Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 793 - 793 784 Let You Be Arrogant
793: Chapter 784: Let You Be Arrogant 793: Chapter 784: Let You Be Arrogant Being a lone hero is no easy feat, and right now, F**k is like an animal being hunted, the most miserable and unfortunate part being that he’s surrounded.
Gao Yang felt he could run no longer, mainly because his body was severely lacking water.
In the hot weather and through extreme exertion, his skin had no sweat.
This time he couldn’t afford a slow run.
Summoning his last bit of strength, Gao Yang sprinted until he found it hard to breathe.
Still far from the forest, and aware that entering it meant a repetitive chase, the extremely thirsty Gao Yang, mind unclear as to why, suddenly stopped and threw himself to the ground.
Gao Yang thought he must have gone mad to stop, but he would rather stand his ground and engage in a fight to the death against the dozen or so people pursuing him than run any further.
Shooting from a prone position usually offered the best accuracy, but Gao Yang’s rapid breathing made it hard to maintain stability when firing.
So he got up from the ground again.
Gao Yang decided to shoot from a kneeling position.
Even though his heavy breathing would certainly affect his accuracy, he could adjust dynamically and fire the moment he aimed at an enemy, which would be more accurate than shooting from the ground.
Kneeling on one knee, the rifle barrel moved with his breath.
After waiting only about ten seconds, Gao Yang raised his gun and fired.
The men he was facing had good stamina; they were chasing him fast.
When they appeared in Gao Yang’s sights, the one in front fell to the ground at the sound of the shot, and those behind didn’t stop – they kept running due to their momentum.
The distance was a little over two hundred meters.
Gao Yang fired rhythmically, shot by shot.
By the time all the pursuers had hit the ground, Gao Yang had taken down five men.
Possibly not expecting a single man facing dozens of them to stop and bravely exchange fire, the dozen or so who reluctantly halted were momentarily disorganized.
However, they soon regrouped and began returning fire at Gao Yang.
Still kneeling on one knee, Gao Yang continued firing at the not-so-visible figures lying in the tall grass.
After the enemy dropped to the ground, Gao Yang’s shooting wasn’t very effective since he could hardly see the silhouettes covered by the tall grass, and the enemies’ firing wasn’t much better; after dropping, the weeds similarly obscured their line of sight.
Soon, people began to stand up, taking a standing position to shoot at Gao Yang, but this posed one outcome: as soon as they stood up and before they could fire properly, they were taken down by a short burst from Gao Yang.
Whoever stood up, died.
Suppressed by Gao Yang alone, the enemies dared not move anymore, but at this point, Gao Yang had lost his patience.
He stood up and, exposing himself to enemy fire, he shot repeatedly at those lying on the ground.
Gao Yang moved as he shot, due to the not-so-distant range.
For someone with basic shooting training, hitting a human target at this range presented some difficulty, but Gao Yang had to be prepared in case among the enemies were some with good marksmanship.
Besides, standing still against the sweeping fire of seven or eight rifles was very dangerous.
Gao Yang took a few steps, fired a shot, and repeated the process.
After a few rounds, the enemies lying in the undergrowth couldn’t hold out anymore.
Though they were many, they found themselves on the receiving end of a vicious slaughter, panic inevitable.
A black man was the first to get up and without looking back, ran away.
After a few steps, he hid behind some acacia bushes.
Gao Yang intentionally spared those fleeing and didn’t shoot.
Seeing the leader escape without danger, the remaining few crawled a bit before breaking into a desperate sprint.
Gao Yang had killed at least seven or eight of the opposing men with his submachine gun and had driven away the rest.
Not in a hurry to leave, he quickly ran towards several dead bodies.
It took him just tens of seconds to cover the two hundred meters.
The thing Gao Yang feared the most didn’t happen; no new pursuers had arrived.
After ensuring his safety by firing at those injured but not yet dead, Gao Yang crouched down.
With one hand, he kept watch for any approaching enemies and with the other, he grabbed water canteens from the bodies.
Shaking the canteen, which was half full, Gao Yang was overjoyed.
With one hand, he unscrewed the cap and, without removing the canteen, leaned close to the body and drank the half bottle of water in one gulp.
After throwing away the empty canteen, Gao Yang quickly moved to another body with a canteen, gulping down another half bottle of water.
Capitalizing on the time, he pocketed two more canteens with water.
This time he took them off the bodies and attached them to himself.
The canteens weren’t full, but Gao Yang guessed he had consumed about one and a half liters of water, and the canteens he’d taken held approximately the same amount.
With this supply, he wouldn’t have to worry about dehydration for a while.
With water, Gao Yang felt much more comfortable and reassured.
When he was thirsty, Gao Yang didn’t want to run at all, but after drinking some water, he found himself interested in continuing to run.
Securing water took Gao Yang less than two minutes.
He had intended to drink more water and collect more canteens before leaving, but the sound of new shouts forced him to abandon this plan instantly and start running again.
Severely dehydrated, just over a liter of water would only make one feel better, no longer so thirsty, but for the body, it was like a drop in the bucket.
To fully rehydrate, Gao Yang needed much more water.
He started running again, but this time, Gao Yang didn’t head into the forest; he had decided that if he were to die, it would be in the river.
So he ran along the thorny shrubs, knowing that once he got past this patch, he would reach the riverbank.
The edge of the thorny shrubs couldn’t possibly be neat, and the individual bushes growing at the edge could provide Gao Yang with cover.
After running a while, Gao Yang heard gunfire from behind him once again.
Looking back, he saw the enemy was still far away, and Gao Yang couldn’t be bothered to hide.
As long as he wasn’t unlucky enough to be hit by a stray bullet, he didn’t have to worry about being shot from four hundred meters away.
He couldn’t hit a four-hundred-meter target with an unscoped rifle himself, let alone a moving one, so Gao Yang was absolutely certain no one could accurately shoot him.
He changed direction, and this time Gao Yang’s run went smoothly until he passed the thorny shrubs.
Once his view was unobstructed, he immediately saw the river.
With a soft cheer, Gao Yang turned towards the river and ran the shortest route to it.
To Gao Yang’s right were the thorny shrubs, which grew all the way to the bank of the river.
As the thorny shrubs on his right began to thin out and Gao Yang was just about to reach the shore, he discovered about five to six hundred meters to the right across the river, there were about fifteen vehicles parked.
After circling a great distance, he had wound up on the other side of the ambush convoy.
Gao Yang hesitated; there were machine guns on those vehicles, and five to six hundred meters was not a safe range.
If he left the protection of the thorny bushes to drink directly from the river and got discovered, that would be disastrous.
After a moment of hesitation, Gao Yang decided to first go have a proper drink of water and then see.
Perhaps there were no people in the convoy on the other side, or perhaps they hadn’t noticed what was happening over here.
There were still pursuers behind him.
Having made up his mind, he had to act quickly; Gao Yang sprinted towards the riverbank.
“Don’t see me, don’t see me, no one sees me.”
Praying not to be discovered, Gao Yang reached the riverbank. However, he did not adopt an ostrich policy, utterly ignoring the machine guns in the convoy.
He kept an eye on the situation on the other side of the vehicles.
When it seemed like someone in the pickup was moving, Gao Yang’s heart sank.
He was too far to see clearly without binoculars what people over at the convoy were doing, but Gao Yang didn’t dare to take any more risks.
When he was only three or four meters from the water, just a stone’s throw away, Gao Yang turned around and ran back.
Gao Yang had just taken off when he heard machine gun fire.
Watching the bullets tear up the ground not far from him, he felt relieved and decided to run along the riverbank.
If he couldn’t drink water because of being pinned by machine gun fire, then the plan was to run further along the river and drink there.
Gao Yang ran faster and faster with this in mind, but he quickly realized something was wrong.
The gunfire had stopped, but now there were sounds of cars.
Without stopping, Gao Yang glimpsed over his shoulder only to see two pickup trucks speeding along the opposite bank of the river.
Although the bumps made it impossible for the machine guns to fire, the distance between him and the trucks was rapidly closing.
“F**k, this is too much, to think I’m an easy target just because I don’t show my fangs.”
Though he swore in frustration, Gao Yang wasn’t really angry.
Far from the pickups, he could only be targeted by the machine guns, but since the pickups were coming to finish him off, it was no longer clear who would end up dead.
If the pickups stopped and the machine guns aboard started firing, the exposed Gao wouldn’t be too sure of his fate.
But the pickups didn’t stop, and the machine guns couldn’t fire, which meant they had entered Gao Yang’s range, and he was more than happy about it.
He squatted down on the spot, raised his rifle, and aimed at the rapidly approaching pickups.
When they got within two hundred meters, Gao Yang was confident, but he still didn’t fire.
He wanted to see just how close those pickups dared to get.
Finally, when the pickups were less than a hundred meters away in a straight line, they braked to a halt.
The moment the first vehicle stopped, Gao Yang’s first shot killed the machine gunner in the truck bed, the second killed the assistant gunner, and the third killed the driver.
The two pickups were close to each other.
Seeing the results of Gao Yang’s swift three shots, the machine gunner on the second vehicle was terrified, and instead of trying to kill Gao Yang, he leaped out of the truck bed.
But just as he was leaping out, Gao Yang shot him in the back of the head.
Gao Yang had aimed for the back, but as the machine gunner fell, his head happened to be in the perfect position.
With one shot killing the braver assistant gunner and another the driver, now there was no one left to interrupt Gao Yang’s drinking.
