Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 836 - 836 827 Loss
836: Chapter 827: Loss 836: Chapter 827: Loss Gao Yang had been living three days’ worth of non-stop life.
Whenever he had a chance, he would train Haifa; when tired, he would rest.
Apart from going to the restroom, he never left the training room, and even for sleep, he would just take short naps there.
The results were quite significant.
Haifa’s progress was obviously impressive, but unfortunately for the recruits playing human punching bags, having to line up every day to be kicked was anything but pleasant.
Gao Yang knew that Haifa’s departure was imminent, but as long as he had not received any notice, he had to keep teaching.
After spending a few days together, Gao Yang found that though Haifa might not be exceptionally talented, she was very dedicated to learning.
At least, she never complained of the hardship or cried out in fatigue and just silently endured the grueling practice.
Haifa brutally kicked the sparring partners wearing protective gear in turns, while Gao Yang merely observed from the side.
He was now glad, knowing his life shrouded in darkness would soon come to an end, yet he couldn’t help but worry a bit.
Gao Yang was concerned that Haifa might be treated as expendable, the kind of one-time assassin who was expected to carry out an attack and then, having served her purpose, could go die.
Gao Yang had good reason to worry, for the techniques he taught were meant to be used only once.
If Haifa ever had to put what he taught her to use, it meant that the end of her life was likely near.
Humans are not grass or trees, devoid of feelings.
Having been together until today, even though he had never even seen Haifa’s face, Gao Yang was not willing for the only purpose of the student he taught to be to die.
Haifa seemed rather despondent, her kicks lacked strength, and she often hung her head low, seemingly lost in thought.
There were things Gao Yang knew he should not and could not say, but seeing the students being kicked on the side coloring their mood, he couldn’t hold back and finally shouted, “Stop!”
When Haifa stopped, someone among the students suddenly yelled out, “About face, forward march, halt!”
Watching the students’ actions, Gao Yang was moved.
They had created an opportunity for him to speak.
Everyone understood what Haifa was training for and what was going on.
Some things didn’t need to be spoken; anyone with a bit of judgment could guess.
These students were soldiers, not spies.
They, like Gao Yang, were not yet able to think like spies would.
Gao Yang wouldn’t say anything too inappropriate.
Glancing at the students standing in front of him, he whispered to Haifa, “You are about to leave.
I don’t know what you’ll be doing, but be careful, and make sure you survive.
If possible, choose the moment when there’s a chance before you act.”
Haifa, who had been looking down, slightly lifted her head upon hearing Gao Yang’s words, her beautiful big eyes gazing at him for a moment before she said softly, “Thank you.”
Gao Yang didn’t know what to say.
After pondering carefully what he could say, he said in a deep voice, “I hope we’ll meet again someday.”
Haifa nodded slightly then said in an almost inaudible voice, “I hope so too, but it’s not very likely.”
After a faint sigh, Haifa suddenly said, “Actually, I’m not from Mossad.
I think you’ve guessed that already.
I know you’re all curious, so I might as well tell you why.
Anyway, Mossad’s rules don’t apply to me anymore.”
Haifa lifted her head, looking into Gao Yang’s eyes, and said softly, “I am Karima Enjem.”
Seeing no change in Gao Yang’s expression, Haifa, or rather Karima, tilted her head slightly and said, “It seems you haven’t heard of me.
I’m Lebanese.
I’m a star, or rather, I was one.
As for now, I am someone’s forbidden fruit.”
After speaking, Haifa kept her eyes firmly on Gao Yang, expecting to see some kind of reaction on his face, but she only saw the same focused expression, which made her voice sound a tad brighter.
“I need to learn how to kill.
Almost my entire family has been murdered, and now the murderer dotes on me.
I have many opportunities to get close to him as long as I am attractive to him.
The sole purpose of my getting close to him is to kill him.
I cannot bring any weapons near him, so to ensure I can carry out my vengeance, I sought a chance to contact Mossad.
They’re everywhere, and then Mossad brought me here to receive your training.”
Gao Yang was somewhat shocked, as things were not as he expected.
He had thought that Haifa was someone Mossad had found on short notice, but it turned out Haifa had approached Mossad herself.
If Mossad was willing to assist Karima, it indicated that the person she wanted to kill was also valuable to them.
Otherwise, Mossad wouldn’t have taken such an interest in helping her.
A slightly clichéd tale of vengeance, yet happening to Haifa, made Gao Yang unable to simply accept her fate as if he were just hearing a story.
Gao Yang opened his mouth and asked, “Is it worth it?”
Haifa hung her head low and replied, “It is worth it.
My very existence is now for the sake of vengeance, so I am willing to pay any price.
My sacrifice, my efforts, they’re all for revenge, just for revenge.
Vengeance is the only thing that keeps me going, the force that sustains me through all suffering.”
Gao Yang couldn’t dissuade someone driven to live by revenge.
He said in a deep voice, “I understand, but I want to tell you, if possible, try to survive.”
Haifa spoke softly, “I no longer harbor such extravagant hopes.
For me, it’s enough to see my enemies die before my eyes.”
Gao Yang exhaled softly and said, “Let me remind you of something.
If you’re fast enough, you can kill your target without them making a sound.
If you can quickly break their neck, you might have a chance to survive.
I suggest you don’t rush into action until you’re sure you can take your vengeance in one fell swoop.”
Haifa nodded gently and replied, “Understood.”
Gao Yang also nodded and said, “Good luck.
That’s all I can do for you now.
Survive, and you still have a long life ahead of you that can be spent in happiness.”
Haifa said quietly, “Without revenge, I cannot find happiness.
But still, thank you.
Besides all that you have taught me, I must thank you for letting me eat my fill these past few days.”
After a light laugh, Haifa shook her head slightly and said, “To keep my figure, I’ve almost forgotten what it feels like to be full.”
Gao Yang remained silent.
Haifa gazed at him, then suddenly asked, “Don’t you want to see what I look like?”
Truth be told, Gao Yang didn’t really want to know what Haifa looked like.
Gao Yang did not want to see an acquaintance go to their death.
Beyond that, he had no feelings for Haifa other than those between a trainer and a trainee; he had no other emotional attachment to her.
For Gao Yang, it was better not to know too much about someone who was destined to die soon, especially their appearance.
It was better not even to know their name, because otherwise, the memory would only become more profound, and that was not a good thing.
Had it not been for this conversation with Haifa, Gao Yang would only remember having taught a woman with the codename Haifa, who had beautiful eyes—and that would be all.
In time, he might have completely forgotten about this woman known as Haifa.
But unfortunately, not only did he now know Haifa’s real name, he also knew she was a woman worthy of admiration.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Haifa was about to reveal her face to Gao Yang of her own accord.
Rationally, Gao Yang did not want to know all this true information about Haifa, particularly her appearance.
However, when a woman takes the initiative to show her face, how could Gao Yang possibly refuse?
Gao Yang didn’t speak; he merely expressed his stance with wide eyes and an expectant look.
But Haifa just smiled softly and said in a low voice, “You’re so easily embarrassed, but it’s really cute.”
Gao Yang didn’t understand how he’d become associated with the word ‘shy,’ but while Haifa spoke, she was already lifting her mask.
Gao Yang saw a pale chin and a very red, enticing lower lip, as well as brown hair cascading down the side of her face, but just then, there was a knock at the door.
Haifa quickly lowered her mask again and stepped back, while the soldiers immediately turned their gaze on Gao Yang.
Without being invited in, after knocking twice, the door was pushed open.
General Wolfgang and Mr.
L, who hadn’t appeared these past few days, stepped into the training room.
The situation in the training room was no different from the usual.
Mr.
L gestured to Haifa, who promptly lowered her head and walked to his side.
It was then that General Wolfgang spoke with a grave voice, “I declare your mission concluded.”
After General Wolfgang finished speaking, Mr.
L nodded to Gao Yang, then turned and nodded a farewell to the row of soldiers, loudly stating, “Thank you for your efforts these past few days.
I am very grateful.
Goodbye.”
Once Mr.
L had finished speaking, he shook hands with Wolfgang and then gestured for Haifa to leave, pushing the door open for her.
Haifa, head bowed and silent, left the training room.
Mr.
L followed, merely bowing slightly as he left completely.
When only General Wolfgang remained in the training room, he waved his hand and said, “The mission is over.
You’re all acquainted with each other; I’ll give you ten minutes to catch up, and then you can disperse and go about your business.
Ram, come to my office later; I have something to say to you.”
According to the rules, Gao Yang wasn’t supposed to interact with the trainees.
Despite the fact that Wolfgang knew Gao Yang and his trainees wouldn’t wait until now to catch up, he still considerately gave them ten minutes.
After Wolfgang left, a trainee said in dismay, “She didn’t even say goodbye to us.”
Another trainee snapped, “Shut up.
Don’t get emotional over what you shouldn’t.
She’s just another trainee!”
“I know,” the first one replied.
“I just feel that someone with such beautiful eyes shouldn’t be lost so easily.
All right, I’m being sentimental, but I meant nothing more.”
Gao Yang was also feeling down.
He hadn’t planned to see Haifa’s face, but when he actually had the chance, the interruption left him with an indescribable sense of loss, especially with the thought that he would never see Haifa again in his lifetime.
