528: Chapter 524: Good stuff, let’s take it from him.
The incoming force was only a small troop; the fight was hardly challenging.
After happily hanging up the phone, Gao Yang said over the radio, “Guys, latest update, our enemy is just a small force.
Although we’re not yet clear on the exact number, we can be sure they don’t have the capability to surround us, so there’s no need to widen our reconnaissance.
Head back to camp and prepare to move the injured.”
Although there wouldn’t be any danger, the temporary camp was already compromised, a change in location was definitely needed; it just wasn’t urgent.
The rest was just a matter of details: assign people to carry the wounded, take the indispensable items, discard everything that’s non-essential.
By the time everyone from the lookout posts returned, the preparations for movement would be nearly complete.
With just an order, they could leave at any moment.
The enemy force on the cliff couldn’t come down, and Gao Yang had no intention of going up.
Neither side fired any more shots.
After a standoff of over half an hour, Gao Yang suspected that the people on the cliff might have already retreated.
By then, Gao Yang had the patience to keep waiting.
He wanted to know why they were attacked by a unit, but more importantly, he wanted to completely eliminate the threat from this unit.
Otherwise, although moving wouldn’t be too difficult, having an ever-present tail was hardly ideal.
After not too much time had passed, Li Jinfang came to Gao Yang with a directional mine.
Upon seeing Gao Yang, Jinfang whispered, “Brother Yang, everyone from the lookout posts has pulled back and is on standby at camp.
Everything is packed up, and anything that could identify us has been destroyed.
We’re ready to go whenever.”
Gao Yang nodded and said, “Let’s wait for more news to see what Uriyangko says.
We should be able to leave for good today.
If possible, it’d be best to just make a clean getaway.
Curtis, I don’t want to stay in this godforsaken place for another day.”
Li Jinfang silently aimed his gun down the slope and murmured, “Brother Yang, what did Uriyangko say?
After we leave the jungle, are we heading straight for America, or what’s the plan?”
Gao Yang shook his head, “Don’t know yet.
We’ll see how they arrange things.
I’d like to go straight to America, but that’s kind of difficult.
We can’t dump our guns, and it’s not realistic to take a commercial flight back.
Not sure if Little Donnie can arrange something.
We’ll discuss it when we meet.
As long as we can leave the jungle, anywhere is fine.”
Li Jinfang thought for a bit, then whispered, “If we can leave directly, are we going to do that, or are we going to seek revenge before we go?
We weren’t involved this time, but Frey and Lucica got hurt so badly.
Are we going for revenge?”
Gao Yang replied solemnly, “Revenge is a must, but we can’t rush it.
Let’s wait until everyone’s wounds heal.
And don’t worry too much about it; Ivan’s been itching for revenge.
He’s far more ruthless than us.
But, you know, revenge is something you’ve got to do yourself.
I plan to wait and see when Ivan is going to make a move, then we’ll join him.
Frey took a bullet for me this time; I’ll feel bad if I don’t get payback for that.”
Li Jinfang nodded repeatedly, “Right, Frey, that kid, sigh, what a guy.
When we get back, we’ll really treat him well.
I’ve got to thank him properly.”
Gao Yang curiously asked, “I should be the one to thank him.
What are you thanking him for?”
Li Jinfang shook his head, “Nothing, don’t worry about it.
Let’s talk later; now’s not the time for chatting.”
Having waited a while, the sun climbed higher and the temperature also rose significantly.
Gao Yang looked through the scope again and said, “The temperature is getting higher.
My thermal imager needs a substantial temperature difference to identify targets.
If the sun goes any higher, the thermal imager will be useless.
When the thermal imager fully fails, that’s when we will pull out.”
After finishing, Gao Yang whispered into the radio, “Prince, is your thermal imager still working?
Let me know when yours stops working.”
Eric sounded puzzled over the radio, “Stop working?
Why would it stop working?
I have new batteries, so you don’t need to worry about the thermal imager failing.”
Gao Yang was even more perplexed and asked, “If the ambient temperature rises, making it close to the human body’s temperature, can the thermal imager still detect the target?”
Eric chuckled and replied, “Buddy, unless the background temperature is the same as the human body temperature, the thermal imager won’t fail.
However, that scenario is impossible.
So it doesn’t matter if the background temperature is higher than the body temperature.
Humans are endotherms; as long as there is a difference between the human body and background temperatures, even if it’s lower than the background temperature, you can still differentiate the human target.”
Gao Yang felt like he and Eric were talking at cross-purposes.
He understood the principles that Eric was explaining, but the problem was that the small thermal imager attached to his gun wasn’t that powerful.
At night, distinguishing a warm human body against a cooler background was easy, but in a high-temperature environment, identifying a cooler human body required a significantly more capable infrared thermal imager, and such devices were too big to mount on a gun realistically.
Confused, Gao Yang thought that the only possibility was that the thermal imager Eric used was better than his and could be used in all weather conditions.
His own thermal imager worked best at night.
They both were used to their own thermal imagers, which was why they found each other’s statements somewhat puzzling.
Li Jinfang thought the same, and he said to Gao Yang in a serious tone, “Brother Yang, your thermal imager isn’t a piece of junk either, but why do I feel like yours is not as good as Prince’s?
Shall I go and check out what he’s using?”
Gao Yang nodded repeatedly and said, “Go take a look at what model of thermal imager he’s using.
I also think that what he’s using is better.
I can’t leave here right now, so go check it out for me first.”
Li Jinfang quickly left, and after a few minutes, he returned at a brisk pace, but with a frustrated look on his face he said, “Brother Yang, I checked, and his thermal imager is just a bit bigger than yours, but there isn’t a single letter on it.
You can’t make out the brand or model at all.
Also, Rabbit went to see as well, and he couldn’t figure it out either.”
Gao Yang replied irritably, “If you can’t figure it out, just ask him.
It’s not like it’s a secret he’d refuse to reveal, right?”
Li Jinfang’s face creased with worry as he said, “I asked, and it’s not that he’s unwilling to say it — it’s that he simply doesn’t know.
Prince said that Nate bought it for him, and never told them the model or brand.
He claims he doesn’t know, although whether that’s true or not is another matter.”
Gao Yang smacked his lips and said, “It’s definitely not a common product; that’s the good stuff that Nate got his hands on.
I’ll ask Nate, but I’m worried he might not be willing to tell or even if he does, we still might not be able to get it.
That’s entirely possible, just like my gun barrel; what good is money if there’s no place to buy it from?
No, we need to figure out a way to get a clear answer.
Heck, I’ve decided, I need to figure out how to swipe Prince’s thermal imager!” (To be continued.
