Chapter 1206 - 1206 One Thousand One Hundred and Eighty-Nine The Medical Soldier Family
1206: Chapter One Thousand One Hundred and Eighty-Nine: The Medical Soldier Family 1206: Chapter One Thousand One Hundred and Eighty-Nine: The Medical Soldier Family Gao Yang waved his hand and said in a deep voice, “Are you a military doctor or a combat medic?”
Albert smiled and said, “My duty is that of a combat medic, but my skills are that of a military doctor.”
There are differences between a military doctor and a combat medic, both in terms of their duties and their skill levels.
In America, combat medics are called medics, in Huaxia they are referred to as health service personnel.
Although the titles vary, their responsibilities are consistent; combat medics must accompany combat units into action, providing emergency care to wounded personnel on the battlefield.
Besides their medical duties, combat medics also carry a full infantryman’s gear and can take on the combat duties of a regular soldier.
The primary professional skill of a combat medic is to save lives.
However, a combat medic is first and foremost a soldier, not a doctor, so they don’t need highly advanced medical skills.
A combat medic just needs to be able to perform the most basic first aid, like stopping bleeding and basic anesthesia on the battlefield, to keep a wounded soldier alive, and that would qualify them as a competent combat medic.
Military doctors generally hold the rank of technical officers.
Unlike combat medics who rush to the front lines to fight and save lives, the military doctors who accompany units are tasked with staying back at field hospitals or at a makeshift frontline medical post to treat the wounded, providing complex and formal medical care.
Therefore, military doctors are first and foremost doctors, except these doctors serve in the military.
Simply put, military doctors and combat medics differ in terms of where they are positioned on the battlefield, their responsibilities, and their skill levels.
Evidently, skill requirements for a military doctor are much higher than for a combat medic.
A military doctor can act as a regular doctor, but a regular doctor can’t necessarily become a military doctor, because the environment a military doctor must work in is far harsher.
They don’t operate in sterile operating rooms, and the people they save are not patients under anesthesia but rather wounded soldiers struggling and crying out in pain on the battlefield.
A regular doctor would lose their nerve in such an environment, let alone be able to save anyone.
As for combat medics, it is even less likely that a regular doctor could take on that role.
Strictly speaking, it’s harder to be a combat medic than a military doctor.
Combat medics must be prepared to risk their lives.
When they see a comrade injured, they must rush out into the bullet rain if needed to drag the wounded back and provide immediate treatment.
This single requirement already disqualifies the vast majority from the ranks of qualified combat medics.
Gao Yang and his colleagues are used to calling Bruce a military doctor, but in fact, Bruce’s duties were truly that of a combat medic, and right now, what Gao Yang needs is a combat medic, not a military doctor.
Albert’s reply greatly satisfied Gao Yang.
Having the duties of a combat medic but the skills of a military doctor to provide higher-level treatment was excellent.
The only issue was whether Albert possessed the resolve that a combat medic should have.
Gao Yang looked into Albert’s eyes and said gravely, “So, are you a combat medic?”
Albert’s smile faded and he solemnly said, “I am!
No one has ever had the grounds to question that.”
The question was straightforward, and so was the answer.
Both men were serious with regard to this matter.
One must have the resolve to sacrifice themselves for others to be considered a true combat medic.
Bruce was a qualified combat medic, which is why he died.
Gao Yang has always been generous with money when it comes to talented people.
As for a combat medic who must build a protective barrier for everyone in Satan with their own life, Gao Yang is willing to spend any amount of money.
Gao Yang nodded and looked at Albert seriously and said, “If you are a qualified combat medic, you can name your price for the position.
Whatever amount you think you deserve, just say it, and I won’t refuse.”
Albert curled his lips and said, “We are not life-and-death comrades in arms, but I am a combat medic, so you can rest assured about my professional integrity.
I’m quite happy with my current job, but I won’t say no to a job that’s thrilling and pays well.
Hmm, if it’s long-term, then a monthly salary of thirty-five thousand dollars I think.
It has to be at least ten times my current salary to be worth leaving my police job to venture around the world with you.
What do you think?”
Gao Yang nodded and then suddenly asked, “Let me ask you a question.
How much did you earn that time you went to San Diego?”
Albert held up two fingers with a smile and said, “Twenty thousand dollars, just one day, earned twenty thousand dollars, and I didn’t do much.
It’s quite a profitable business, right?”
Gao Yang nodded and said, “The price you’ve quoted is unreasonable, I don’t think it’s appropriate.”
Albert shrugged and said, “Then there’s nothing to talk about.
I think I’m worth that price.”
Gao Yang was showing off, yes, he was indeed showing off.
Gao Yang smiled, shook his head, and then said seriously, “If you’re a qualified medic, then you shouldn’t be priced at that.
Buddy, thirty-five thousand a month is too low.
I’m offering you a salary of a million a year, one million per year.
However you like to get paid, that’s how I’ll give you the money.
Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, as you wish, and that’s after laundering the money, so you won’t need to launder it again or pay taxes.
We have professionals who will handle all that and then give you the money.”
Albert was astonished, he looked at Gao Yang and said, “A million annual salary?
And that’s after taxes?
Buddy, you’re not pulling my leg, are you?
Man, don’t tell me you’re joking.”
In America, an annual salary of a hundred thousand is considered high income.
For a policeman, the annual salary is about forty to fifty thousand dollars.
This income is not low in the US across various professions, but it certainly isn’t high either, it’s just moderately below average.
An annual salary of a million dollars is absolutely at the highest tier of earners.
Gao Yang offered a temptingly high price that could buy a soul, but of course, it wasn’t without conditions.
Looking straight into Albert’s eyes, Gao Yang said word by word, “I’m not joking.
Follow me, and as long as you do everything a medic should do, then you’re worth that price.
If your behavior disgraces the profession of a medic, I’ll kick you out immediately, and you won’t get a cent.
If you do something you shouldn’t, I’ll kill you.
I think you understand what I’m saying.”
Albert replied with all seriousness, “You’re hiring me as a medic, and like I said, no one has ever questioned my qualifications as a medic, not in the past, nor will they in the future!”
Gao Yang nodded and said, “Good.
Now I have a few more questions, and then we can proceed to the next step.”
Albert shrugged and said, “For the sake of a million annual salary, go ahead and ask.”
Gao Yang spoke solemnly, “Please tell me how your combat ability is.
It’s a very important question.
Can you skydive?”
Albert smiled and said, “I have seven years of service experience, six of which I served as a medic in the Israeli Golani Brigade.”
Gao Yang’s eyes widened in surprise and said, “You’re an Israeli?
You’re Jewish?”
Albert nodded and smiled, “Yes, Jewish.
Well, my grandfather brought the family from Finland to what is now Israel in 1946.
In 1948, he joined the military, was assigned to the Golani Brigade, and took part in the War of Independence.
He then fell in the Second Middle Eastern War of 1956.
When he was in Finland, he had been a doctor, so from the day he enlisted, he served as a medic, up until the day he died.
Then there was my father.
He enlisted in 1961, and he too was a medic but in the Airborne Soldiers, of the 202nd Paratrooper Brigade’s 771st Reconnaissance Battalion, the elite of the elite and the hero among heroes!
He fought in the Six-Day War, and then during the Yom Kippur War of 1973, he was sent to the Warsaw Outpost in the Sinai Peninsula.
Their combat unit was surrounded, but out of the thirty-six people in his unit, seventeen were severely wounded, seventeen were lightly wounded, and only one was completely unharmed.
The only one killed was my father!”
Proudly, Albert raised a finger and loudly said to Gao Yang, “Albert’s family tradition, as a medic, I can die, but my patients cannot die on me!”
After speaking with pride, Albert rubbed his face with his hands and continued, “Then there’s my brother, six years older than me.
I was born in 1970, he in 1964.
He too was part of the 202nd Paratrooper Brigade.
In 1982, during the first year he enlisted, he experienced the Fifth Middle Eastern War.
He could have lived, but as a medic, in order to drag a casualty back, he was torn to pieces by shrapnel on his eighteenth birthday.”
After he said this in a relaxed tone, Albert pointed at his nose and smiled, “In 1988, I turned eighteen, and I enlisted that year.
Both my father and my brother were from the 202nd Paratrooper Brigade, so I joined them.
I insisted on completing the basic training for both a medic and a paratrooper.
However, there was a problem later; I was faced with either being kicked out of the army or transferred to another unit if there was one willing to take me.
Luckily, the Golani Brigade liked taking in problem soldiers that others wouldn’t take, so I was transferred from the 202nd Brigade to continue serving as a medic in the very unit my grandfather had served in for six years.”
After speaking slowly, Albert took a breath and said solemnly, “I thought I would serve as a professional soldier until I died or got old, but then something happened.
In 1993 my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and she died in 1995.
Before she passed away, I was granted leave to see her, and she took my hand by her bed and said, ‘Arthur, our Albert family has already served our country loyally, you’re the last man of the Albert family, Israel won’t perish, but the Albert family must continue.
You can’t die anymore, you need to get married and have a child, and you’d better not make your wife a widow while she’s still young.”
After finishing the story, Albert shrugged at Gao Yang, sighed, and said with a look of reminiscence, “After speaking to me, my mother passed away that very night, and when I returned to the unit, I immediately applied for discharge.” (To be continued.
