Mercenary’s War
Chapter 789 - 789 780 The Old Man who Broke the Gun

789: Chapter 780: The Old Man who Broke the Gun 789: Chapter 780: The Old Man who Broke the Gun A Tuareg person reprimanded a jubilant black man in rage, then waved his hand at the Tuareg people who had gathered in front and spoke a few words in a low voice.

Thereafter, the five Tuareg people dispersed and moved forward, holding their guns and squatting down in a vigilant stance.

All masked in black veils, Gao Yang couldn’t discern which one of the Tuareg was the key figure, but then one of the Tuareg spoke up, giving Gao Yang a target to focus on.

The speaking Tuareg quickly stepped forward, squatted beside the bloodstain, rested his rifle on one side of his body, glanced at the blood and then in the direction it dripped towards, waved his hand again, and murmured a few words.

Then, several black people and the Tuareg in front moved ahead to continue the search.

Gao Yang noticed the AK47 rifle of the speaking Tuareg.

Although all their guns were quite new and decent, the gun used by the one squatting was notably old, its bluing worn off revealing the shiny metal underneath, and its wooden stock also looked very aged.

Gao Yang figured that the squatting Tuareg was an old man, and if that old gun was well-worn by him, it must have taken years to do so.

Having a better gun but choosing to use a well-worn old rifle could be a sentiment shared by many, but Gao Yang was puzzled as it seemed that the rifle was so old that its rifling might be worn out.

Could an old man like him fire very accurately with such a worn-out rifle?

Doubt notwithstanding, Gao Yang still wanted to take out the Tuareg who seemed to be an old man, but he lacked the opportunity.

The Tuareg remained alert, and only after a few seemed like cannon fodder had continued along the trail of blood did the others slowly follow.

Gao Yang had no chance to shoot, and watching the old rifle carrying Tuareg slowly walking forward frustrated him greatly as he couldn’t shoot him in the back of his head.

After the lagging Tuareg had passed by Gao Yang’s ambush spot, Gao Yang ended up completely behind the pursuers, but he did not see the outcome he had hoped for.

The vigilance of the Tuareg was too high, they never bunched up together, and at most, Gao Yang could hit two or three of them.

Being too greedy and trying to take down more would risk being discovered and retaliated against by the enemy.

Gao Yang didn’t dare act recklessly in front of the old Tuareg man.

One must not be too greedy, the enemy had taken the bait, giving him a good opportunity which should be enough.

Hoping to wipe out everyone in one go was simply unrealistic.

Gao Yang had been holding a grenade with the pin pulled out and now he let go, allowing the grenade to sit in his hand for two seconds before he softly tossed it out without a sound.

Gao Yang aimed the grenade at a person, though he was not as precise as Frey in throwing grenades, it was enough to ensure killing one person.

But the main purpose of Gao Yang throwing the grenade was not just that; after throwing the grenade, Gao Yang immediately raised his rifle.

Without taking careful aim, Gao Yang trusted his instinct and fired a shot, hitting the target just as the grenade exploded.

By then, Gao Yang had already fired a second shot and quickly adjusted his rifle, aiming at a Tuareg who had fallen to the ground and firing.

The sound of the grenade explosion could not cover up the three gunshots, but the loud noise of the explosion could disturb one’s ears, causing the brain to focus first on the location of the explosion and unable to immediately determine the direction from which the gunshots came.

After firing, Gao Yang did not move.

He didn’t rush to leave but stayed quietly at his original position, motionless.

The shouts of the Tuareg rose, and a Tuareg close to the explosion site began firing in a completely unrelated direction to Gao Yang, then shouted loudly.

Influenced by that Tuareg’s judgment, those lagging behind all started shooting in the wrong direction and rapidly moved forward.

Gao Yang felt he could leave, but just then, several people who had stayed in front returned to where Gao Yang had launched his attack.

The one with the old rifle quickly looked around, then went over to the body lying on the ground that Gao Yang had killed.

Gao Yang really wanted to kill that Tuareg holding the old rifle, but there were too many enemies, and they were too close, less than 30 meters away.

Gao Yang was not confident he could escape under the gunfire of nearly ten people, so he felt staying put was a better choice.

But when he saw that Tuareg with the old rifle finger the bullet holes on the body and then look up towards the bushes where he was positioned, Gao Yang raised his rifle and shot.

Gao Yang didn’t aim carefully; at a distance of thirty meters, he didn’t need to.

But just as he was about to fire, he noticed that the Tuareg man had lunged forward.

Although Gao Yang’s momentum made him fire his gun, he knew he couldn’t hit the Tuareg man holding the old gun.

Without even checking to see if he hit anyone, Gao Yang swung his gun sideways and fired a sweep towards the most populated area, then twisted his body and ran for it.

The Tuareg man with the old gun was too cunning.

If he hadn’t dodged the moment he spotted Gao Yang’s hiding spot but instead tried to shoot, he would have been dead.

But he didn’t try to shoot, nor did he even make a sound to signal alarm; he simply chose to dodge.

The first thing he thought of was not to kill the enemy but to save himself, a trait of a veteran soldier and the biggest reason they survived wars for decades.

It’s better to dodge a risk.

Discovering later that it was a false alarm is just a matter for laughter, but not dodging could cost one’s life.

Hearing gunshots behind him and bullets whizzing past his ears, Gao Yang could do nothing but run for his life.

The old man dodged his shot, surprising him and putting him at a disadvantage.

Gao Yang’s camouflage was effective not just when he was still, but also in motion.

In the snow, targeting a black spot versus a white spot is obviously easier.

While running, Gao Yang had completely lost control of the battlefield.

He could only rely on luck now.

Gao Yang’s error was his overconfidence.

His enemy fell for his trap, making Gao Yang think he could finish them off in one fell swoop; thus, he chose to ambush from a position very close to the enemy.

Though the enemy was somewhat careless, they still maintained basic vigilance.

Gao Yang’s ambush achieved some success, but not the effect he had hoped for.

If Gao Yang had ambushed from a farther distance, he couldn’t have guaranteed killing the Tuareg elder he most wanted to eliminate, but he would have ensured his own safety.

So, he risked a closer ambush, but ultimately, he never knew if he killed the old man.

After realizing the Tuareg elder’s vigilance, Gao Yang would no longer allow himself to get too close to the enemy, but that was a concern for later.

Right now, his priority was to escape the enemy’s gunfire and pursuit.

Fortunately, the jungle had many trees to block the bullets.

Most of the enemy couldn’t spot Gao Yang immediately, and the only person who realized his location first thought of himself; therefore, when people finally reacted and started shooting towards Gao Yang’s hiding place, he was already far from where they thought he was.

By the time they adjusted their perception and accurately located him, Gao Yang already had places to hide and a safe distance.

Good gunmanship entails accurate shooting, quick reaction, and quick firing.

It’s the hallmark of a comprehensive marksman.

Otherwise, Gao Yang, who can complete a shot in a shorter time than others, wouldn’t have caused such a sensation.

Gao Yang could do what others usually couldn’t, so he escaped under a hail of bullets without even a scratch on him.

With the enemy pressing close behind, Gao Yang, taking cover behind a tree, didn’t dare linger.

His magazine was empty, and without checking to see where exactly his adversaries were, he tossed two grenades backwards and quickly swapped the tapes bound magazines before reloading.

After that, Gao Yang darted left, exposing half his body before swiftly pulling back and running crouched to the right.

A feint; it’s meant for the veteran.

For rookies who were cannon fodder, Gao Yang’s feint was ineffective, but it could provoke the veteran’s lethal shot.

Indeed, when Gao Yang changed direction, he heard the whizzing of a bullet past him.

Precise shooting is hard, and consecutive precise shooting is even harder.

Very few veterans could manage it.

Gao Yang’s feint drew fire, creating a relatively safe situation for himself.

Although the slower-reacting rookies began firing in the correct direction as he changed course, their gunmanship was not as accurate.

Fighting experts is exhausting, not just physically but mentally.

Now, Gao Yang had to think through every move before making it.

Even though this thinking process was short, it was still incredibly draining.

Hearing gunshots behind him, after several twists and turns, Gao Yang stopped behind a tree.

The enemy was changing their tactics, pressing him hard.

They attempted to force Gao Yang to keep running without a chance to set up an ambush, and if Gao Yang dared to stop and exchange fire, that would be exactly what they wanted.
