Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 313 - 313 311 Lightning Flash
313: Chapter 311: Lightning Flash 313: Chapter 311: Lightning Flash The gunshot rang out, and a man fell, but the sound of the gun was completely covered by the thunderous explosion.
Even Gao Yang, the shooter, didn’t hear the gunshot, let alone the noise made by the man as he fell to the ground.
Gao Yang aimed for the head.
Even though he was aiming only with the light provided by the lightning, he still chose to aim for the more difficult target, the head, because only by doing so could he ensure a kill with a single shot.
Moreover, at a distance of just over forty meters, the accuracy of the AK47 was sufficient.
Most importantly, even if he missed, Gao Yang wasn’t worried, because in these conditions, no one would realize a bullet had whizzed by them unless they were hit.
The cover of the thunder meant those people sheltering from the rain under the trees were completely unaware that someone among them had been killed.
They were still hugging their arms, shivering.
Although it was the hottest time, the rainwater was really cold.
Even under the same tree, not all places offered equal shelter from the rain; naturally, people would choose spots where less rain fell.
This provided Gao Yang with an opportunity.
Gao Yang didn’t expect to knock out every single one of the people seeking shelter from the rain since they were ultimately too close to each other; however, he still hoped to delay being discovered by them for as long as possible.
Gao Yang aimed his gun at a man sitting with his back against a tree trunk.
This person was sideways to him and was the furthest back among those people.
When the lightning silently counted to six, Gao Yang fired, and his target tipped over to one side onto the ground.
Taking a light breath, Gao Yang aimed at the outermost person.
He used the same technique, firing at the moment the thunder sounded.
However, after firing and waiting to see the silhouette again, Gao Yang realized that his target hadn’t fallen.
But it didn’t matter, the man hadn’t noticed a bullet had just passed not far from him.
Gao Yang aimed again and fired another shot; this time, his target fell.
The third one now, Gao Yang silently counted, then aimed at the fourth target.
There wasn’t much to say about the setup this time, but as the fourth target fell, a lightning bolt flashed, and Gao Yang saw someone seeming to walk over to the fallen person.
That person might not yet have realized what happened, but the moment they bent down to pull the fallen one, they would understand everything.
Gao Yang shifted the gun and held tight to the trigger, sweeping out bullets with the gun held horizontally; having missed the chance for precise shooting, he resorted to sweeping fire instead.
More than twenty bullets were fired in just a few seconds.
Without moving, Gao Yang immediately replaced it with a new magazine and continued to sweep out bullets.
After emptying the magazine again, Gao swapped in the last full magazine and crawled to the side before raising his gun to survey the results of his sweeping fire.
Fighting for so long, this was the first time Gao Yang held down the trigger without release, emptying all the bullets in the magazine in one go, and after emptying two magazines consecutively, steam began to rise from the hot gun barrel, quickly cooled by the cold rainwater.
Even after Gao Yang had emptied two magazines, no one had fired at him.
Using the lightning, Gao Yang saw that no one was standing under the tree anymore.
He glanced quickly and didn’t see clearly, but he guessed that at least seven or eight people had scattered, running and firing at the same time, although they were all shooting in the wrong direction.
The poachers who could still run hadn’t noticed Gao Yang, but by then they had already fled, and Gao Yang no longer had a chance to shoot.
In the pouring rain, even with extremely dazzling flashes of lightning, his visibility was heavily limited by the rain curtain.
Anything beyond fifty meters was almost the limit of what Gao Yang could observe.
After those people ran off, he quickly lost sight of them.
Gao Yang did not intend to check under the tree, but just as he was about to leave quietly, a bolt of lightning struck the ground, and he watched wide-eyed as a figure vanished under the blinding column of light.
The overly bright light left Gao Yang temporarily blinded; after the flash of white, he could see nothing but darkness.
As his vision slowly returned, his ability to think also gradually came back to him.
Running around on the open grassland with a gun in a thunderstorm was nothing short of a lightning rod.
Remembering that he was carrying both a double-barreled shotgun and a rifle, and was clad in items made of metal and electronics, Gao Yang immediately dismissed the idea of standing up and quickly crawled toward the shelter of a large tree.
Though he had known since childhood that one should not hide under a tree during a thunderstorm, it was certainly worse to stand in an open field, especially encased in metal.
While a large tree might also attract lightning, hiding underneath it was still better than being a human lightning rod in an empty space with metal all over.
Two trees, one large and one small, were almost touching each other.
Gao Yang crawled to the smaller one as fast as he could.
Once under the canopy, he could clearly see nearly ten people lying helter-skelter underneath it.
Apparently, his shooting had been quite effective.
When Gao Yang got under the tree, one of the men who was injured but not yet dead saw him.
However, Gao Yang was quicker to react; before the man could aim his gun at him, Gao Yang shot him dead.
At least four other people under the tree were still alive.
To ensure his safety, Gao Yang began shooting at those who appeared to be moving.
By the time he fired the third shot, he heard a cry of despair.
The crying made Gao Yang hesitate, but then he thought of the dead people of the Akuri tribe, and his heart hardened.
Those scum did not deserve any pity.
Whether for his own safety or for the innocent souls of the Akuri tribe, they had to die.
“When you were killing those people from the primitive tribes, did they beg for mercy?
What did you do?
Bastards, go to hell.”
Although he thought they probably couldn’t understand him, Gao Yang still shouted loudly, which made him feel a bit better.
But just as he was about to shoot again, he heard someone shouting in English.
“Don’t kill me, please don’t kill me, I don’t want to die!”
After a brief pause, Gao Yang didn’t shoot.
Instead, he quickly crawled toward the two people who were still moving.
One of the remaining two had been shot in the back, with the bullet going through his lung — he was sure to die without a finishing shot.
Gao Yang took the man’s rifle from his hands, threw it aside, and left him alone.
The other had taken a bullet in the left side of his abdomen.
He was clutching his stomach with both hands, screaming desperately at Gao Yang in a mix of English and a language Gao Yang couldn’t understand.
