Mercenary’s War
Chapter 656 - 656 649 Disaster Out of Nowhere

656: Chapter 649: Disaster Out of Nowhere 656: Chapter 649: Disaster Out of Nowhere Without a doubt, Gao Yang and his group had encountered an attack, although it wasn’t aimed at them specifically.

They had simply found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, crossing paths with a Syrian Government Forces convoy and ending up as unintended victims.

Gao Yang and his team were far enough from the exploded IED, about a hundred meters away.

At this distance, a roadside bomb would not be devastating, but it was still not safe enough.

The moment he saw the dust violently billow up, Gao Yang instinctively ducked his head, trying to shrink below the dashboard of the car.

Then, he heard a strange tearing sound of metal.

Not feeling anything unusual on his body, Gao Yang suddenly looked up, only to see a palm-sized piece of metal that had pierced the upper part of the windshield, continuing backward, nearly splitting half of the car’s roof.

“Ambushed!

Get out!”

After yelling into the intercom, Gao Yang simultaneously pulled open the car door and turned his head to look at Li Jinfang, who was driving, only to find Li’s face covered in blood.

“Curtis!

Toad, your face!”

Li Jinfang didn’t speak.

After opening the car door, he yelled, “I’m fine!

Take cover!”

Raja also tumbled out from the backseat, and once Gao Yang got out of the car, he first opened the rear door, grabbed his rifle from the backseat, and then pointed towards the slope beside the roadbed and shouted, “Get down!

Get down!

Locate the enemy’s position!”

By this time, almost everyone from the four vehicles had gotten out.

It seemed okay; no one looked injured.

Being this far from the site of the explosion, apart from some larger fragments, things like steel ball bearings and iron nails had lost their lethality at such a distance.

Based on what Gao Yang knew and the evacuation route supplied by Polovich, their location was under the control of the Government Forces.

In theory, although they encountered a roadside bomb, they should not face an enemy attack.

However, Gao Yang at this moment could not be certain whether the Rebel Army would launch an attack right after.

If the Rebel Army had infiltrated this area, it would not just be a simple roadside bomb attack.

The Syrian Government Forces’ truck convoy was still shrouded in dust, which wouldn’t clear for a few minutes, but Gao Yang felt that the convoy wouldn’t suffer a total annihilation, as there was just one bomb, and the trucks numbered at least half a dozen.

Most crucially, the uneasy feeling in Gao Yang’s heart did not subside with the explosion of the roadside bomb.

On the contrary, it grew stronger.

It could only be said that their luck was truly bad, as Gao Yang’s convoy encountered the Government Forces’ convoy at a most inopportune time, right at the place where the Rebel Army laid mines.

Otherwise, whether earlier or later, Gao Yang and his team wouldn’t have suffered this unwarranted disaster.

“Rabbit, Bat, watch our six!”

If the Rebel Army had further attacks planned, it could happen on both sides of the road.

Gao needed to eliminate the possibility of being attacked from behind.

After giving his orders, Gao Yang bellowed, “Test Tube, Toad is injured!”

Bruce ran swiftly with his first aid kit to Li Jinfang’s side, turned Li’s blood-stained face, and shouted, “His ear is split open, F**k, you lucky yet unlucky bastard.”

Li Jinfang’s left ear was horizontally split in the middle, exposing the stark white bone.

But he indeed was fortunate; had the shrapnel veered just one millimeter, more than his ear would have been split.

Bruce took a can of spray and sprayed it wildly on Li Jinfang’s ear while yelling, “Toad’s injury is light, doesn’t affect mobility.

Just stitch up the ear once we’re safe.”

Gao Yang’s heart was somewhat relieved, but just then, he heard Cui Bo yell from behind, “Enemies!

800 meters away, unknown numbers, heavy weapons.”

As soon as Cui Bo’s words dropped, the explosions followed, and Gao Yang saw the Syrian Government Forces running out of the no-longer-spreading dust cloud.

The truck must have been transporting troops; otherwise, at least thirty people wouldn’t be stumbling out of the dust.

But after those Government Forces soldiers left the truck, the Rebel Army’s assault finally began.

The enemy was indeed behind them.

The farmlands on both sides of the highway were flat, with nothing to provide cover between Gao Yang’s group and the enemy.

Gao Yang turned to look, only to see the Rebel Army concealed in the farmlands opening fire on the Government Forces leaving their trucks.

Gunfire and mortar shells came flying in, and the Government soldiers who had just escaped disaster fell one after another under the sudden assault, although it was unclear whether they had dropped to the ground intentionally or had been hit.

Gao Yang wanted to cry but had no tears; they were too close to the Government Forces, and it seemed normal to be mistaken for rebels by them, while it also made sense for the rebels farther away to mistake them for Government Forces.

Gao Yang shouted, “Hold fire, stay alert.

If anyone shoots at us, hit them first; open fire without discrimination!

Now, get across to the other side of the road!”

The highway was about a meter higher than the farmlands on either side, which could be used as a cover.

But as soon as Gao Yang spoke, from the other side, a machine gun, in fact, a heavy machine gun, was set up and fired at the Government Forces’ convoy.

Indeed, the Rebel Army had ambushes on both sides.

No need to go to the other side of the road anymore, wherever you run, you get hit.

Rafael and Eileen, who had just stood up, quickly ran back, but as they hadn’t yet managed to lie down, an explosion suddenly occurred between them.

“RPG!

I’ve been hit!

Medic!

Medic!”

Rafael screamed with all his might.

Having joined the Satan Mercenary Group not long ago, he was more accustomed to calling for a medic rather than Test Tube.

Gao Yang was both angry and anxious, the unexpected disaster seemed to be costing them dearly.

“It’s the rebels who are firing, open fire!

Open fire!

Push the rebels back!”

The ambushing Rebel Army charged.

In theory, the rebels shouldn’t have attacked civilians who happened to encounter the Syrian Government Forces by chance.

Gao Yang and his group, being innocently involved, shouldn’t have been attacked by the rebels; being attacked by the nearby government forces was more likely.

But in the chaos of battle, there’s no reasoning, especially for the rebels – if they see an opportunity, they take it, without caring for the details.

Gao Yang twisted his body to lie down, his Blade of Satan starting to fire, with machine gunners, rocket launcher operators, and mortar units as his main targets.

The distance was still significant; only Gao Yang, Cui Bo, and Glolov were firing.

As soon as Gao Yang and his team opened fire, the firepower from the government forces immediately pressed down on them.

Bruce sprinted toward Rafael, but as machine gun bullets riddled the ground at his feet, he danced his way to Rafael, hopping and stumbling through.

Gao Yang and his team spread out by about thirty meters, with Bruce being about twenty meters from Rafael.

But this short distance of twenty meters was not easy to cross.

Gao Yang immediately turned his gun barrel and took out the machine gunner targeting them, but right then, about seven or eight meters from Bruce, who was bent over and running hard, an explosion knocked Bruce to the ground.

In fact, everything happened too quickly.

Caught off guard, even if Gao Yang shot as fast and accurately as he could, it was impossible to neutralize all fire threats within the mere two or three seconds, even with Cui Bo and Glolov’s assistance.

However, after continuous fire, Gao Yang and Cui Bo managed to take out four rebel fire points in a short time, momentarily stopping the rain of bullets directed at them.

After Bruce fell, he immediately got up again and staggered toward Rafael.

But amid Rafael’s loud shout of “Get down!

Get down!

My wounds aren’t severe; check on Eileen!”

Bruce, being closer to Eileen, stood up and ran a step, but then he fell to the ground again; this time, he happened to fall right beside Eileen.

Bruce immediately got up on his hands, glanced at Eileen, and bellowed, “Where are you hit!”

Eileen, with a face full of pain, yelled out, “Fuck, I’ve been shot in the ass!”

Eileen was lying face up; after Bruce flipped her over and grabbed her bulky trousers, he slashed them open with his knife.

After a quick look, he shouted, “Shrapnel wound!

Shot in the ass and thigh, but it’s not fatal; wait while I check on Fork!”

Eileen lay face down, looking up at Bruce with a look of astonishment and said, “Fuck!

Test Tube, you’re hit!”

Bruce ignored Eileen and crawled toward Rafael on the ground.

By that time, Gao Yang had already killed four rebels, and the bullets heading towards them had ceased, greatly relieving the pressure.

“Rabbit!

Cover our back, Test Tube, report your status!”

As Bruce checked Rafael, he shouted, “Tyrannosaurus’ buttocks and legs are wounded, not severely.

Fork has wounds on his legs and back, all from RPG armor-piercing shell fragments.

I need to assess the severity of his injuries!

Test Tube is hit in the left abdomen and left leg, likely by RPG fragmentation grenades; the extent of the injuries is unclear!”

The RPG-7 has many types of ammunition, but the most common are armor-piercing shells, which are effective against armored vehicles and fortifications but less so against personnel.

The killing radius is also limited, which is why Rafael and Eileen’s injuries from the shrapnel were not too severe.

Armor-piercing shells and fragmentation grenades use different explosive charges and have different effects, so naturally, their explosion sounds differ and an expert can tell the difference.

The grenades designed explicitly for anti-personnel are much more destructive than the armor-piercing shells.

Rafael pushed Bruce away and after freeing his arm, he yelled, “Fuck, fuck!

Look after yourself!

I’m fine, damn it; check your own wounds first!”

Bruce immediately yelled back at Rafael, “You shut the hell up; I’m the medic here, and I’m in charge!

Don’t waste my time, lie still and let me work!” (To be continued.
