Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 272 - 272 270 Strolling Through a Hail of Bullets
272: Chapter 270: Strolling Through a Hail of Bullets 272: Chapter 270: Strolling Through a Hail of Bullets Frey had not died.
As he mistakenly rolled toward the corner of the wall, he caught a glimpse of a figure lunging at him from the corner of his eye, followed by two explosions.
By the time Frey realized someone had shielded him from the power of two grenades and that was why he hadn’t died, he pushed away the person clinging to him, and then he saw a familiar face, Mehdi, who had been on his left since the attack began.
Mehdi was as good as dead.
Though he wore a bulletproof vest, the shockwave from the blast at such close range was enough to take his life, not to mention that a piece of shrapnel had pierced through Mehdi’s neck.
Frey looked at Mehdi, face to face with him, somewhat stunned.
He placed a hand on Mehdi’s shoulder, his lips moving but unable to produce any sound.
Watching the terrified Frey, Mehdi cracked a smile, and as blood surged from his mouth, he said, slurred, “This is our war; of course, we should go first…”
Mehdi could not finish his sentence because he died.
Frey and Mehdi got along pretty well, but their relationship was not very close, mainly because Mehdi was more than twenty years older than Frey, old enough to be his father.
Their age gap meant a significant generational divide, not to mention with Mehdi’s limited experience, Frey found it hard to truly connect with Mehdi on a life level.
So, Frey had Mehdi as his second-in-command only because Mehdi was of a venerable age with sufficient authority, and indeed, he was quite adept at using a rocket launcher, but that was all.
Seeing Mehdi die before him, realizing he sacrificed himself to block the grenades for him, Frey’s fear of death subsided, replaced by as much fury as he had previously felt fear.
Frey pushed Mehdi aside, pulled an M67 grenade from his chest, and, limited by the angle, couldn’t throw the grenade from the bottom of the building up to the third floor.
Thus, as Frey pulled the pin, he started to run backward, and after he had covered a few meters and could see the shooting port on the third floor, he hurled the grenade upwards with all his might.
Once the rocket launcher squad reached the base of the building, the enemy upstairs couldn’t threaten Frey and his squad with their guns anymore.
So the enemy on the third floor continuously threw grenades downstairs, causing at least nine casualties among the rocket launcher squad with the first round of grenade attacks.
The reason Frey only encountered two grenades was that the building’s defenders were too few and their supply of grenades was limited; after throwing two rounds, no more new grenades came forth.
Whether it was the sniper from behind, or the assault team about to storm the bottom of the building, in an instant, they directed their firepower towards the shooting ports of the third and fourth floors.
Although this did little to stop the enemy from throwing grenades, their suppression gave a raging Frey a stage for a performance.
With a grenade in hand, its pin removed, Frey walked casually through the bullet-ridden battlefield as if strolling through a baseball field, while the constant gunshots and blasts sounded like the cheers and shouts of the audience.
Frey took a few steps forward and tossed a grenade with the posture of a baseball pitch into one of the shooting ports on the third floor.
He didn’t worry for a second that the grenade would fail to enter and blow back on him.
As soon as the grenade left his grasp, Frey immediately took two steps forward, removed the pin of another grenade, and tossed it into the adjacent shooting port.
With each grenade Frey threw, an explosion erupted inside the building.
Just as Frey was about to throw the fourth grenade, he noticed that the once silent shooting port on the first floor had flared up again, and the assault team, which was nearly upon it, started to fall.
Frey bent his left knee, slapped the grenade in his right hand with his left, and forcefully swung the grenade towards a shooting port that was over twenty meters away at a very tight angle.
The grenade bounced off the sandbags beside the shooting port, and then rebounded into the room where the enemies were shooting.
The explosion that followed meant the shooter inside was truly done for.
Considering the distance of over twenty meters, the heavy M67 grenade, and the throw into a small opening of about ten centimeters that bounced into an interior shooting port, Frey was quite pleased with his achievements.
So, he raised his hands high and shouted with excitement, “Yeah!”
Just as Frey had raised his hands and started to cheer, he saw another shadow rushing toward him, after which he was heavily knocked to the ground.
Then, Frey felt a heavy smack on his helmet.
“Are you fucking insane?!”
After a roar beside his ear, Frey was dragged across the ground by the arm.
He looked up to see Gao Yang, hunched over, furiously dragging his arm towards the corner of the wall.
“Boss, was that move just now cool or what!”
“Cool your mom!
Don’t waste the life that others have exchanged for yours with their own lives, you idiot!”
Gao Yang angrily roared at Frey again, then threw Frey down by the window stacked with sandbags, and after snatching a hand grenade from Frey, he yelled at the people who were desperately trying to move the sandbags blocking the window, “Move!”
After Gao Yang threw a hand grenade inside and waited for the explosion, he immediately said, “Push it open, push it open quickly.”
Behind them, Glolov was firing the machine gun, suppressing any possible incoming bullets, while Gao Yang and the others only took a few moments to push aside the sandbags stacked against the patio doors.
After they’d made a hole big enough for a person to pass through, Li Jinfang made a sign and then leaped in with one jump.
Once Li Jinfang had entered the building first, he soon shouted, “Clear!”
Gao Yang grabbed Frey, who was still stunned on the ground, and roared, “Give me a hand.”
After joining forces with Bruce to throw Frey through the building’s window, Gao Yang grabbed his shotgun, leaped into the window, and then immediately swung the gun barrel from side to side to guard against any potential attacks.
After waiting for Glolov to be the last one to jump through the window, Gao Yang shouted at Bruce, “Keep an eye on Little Fly, this idiot has lost it!”
Frey, who had been dazed, snapped to attention upon hearing Gao Yang’s call and scrambled up from the ground.
After grabbing his HK416, he shouted loudly, “I’m not crazy, I’m fine, I just got a little excited, but I’m okay now, all good!”
Hearing Frey’s shouting and putting him aside for the moment, Gao Yang glanced and saw that most of Squad One had already entered the lobby on the first floor.
He quickly made a few hand signals, indicating that they should head for the stairs in the middle of the hall.
The first floor was a very spacious lobby, occupying about a thousand square meters.
They could also see that on the other side of the hall there were two small doors still open, and the doors were not blocked.
This building used to be a shopping mall in Bosaso, but it had been abandoned for many years.
Inside, it was empty and dilapidated, occupied by the people of Bosaso as a dwelling.
However, after Mokadi made this place his stronghold, those who lived inside had long fled, leaving only broken possessions and household trash everywhere.
After calming himself, Gao Yang whispered, “Watch out for hand grenades, we’ve advanced quickly, and it’s very likely the enemy hasn’t had the chance to escape yet.”
Li Jinfang immediately nodded, then used hand signals to tell the row that had attacked the building with them, instructing Squad One and Squad Two to follow them upstairs, while Squad Three stayed on the first floor to guard against any possible enemy entry from the back door.
After taking a couple of deep breaths, Gao Yang waved his hand and waited for everyone to disperse before approaching the stairs to the second floor in a circular fashion.
When Frey moved forward again with his gun raised, Gao Yang quickly ran over, grabbed Frey’s clothes and yanked him back, snarling, “Damn it, get to the back.
If you lose it again, I’ll shoot you myself!”
Fearing Frey might charge forward like a lunatic again, Gao Yang sternly warned him.
After angrily finishing his warning, Gao Yang gestured with his hands and prepared to force an attack upstairs.
Frey didn’t explain why he had lost his mind, but he really wanted to personally go upstairs and wipe out every last bastard defending this building, to honor Mehdi who had died saving him and to repay the sacrifice of Mehdi and the others.
After being warned by Gao Yang once more, Frey just said quietly, “Brother Yang, give me a few hand grenades.
I used up all mine just now.
Don’t worry, I won’t waste my life.”
When Frey called him Brother Yang instead of Boss as usual, Gao Yang knew Frey was serious.
He hesitated for a moment and then said quietly, “Who has hand grenades left?
Gather some for Little Fly, and be quick about it!” (To be continued.
