Mercenary’s War
Chapter 978 - 978 963 Double Backup

978: Chapter 963: Double Backup 978: Chapter 963: Double Backup Gao Yang and Yelena were on a plane, their destination was Portland.

After staying in New York for a few days and spending all of it with the Glolov family, Gao Yang felt like he was living at his father-in-law’s place.

Gao Yang didn’t want to disrupt the Glolov family reunion, but his interactions with Glolov and Yelena always seemed a bit odd.

After four days, therefore, Gao Yang finally decided to move to the ranch Morgan had given him.

Strictly speaking, he had no home, and the ranch Morgan gifted him held special significance for both him and Yelena, so Gao Yang wanted to spend the next few days there with Yelena.

But before heading to the ranch, Gao Yang needed to meet Jack first.

Gao Yang had sent the two guns he wanted to collect to Jack, so when he went to get the custom gun he needed from Jack, he could also take the collected guns to the ranch.

Yelena knew what had happened and understood what her father and Gao Yang were about to do, so she had looked quite downcast these days.

However, she would always greet Gao Yang with a smile whenever in front of him.

Only Yelena’s smile was too fake, too forced.

It pained Gao Yang to see it, and he felt helpless.

He was full of remorse towards Yelena, but he could not possibly abandon his revenge for Bruce, so he opted to play dumb and pretended Yelena was always in a good mood.

After the plane landed, Gao Yang and Yelena didn’t head straight to Jack’s studio; instead, they went directly to a car dealership.

Gao Yang planned to drive to his ranch, but even though there was an expensive, dust-covered pickup parked at his ranch, he currently had no vehicle to drive there.

Besides, if he spontaneously wanted to do some odd jobs around the ranch, driving a vehicle worth five or six hundred thousand US dollars wouldn’t be quite right.

Gao Yang had already decided what car to buy, still a pickup, which would definitely suit the ranch, and he intended to purchase a Dodge Ram.

When Gao Yang spent over forty thousand US dollars on a Dodge Ram pickup, Yelena couldn’t help but laugh and said, “What should I call your car, a Ram’s Ram?”

Driving the newly bought vehicle, Gao Yang and Yelena went to the Aliland-Moson Studio.

People can’t live in sorrow all the time, and Jack had a smile on his face when they saw each other again.

As usual, they sat in Jack’s lounge, each cracking open a beer before getting down to business.

After slamming down a couple of gulps of the icy beer, Gao Yang let out a sigh of relief and casually said, “Jack, I need a handgun.”

Jack snapped his fingers, “What are your requirements?”

Gao Yang raised his beer bottle, clinked it against Jack’s, and smiled, “I want a powerful handgun that can easily be loaded with different types of ammunition, especially armor-piercing bullets.

My upcoming missions are basically behind enemy lines in special ops.

I need to face a variety of targets, unarmed soft targets, but will certainly encounter hard targets wearing ballistic protection.

Therefore, my current handgun won’t suffice.”

Jack nodded, “That’s right, the bullets your current handgun uses are strong in stopping power but suitable only for unarmored targets, with almost no armor-piercing capability.

Your requirement leaves only one option, a large-caliber revolver.”

Gao Yang laughed, “Exactly, a large-caliber revolver.

I don’t want to bring a Desert Eagle into battle.

I plan to carry two handguns, my current sidearm and a large-caliber revolver.”

Jack thought for a moment and then said, “In that case, you’re only preparing for close combat, right?”

Gao Yang nodded, “Yes, exclusively for close combat.

My primary weapon will be a shotgun, one main gun, with a large-caliber revolver loaded with armor-piercing bullets as backup for tough targets.”

The stopping power of a shotgun is extremely strong, but it severely lacks armor-piercing capability.

Even though shotgun pellets on a target wearing a ballistic vest could kill if they don’t penetrate, the stopping power would be greatly reduced.

Needing a one-shot lethal effect, Gao Yang had no choice but to carry an additional backup gun with a specific purpose.

Gao Yang was very adept with his handgun.

To the average person, a handgun is just a backup weapon, practically just for peace of mind, serving no great purpose.

But Gao Yang could be deadly just with a handgun, so he needed one that could penetrate body armor at close range.

Jack pondered for a moment and said, “There are many calibers of steel-core bullets for rotating-barrel handguns, and the larger calibers ensure penetration of most body armors.

As long as it’s not heavy-duty armor, there’s no need to worry.

So, it depends on your choice of gun.

Your requirement is easily met—a .357 Magnum steel-core round will do the job.

A Colt Python or a Smith & Wesson M686, either one is fine.”

Before Gao Yang could speak, Jack said with a grin, “If you don’t feel secure, you could choose something with even more power, how about a Smith & Wesson M500.

A .50 Magnum.

Even without specialized armor-piercing bullets, it’ll punch through heavy body armor.”

Gao Yang was exasperated, “Scram!

Of course, the M500 can penetrate heavy body armor.

Its power rivals that of high-caliber rifle bullets!

With the same 12.7mm caliber, it’s much more powerful than a Desert Eagle.

Do you want to break my wrist or have me shoot only once every half hour?

I need a combat weapon, not a toy.”

After speaking irritably, Gao Yang gestured dismissively, “Just give me the Smith & Wesson M686.

I’m not very familiar with rotating-barrel guns, but I have used the M686 a few times, and its seven-round capacity is more suitable for combat use.”

Jack nodded, “Alright, how long of a barrel?

Hmm, for a combat gun, six inches seems a bit long and inconvenient for drawing.”

Gao Yang waved his hand, “The shorter, the better.

What do you think about a two-and-a-half-inch barrel?”

Jack thought it over and shook his head, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.

A short barrel is handy for drawing, but the bullets will veer off at a distance, which isn’t suitable for you.

Because a shorter barrel won’t let you take advantage of your good marksmanship, I think a four-inch barrel is the most appropriate—convenient to carry, draw, and it also ensures enough precision and range.

Here’s what we’ll do, since you’re not familiar with rotating-barrel handguns, it’d be best to shoot a range of guns to see what you like.”

At the indoor shooting range, Jack brought out a bunch of handguns, both Colts and Smith & Wessons, just with variations in barrel length and grip material.

Jack picked up a black, walnut-gripped Colt Python with a six-inch barrel and smiled, “My favorite among rotating-barrel guns, the classic Python.

Shoot a few rounds and see what you think.”

Jack loaded six bullets into the cylinder, two lead-core, two hollow points, and two steel-core armor-piercing bullets.

Gao Yang put on ear protection, held the gun with both hands, fired till the cylinder was empty, and after removing the ear protection, pointed at the handgun and said, “I like this gun, it’s fantastic.

Give me one of these.”

Jack shrugged and replied, “You just started trying them out.”

Gao Yang fired a few rounds with the four-inch barrel Python and then the two-and-a-half-inch model.

After firing, he immediately said, “The four-inch is nice, very nice, quite balanced.

But the two-and-a-half-inch seems to have worse aim, I don’t like it.”

Jack said with a laugh, “The Python has been out of production for some time.

If you want a new one, you’ll have to custom order it with Colt.

This six-inch one belongs to a client, I can’t give it to you, but this four-inch barrel model was ordered by our studio and is not yet spoken for, so you can have it.”

Gao Yang looked over the four-inch barrel Python, also with a black body and walnut grip.

He didn’t plan to take the Python into battle, so he had hoped to collect a six-inch model since it’s classic.

But since the six-inch version would require waiting, he settled for the four-inch one.

Luckily, its color and grip material were to his liking.

The Python also comes in an eight-inch barrel model, but that length was a bit much for Gao Yang, who didn’t even consider trying it.

After setting aside the Python, Gao Yang picked up a six-inch M686 and nodded, “Hmm, this feels familiar.

I like this gun.”

After firing several shots, Gao Yang switched to a shorter barrel model and shot some more.

Since he planned to take the M686 into battle, he had brought his holster to test drawing the gun and firing quickly in an emergency.

Having tried each one in turn, Gao Yang had made up his mind.

He picked up a four-inch barrel M686 and, smiling, said, “This is the one.

I’m more comfortable with and prefer Smith & Wesson.

Prepare three leather holsters for me: one shoulder holster, one for the small of the back, and one for the thigh.

Oh, and make it for the left thigh.”

Since the M686 was a backup to the primary weapon, even the holster’s carry position needed to be considered strategically.

Jack jotted it down in his notebook and said in a deep voice, “The M686 is very popular, we have plenty in stock, and most are seven-shot models rather than six.

Take your pick of a few later, find the best one out of them.

Once you’ve chosen the best, I’ll fit it with a custom grip and adjust the trigger pull for you.”

Gao Yang replied with a smile, “That’s exactly what I want to hear.”

Jack pointed to the gun in Gao Yang’s hand and suggested, “Since you’ll be taking it into battle, I recommend using a black gun.

Shiny stainless steel is too visible at night.

Also, for a combat gun, a rubber grip is more suitable.

I’ll make you a rubber grip to fit your hand later.”

After thinking it over, Gao Yang quickly drew and fired with both the walnut grip and the rubber grip models to test them.

But he smiled at Jack and said, “No, give me a shiny stainless steel gun, and for the grip, I don’t want rubber.

Give me wood, I want the best kind of wood you have!

Ha, don’t look at me like that.

You heard right, I want a shiny gun!” (To be continued.
