Before being woken up by the loudspeaker the next morning, Gao Yang had curled up in the car, managing to catch some uneasy sleep.
They stayed in the car, waiting for the morning assembly to end, then continued the surveillance.
When it was time for breakfast, Raja continued to observe while Gao Yang and the others stayed in the car waiting for any news.
Although many people passed by their vehicle, no one gave the car with the sitting persons a second glance.
In the rapidly growing Rebel Army, it was common to see people sleeping in their cars due to the lack of accommodation.
“Raja went to have breakfast.
He will inform us if there’s any news.
I’m really not feeling well; I need to catch some sleep.
Anyone else who wants to rest should do so now, but remember to leave someone on guard,”
Gao Yang felt sleepy and, after speaking a few words into the radio, he whispered to Frey in the driver’s seat, “I need to sleep some more.
I can’t even hold a gun steady right now.
Wake me up in an hour if I’m not awake.”
After instructing Frey, Gao Yang quickly fell back into a deep sleep.
He had been on surveillance until three o’clock the previous night and was extremely tired.
After being gently nudged, Gao Yang immediately woke up, and this time, he was fully alert.
Gao Yang glanced around; Raja had not returned yet.
Frey whispered, “Boss, it’s been an hour.”
After glancing at the Free Syrian headquarters, Gao Yang frowned and said, “An hour has passed, and there’s no sign of Raja or any news?”
“He hasn’t come back, no news either.”
Gao Yang couldn’t help but worry and said, “F**k.
What if something happened!”
Just as Gao Yang finished speaking, he saw Raja turning a corner and quickly walking towards them.
Gao Yang breathed a sigh of relief and said, “This guy really can’t resist being mentioned.”
After Raja hastened back, he anxiously said, “There’s a new development.
The Victory Front people announced at the breakfast spot that the situation here is too chaotic.
To end the chaos, the Victory Front is asking all unaffiliated rebels to join them and follow their command.
They are going to conduct a sweep of the whole village.”
Gao Yang frowned and asked, “Why are they doing this?
Just to expand their influence, right?”
Raja nodded and replied, “Yes, just to bolster their strength.
Now that many people are arriving, there are many who act independently or belong to small groups.
The Victory Front wants to pull them in.
With more people, naturally, their power increases.”
Gao Yang sighed and said, “No worries, we won’t join.
They can’t possibly force us.”
After pondering for a moment, Raja said in a grave tone, “If someone comes asking us to join the Victory Front, tell them we are mercenaries hired by Saudi Arabia.
That should prevent any issues.”
“Understood,” Gao Yang said.
Raja breathed a long sigh of relief and said, “During breakfast, there were too many people.
Considering the situation from yesterday, dinner time won’t work either.
Now we can only wait and see what happens during lunch.
If the Free Syrian people don’t leave, we’ll just have to wait.”
While Raja was speaking, Frey suddenly said, “The Free Syrian people are back, look.”
Gao Yang shifted his gaze back to see about fifty to sixty Free Syrians heading towards their headquarters in a mighty procession.
As Gao Yang continued observing intently, he suddenly heard several loud bangs.
Gao Yang’s heart tightened, and he turned to look behind.
He saw about a dozen people standing by the road behind their car, among them a tall Caucasian furiously smashing his hands against the windows of the car where Cui Bo, Tommy, and Glolov were seated.
“Trouble’s here, prepare to fight.
Out of the car!”
After shouting into the radio, Gao Yang quickly opened the car door and got out, shouting at the Caucasian who was pounding on the car windows, “Hey, stop that.
What are you doing?”
The tall man, glaring at Gao Yang with anger, yelled, “Get out of the way.
Move your car!”
The man stood about 1.9 meters tall, dressed in tactical gear, looking like a West Asian person.
Around him, some wore tactical gear while others were in camouflage.
Importantly, their weapons and equipment differed markedly from those of the rebels.
Since there was no more parking space, Gao Yang and his group had parked next to a car already by the roadside.
The inside car would need to move before theirs could, and since there were always people in their car, they just stayed parked there, ready to move if necessary.
Behind the agitated tall man smashing the car window was a bungalow with a courtyard.
As he spoke, people kept coming out of the courtyard steadily.
Gao Yang glanced over and saw there were at least thirty of them.
At this moment, all the Satan Mercenaries had gotten out of their cars.
Although they hadn’t raised their gun barrels, their safeties were off, ready to fire if necessary.
“Small endurance averts great ruin; it’s just a matter of moving the cars, no need to start a conflict,” Gao Yang said to the tall man in a stern voice.
“Sorry for blocking your way, we’ll move our cars right now.”
In a perilous situation, one had to be cautious.
Gao Yang apologized, hoping to quickly dispel the slight displeasure and then waved his hand, saying to everyone, “Move our car.”
“Wait, who are you?”
Gazing at Gao Yang, then at Cui Bo and Li Jinfang, and also at Lucica, whose face was covered but could still be identified as a woman, a West Asian person interrupted Gao Yang’s words and asked lightly.
Gao Yang shrugged and said, “We are here to fight, just like you.”
The West Asian man smiled, glanced at the equipment on Gao Yang and his group, and sneered again, “Which organization?”
Raja shouted, “Hey buddy, it’s none of your business.”
The West Asian man coldly chuckled and said a few words in Turkish to the people behind him, which triggered a round of laughter.
Then, the tall speaker also said something in Russian, causing another burst of laughter.
Gao Yang understood; these people were Turks and Russians, though those speaking Russian could possibly be from other countries, considering many in Central and Eastern Europe and CIS countries speak Russian.
They probably weren’t Chechens, however, since Chechens typically sport big beards, unlike these Russian speakers who were clean-shaven.
Gao Yang couldn’t understand what they were saying, but Glolov, who understood Russian, called out loudly to the tall man, “Russian?”
The big man glanced at Glolov and said disdainfully, “Yes, Russian.”
Glolov nodded and responded, “I am too.
Look, we really don’t have any issue here, so let’s end it here.
We’ll move our car, and you guys can leave.
That’s it.”
After contemptuously spitting near Glolov’s feet, the big man said dismissively, “Old man, shut your beak and step aside.
You don’t get a say here.”
The Turkish leader laughed loudly and then casually pointed at Gao Yang, saying, “Tell me, which organization are you with?”
Gao Yang was angry but kept his cool and said lightly, “We are not from ‘that’ organization, we are here on a contract.”
The West Asian laughed again and said, “Mercenaries?
Seems so.
I didn’t expect you to be mercenaries.
Do East Asians fight too?”
Gao Yang lifted his head and squinted, shouting loudly, “Buddy, don’t look for trouble, go your own way.”
The West Asian, finding amusement and completely ignoring Gao Yang’s strongly worded warning, continued with interest, “I’ve never seen an East Asian mercenary.
Which country are you from?”
Gao Yang’s face darkened as he said, “It’s none of your business.”
The West Asian shrugged and said, “We are mercenaries too, but, we are all men, and we’ve fought many battles.
Look at us, buddy, then look at your group: women, an old man, and all soft-boned.
Are you sure you’re mercenaries?”
After saying that, the West Asian spoke another sentence in Turkish, causing another round of uproarious laughter; he then turned and gestured at Gao Yang with his finger, shouting, “Coward, move aside and let us through, we are off to fight a battle.”
Gao Yang felt his anger rising rapidly, but he decided to endure.
It was unwise to start a fight over a few words when surrounded.
Li Jinfang and Eileen, both of whom had fiery tempers, were almost dead with rage.
Gao Yang was also very angry, though he felt he couldn’t retaliate.
However, giving the command to move the car was really hard to utter.
Just as Gao Yang took a deep breath, preparing to order the car be moved, he heard the big Russian shout, “Wait, you blocked our path.
You can’t just let it go so easily.
Hey, old man, nice gun, give it to me and I’ll forgive you.”
Glolov smiled subtly and said, “Can’t do that.”
The big man took a couple of steps forward and snarled at Glolov, “You should realize that it’s no big deal to kill someone here.”
Then the West Asian also laughed, “Exactly, I notice that their guns seem quite good, quite fancy, SCAR, HK, oh, what’s this gun?
I’m very interested.
Hey, kid, give me your gun, I want to check it out.”
The West Asian pointed at the Blade of Satan partially visible on Gao Yang’s back, beckoned with his hand, and motioned for Gao Yang to hand him the gun.
Gao Yang drew a breath and said, “Buddy, I apologized to you because we truly did block the way, so I will apologize to you guys.
It’s a matter of decency, but being polite doesn’t mean I’m weak, so don’t trouble me!”
The West Asian laughed heartily, struggling to catch his breath, and after he finished, he curiously said to Gao Yang, “So, I’m really scared, and I really want to know, what could you possibly do if I do cause you trouble?”
Gao Yang smiled and said, “You don’t trouble me, I won’t trouble you.
But if you do, I will kill you!” (To be continued.
