Chapter 46: Chapter 46 Clean and Neat Ambush_1

"Master Yan Xing!" Duan’er excitedly rubbed his hands together and asked, "Do you mean... I can exchange the agarwood from the Red Mud Wetland for weapons from you? Then I can arm my Werewolf Warriors with these weapons to attack other werewolf territories, annex their land, and seize their werewolf warriors. And then use the agarwood from their territories to continue exchanging for weapons from you, arming the new additions to my army. Thus, continually expanding outwards!"

Yan Xing’s eyes widened as he watched the animated Duan’er. After he finished, Yan Xing asked, "Clan Leader... Thunderous Swamp is so vast; even its peripheral areas aren’t small. If you keep trying to take it mouthful by mouthful like this, how long will it take? Moreover, since we are all werewolves, why must we slaughter each other?"

Yan Xing’s words pulled Duan’er back from his fantasy. Puzzled, he responded, "Master Yan Xing, isn’t that what you just meant? Didn’t you tell me to expand my territory?"

Yan Xing said, "I did tell you to expand your territory, and I even intend to help you unify the Werewolf Tribe groups in the periphery of Thunderous Swamp. However, I never told you to wage endless wars. If you keep biting off more than you can chew, taking ages to digest each piece... you won’t assimilate many tribes before the other Werewolf Tribes become wary. Given the complex terrain of the swamp, even if I gave your warriors the same full set of equipment as the Eternal Domain warriors, it wouldn’t be so easy to capture other werewolf territories."

Duan’er finally calmed down.

Yes, the swamp terrain is far too complex. It’s full of invisible natural traps; even the local werewolves don’t dare to move recklessly, let alone an attacking force operating in unfamiliar territory.

If caught in a quagmire, a full suit of steel armor would only hasten your death.

"But... how do we expand our territory without going to war?" Duan’er couldn’t think of another method.

Yan Xing replied with a smile, "With this agarwood, we can make them offer up their territories willingly. If you trust me in this matter, just follow my lead."

Though he had known Yan Xing for less than a day, Duan’er already admired him enormously. Now that Yan Xing had painted another grand vision for him, Duan’er quickly said, "I will listen to Master Yan Xing; I will follow everything you say."

However, Yan Xing himself had only just formed a rough outline of his plan and did not divulge too much to Duan’er.

Just then, Olaf relayed intelligence through the walkie-talkie. The invading werewolves from Stenchwater Forest had already subdued the werewolves remaining in the Red Mud Wetland. Ten werewolves were scouting towards the prairie, and another twenty were heading towards Arborwood.

Yan Xing immediately said to Duan’er, "Twenty werewolves from Stenchwater Forest are coming. Prepare for an ambush; don’t let any of them escape."

Duan’er replied, "Please rest assured, Master Yan Xing. Once they enter Arborwood, not one will escape."

Duan’er slid down the tree he was in and climbed into his own tree for the ambush. A few LOW HOWLS echoed through the woods, and then the surroundings fell silent again.

The croaking of frogs resumed.

The phosphorescent surface of the water illuminated the forest, making it look like a fairyland from an animated film.

Arborwood was not far from the Duan’er Tribe’s home. Soon, a rustling noise came from outside the woods as a werewolf pack moved through the undergrowth into Arborwood. As they walked, they let out LOW HOWLS, calling to their comrades who were gathering agarwood there, but they received no response.

This lack of response didn’t alert the werewolves; after all, no one expected Duan’er to return so swiftly.

Perhaps their comrades were currently underwater, searching for valuable logs.

The werewolves, receiving no answer, continued deeper into the woods. They soon found a pile of logs—the kind that could be exchanged for food—scattered on a flat patch of ground. The werewolves approached, still unaware that they had walked into an ambush.

Yan Xing stood right above these werewolves, his figure hidden by the dense canopy of leaves, the fragrance of the agarwood powder helping him blend naturally into the environment.

The ambushers were hidden nearby: in the tree branches, within the undergrowth, and some were even submerged in the water, breathing only through their nostrils concealed beneath lily pads. The Stenchwater Forest werewolves came within two meters of them, yet remained completely oblivious.

This once again impressed upon Yan Xing how difficult it was for outside groups to attack the swamp; it was all too easy to fall into an ambush.

Yan Xing gently tapped the walkie-talkie a few times. Hearing the signal, the Steel Armored Werewolves and militiamen slowly drew their slingshots, each placing a marble into the leather pouch.

The elastic was pulled taut...

Yan Xing shouted, "Fire!"

A hail of marbles shot towards the nearby werewolves. Facing the invaders, the Red Mud Wetland werewolves showed no mercy, aiming all their marbles at the enemy’s heads.

The sudden barrage stunned the encircled werewolves. A few dropped directly to the ground, blood spurting from their heads. Before the Stenchwater Forest werewolves could even comprehend what was happening, a second volley struck their heads.

Then came the ominous BUZZ of rapidly approaching Poison Flies.

The Stenchwater Forest werewolves scrambled about, clutching their heads, and the approach of the Poison Flies threw them into an even greater panic. There was limited dry land in Arborwood. Some werewolves stumbled into pools of water, while others were stung by Poison Flies and collapsed.

The ambushing Red Mud Wetland werewolves and militiamen seized the opportunity, charging out from their hiding places.

Flails swung, smashing bones. Spears thrust, piercing flesh. The massacre began and ended swiftly; Arborwood quickly returned to silence. The ground and water were littered with the corpses of the Stenchwater Forest werewolves, their blood staining large patches of water red.

While Duan’er led the werewolves to clean up the battlefield, Yan Xing reviewed the rewards from the battle.

His level had risen to 9, and his strength had increased slightly. Theoretically, Yan Xing could now take on several werewolves single-handedly with a steel pipe.

But attribute scores and actual combat were two different things.

What Yan Xing lacked was combat experience and the bloodthirsty ferocity werewolves displayed in battle.

In this battle, even the militiamen had performed better than Yan Xing; they thrust their spears at the werewolves without batting an eye.

As for Yan Xing, he had remained in the tree from start to finish... just shooting.

A gentleman doesn’t stand beneath a collapsing wall.

Protecting oneself is the key to enjoying life.

Thus, Yan Xing, feeling perfectly justified, remained in the tree and took out the blueprint he had been awarded.

It was a Wolf Den construction blueprint with no placement restrictions. This meant Yan Xing could build a Wolf Den anywhere he wished.

The Wolf Den was a First Order recruitment building for the Swamp Tribe. Every week, a new batch of First Order werewolves would be available for recruitment there.

What a fantastic item!

Having interacted with the werewolves for several days, Yan Xing was increasingly convinced that they were truly excellent warriors. Their astonishing speed and agility, coupled with their natural stamina and resistance to hunger, made them ideal for long-distance raiding tactics. Moreover, they were First Order creatures: cheap to recruit, available in large numbers, and yet their combat strength was comparable to that of Second Order human militiamen. When armed, their combat prowess could even surpass that of Second Order units.

Olaf had mentioned that the Eternal Domain’s First Order Steel Armored Werewolves could even contend with Third Order Lizardmen from the swamp.

Holding the Wolf Den blueprint and looking at the agarwood on the ground, Yan Xing already had a new plan forming in his mind for arming the werewolves.
