Repelling Stake worked just like incense that produced an odor detested by Demon Beasts, pushing them to leave. Raoxue’s Demon Beasts were too ordinary, with no unique lineage, and shouldn’t be unaffected.
When Dai Tianwei reached the top of the battlement, he couldn’t help but take a deep breath. Groups of level-eight and level-nine Demon Beasts were camped outside the defense line of the Beast-Repelling Stake. What was more horrifying was that the magic runes activated inside the stake were nearly burnt out, meaning that within an hour, the Demon Beasts would cross the blockade and charge at Raoxue City.
At that moment, Dai Tianwei felt overwhelmed. If they came one at a time, perhaps he could handle them; but facing this situation, what was to be done? The residents of Raoxue City had low job levels and were utterly useless. Escape? Where to escape? With Demon Beasts encircling the city, there was no retreat but to fight.
After a moment of contemplation, Dai Tianwei said in a firm voice, "There is less than an hour left, we must ask the Raoxue Queen to intervene to resolve the current crisis!"
Dai Tianwei’s words went unanswered, and he couldn’t bother with how the residents felt. After all, he, Dai Tianwei, was not ready to die. He still wanted to shine in the alliance and become a prominent figure. How could he die in such a suffocating place?
Having said that, Dai Tianwei jumped down from the city walls and rushed towards Raoxue Castle.
It was the same study, the same young queen, but this time, Dai Tianwei didn’t feel like beating around the bush. "A large number of level eight and nine demon beasts have encamped outside the city. I can’t handle them. I request the queen to step in and maintain peace."
The young girl, Qing Ling, was slightly surprised. It shouldn’t be like this; the demon beasts were supposed to come one by one, and Dai Tianwei should have been able to handle them. Why had this situation arisen?
"I haven’t recovered yet," the young girl said gravely. "Although I might resolve the current issue, forcefully intervening now means I won’t be able to activate any magic power for the next year. If we get through this crisis, how will Raoxue survive in the future?"
"I’ll take the stand for you. Once this incident is over, I will write to the teacher and ask him to station troops here until the queen fully recovers." After all, the Raoxue queen is an important figure of the Holy Court Tribunal; one must make a show of such tasks.
"Alright," Qing Ling nodded satisfactorily. "Then let’s draw up a document."
"This ..." Dai Tianwei hesitated when it came to drawing up the agreement. He had come all the way to Raoxue to acquire the finest Linglong Jade as a birthday gift for his teacher. This task hadn’t been successful yet, and it would be troubling to involve his teacher. Anyway, Dai Tianwei was unwilling.
"Miss!" Just then, the old butler hurriedly entered through the door. "A large number of demon beasts have encamped outside Raoxue City, and their temperaments are growing increasingly volatile. They might attack the city gates at any moment."
"It must be that the beast-driving stakes are about to fail," Dai Tianwei frowned deeply. "Please have mercy, Queen."
Taking a deep breath, Qing Ling stood up. "As the Queen of Raoxue, burdened with great responsibilities, so be it." Having said that, the floor-to-ceiling windows of the study automatically opened, and the young girl swiftly flew out.
From above the city walls, Qing Ling looked down at nearly a thousand restless demon beasts, her eyes downturned. Truthfully, she didn’t want to, but felt compelled to act. Internal troubles were growing. Dai Tianwei’s intentions were malicious, and any slight mishap could cause the Raoxue family lineage to end with her.
Watching as the runes engraved on the beast-driving stakes gradually dimmed until they vanished,
Qing Ling finally made up her mind between familial legacy and royal duty. As the ice crystal in her hand glowed with dazzling brilliance, a storm of snow and wind howled into existence, enveloping the demon beasts like a heavenly curtain.
Meanwhile, Dai Tianwei stood on the balcony of Raoxue Castle, a smile forming on his lips.
Lu Hong stepped onto the balcony and said, "Mr. Dai is indeed very strategic." After observing for over a week, Lu Hong had also begun to notice some clues.
"It’s just good luck," Dai Tianwei laughed. "Brother Lu is also very smart. I have high hopes for you." Any astute person could understand intentions and avoid meeting the old butler.
Lu Hong smiled slightly. "May I know what Mr. Dai needs from me?"
"I hope you can mix this potion into tonight’s beverages," Dai Tianwei said as he produced a bottle of emerald-green liquid.
Lu Hong took the bottle, opened it, and sniffed. The pungent odor was somewhat corrosive. "This isn’t for healing wounds, right?"
"Of course, it’s intended to poison Qing Ling," Dai Tianwei admitted bluntly. "Originally, my plan was set for next month, but this unexplained siege by the demon beasts gives me the perfect opportunity. It’s as if fate itself wants me to accomplish my mission sooner."
"So, you intend to destroy the Raoxue family?"
Dai Tianwei shrugged. "I don’t want to do this, but it’s just too difficult to get her to hand over the Linglong Jade. I have no choice but to resort to this."
"If I could retrieve the Linglong Jade for you, would you spare the Raoxue family?" Lu Hong asked quietly.
Dai Tianwei turned to face Lu Hong squarely. "You? Don’t you want to be the master of Raoxue Castle?"
"I suppose... I would," Lu Hong nodded. "It is quite a big place after all!"
"Hahaha!" Dai Tianwei laughed heartily. "Then do as I say, and by the end of tonight, you will be the master here!"
"Alright!"
