Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Results Matter_1
More people trickled in, and at half-past two, a tall, thin teacher entered the room. After an opening speech, he said, "For tomorrow’s class, we will practice in the training room. We will now start with the theoretical knowledge of Phantom Power. Since you’ve all made it into this class, it means your Phantom Power has already reached the Phantom Master level. You should all have some understanding of Phantom Power. In your Dantian, there’s a milky substance—that’s the Phantom Power Source. It stores the Phantom Power that you absorb. Only those with a Phantom Power Source can train to become Phantom Masters. However, everyone’s Phantom Power Source is different; some are as big as a thumb, others might only be the size of a grain of rice. The larger the Phantom Power Source, the faster your training speed will be..."
The two-hour class ended quickly, and the teacher left as soon as he had dismissed the class. Dugu Qianye and her classmates were also preparing to leave. She was still pondering the content of the lecture when her path was blocked.
"Are you Baili Xie?" the person blocking the way asked.
"What’s the matter?" Dugu Qianye raised her head to get a clear view of the newcomer.
"Nothing much, we just heard you joined our class without an assessment, and everyone is curious to see just how formidable you are. We would like to spar with you," the leader said.
"What do you want, just say it," Dugu Qianye responded coldly.
"Let’s go to the Arena for a match. If you win, we’ll acknowledge your place in our class; if you lose, please leave," the leader stated.
Dugu Qianye looked around and noticed that nearly all the students from class 1A were there, indicating that many had issues with her direct admission.
"Fine," Dugu Qianye nodded. Although she was indifferent to others’ recognition, she did not want to be constantly harassed for this reason. And the most direct way to stop the harassment was to let her strength speak for itself.
News of a freshman from class 1A heading for a duel in the Arena spread quickly throughout the academy. Everyone wanted to see who was so audacious to step into the Arena on the first day of school, so by the time Dugu Qianye and her group arrived, the Arena was already surrounded by many people.
In the middle of the Arena was a dueling platform a hundred meters long, surrounded every ten meters by fifty-centimeter-tall pillars with intricate patterns etched on them and glowing gems embedded at the top. The stands around it could seat ten thousand people.
Dugu Qianye slowly walked up to the Dueling Platform, where the leading young man was already waiting.
"Just you? I thought you’d all be coming at me," Dugu Qianye said.
"Arrogant! See if you can beat me first!" the leader retorted and summoned his Phantom Beast, a level 1 Holy Beast, the Sword Badger. Phantom Beasts were also a form of strength, and summoning them was not against the rules during a duel.
"Call out your Phantom Beast as well," he said.
"No need," Dugu Qianye replied. Then she concentrated Phantom Power in her hands and launched an attack at him. While he was defending, she activated the Ethereal Step Technique to get around his Phantom Beast, drew a dagger, and before the opponent and the crowd could react, she was in front of him, the blade against his throat.
"You’ve lost," she declared. It wasn’t until she lowered the dagger that the man regained his senses. She turned to the students of class 1A below and said, "All of you, come at once. I’ll settle this in one go."
Dugu Qianye’s words not only brought everyone back to their senses but also infuriated the students of class 1A. They had all been considered prodigies in their own families—when had they ever been looked down upon like this? Except for Sun Kui and Gao Liang, the remaining 21 students all climbed onto the platform, standing next to the leader.
"Since you’ve won, we acknowledge you in our class. But since you’ve asked for this yourself, don’t say we’re bullying you by outnumbering you. Even if you lose, we won’t drive you out," a girl stepping forward said to Dugu Qianye.
Dugu Qianye nodded and said, "Come on." She then launched Phantom Power attacks while using the Ethereal Step Technique to dodge their assaults. She moved quickly among them, knocking down opponents with a single palm strike. In less than a minute, everyone was down on the ground.
"You didn’t just use Phantom Power?!" the leader from before exclaimed.
"We care about the outcome, not the process. As long as I win, that’s what counts," Dugu Qianye stated.
After hearing her words, everyone seemed to have an epiphany.
"Do you want to continue?" Dugu Qianye asked.
"Yes. Everyone, summon your Phantom Beasts." The leader stood up and said. The others called forth their Phantom Beasts one after another, and the Dueling Platform was soon crowded with various Phantom Beasts, ranking from high-star Spiritual Beasts to high-star Holy Beasts.
"Wow," the audience got excited, this person took down 22 people in a second, and now with the Phantom Beasts added!
"Damn, isn’t this bullying my brother?" Dan Jingtian and others who had arrived later saw so many Phantom Beasts, shouted loudly, and were about to jump onto the platform to help Dugu Qianye.
"You can’t just barge in during a duel. Look, she isn’t even panicking." Long Xiang timely held back Dan Jingtian.
With everyone pulling him back like that, Dan Jingtian calmed down and started watching from below with the others.
"Are we comparing Phantom Beasts now?" Dugu Qianye asked.
"You said it, you want a result," the man said. The others were also looking at her, waiting for her to admit defeat.
"Heh, you learn quite fast." Dugu Qianye chuckled. "But me, admitting defeat? Impossible. Well then, Xiaoyin, come on out."
As Dugu Qianye’s words fell, Xiaoyin appeared on the platform. "Awoo!" As the Divine Beast appeared, the other Phantom Beasts lay prostrate on the ground.
The audience were stunned, cursing as they said, "Damn, is this a newcomer? Not only did she defeat an entire class by herself, but she even has a Divine Beast!"
"So, do I win?" Dugu Qianye asked.
Xiaohuo muttered from within Dugu Qianye’s sleeve: Even though I’m on the outside, why call that little dog out!
"You, you won." The other side was still reeling from the impact of the Divine Beast; Dugu Qianye had already left the Dueling Platform with Xiaoyin.
"Brother, over here!" Seeing Dugu Qianye come down, Dan Jingtian waved and shouted at her.
Dugu Qianye walked over with Sun Kui and another, and Dan Jingtian hugged Dugu Qianye’s shoulder, saying, "Bro, not bad! Daring to go on the Dueling Platform on the first day and challenging more than twenty people by yourself! Damn, you actually have a Divine Beast!"
Dugu Qianye just smiled and said nothing. Those in the stands who were paying attention to Dugu Qianye saw Dan Jingtian and the others and were shocked again: Crap, this kid is actually close with the top ten geniuses!
Dugu Qianye, who had only been famous among the freshmen, would probably become known throughout the whole school by tomorrow.
"Let’s head back," Dugu Qianye said, leading the way out. She truly didn’t enjoy those burning gazes.
Inside the principal’s office, Xie Fan withdrew his gaze from the Arena and, looking at the old man, said, "So this is the kid you took a fancy to that day? He’s quite good, just a bit too cocky for his age!"
The old man said proudly, "A young man should be a bit arrogant; you don’t understand that!"
A sharp rebuke accompanied by a cup lid flying at him: "Crap, you old fart, are you calling me old?"
