Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 1195 - 1195 One Thousand One Hundred Seventy-Eight Mechanical Sights
1195: Chapter One Thousand One Hundred Seventy-Eight: Mechanical Sights 1195: Chapter One Thousand One Hundred Seventy-Eight: Mechanical Sights Gao Yang finally fulfilled Yelena’s wish to see a musical on Broadway.
Broadway is the name of a street, but there are so many famous theaters on it that Broadway has become synonymous with opera.
Gao Yang had no interest in opera or musicals, but since Yelena liked them, he had no choice but to accompany her regardless of his own preferences.
There were different shows playing at each Broadway theater.
Gao Yang didn’t like any of them, so it didn’t matter what they watched.
Eventually, Yelena made her pick, and she chose Les Misérables.
Gao Yang didn’t like musicals, especially tragedies, but at least the singing was quite pleasing to the ear, allowing him to listen from beginning to end.
The only thing that upset him was when Yelena began to sob uncontrollably, while he felt nothing.
It wasn’t that Gao Yang was heartless; it was just that he had seen too many real-life tragedies to be moved by the plot of a play.
Yelena had already taken a long vacation, and the day after the musical, Gao Yang took her on Morgan’s plane to Seattle.
All members of Satan went to visit Bruce’s tombstone without fail.
It wasn’t a group mission; if they had time, they’d visit Bruce and Lucica; if not, that was fine too.
But nobody was absent, and after a long while, everyone wanted to pay a visit.
Lucica’s belly was slightly bulging, as she was over four months pregnant and beginning to show.
Lucica was very happy to see her friends after a long time.
After visiting Lucica, there was nothing much else; those who wanted to go home went home, heading back to their respective businesses.
Glolov, Frey, and Tommy stayed in Seattle.
After spending a night there, they would leave for New York from Seattle.
Afterward, Glolov and Natalia planned to vacation in Hawaii; Tommy and Vita in Serbia; and as for Frey, he hadn’t decided where to travel yet, but he was sure to go somewhere with his mom and wife.
Cui Bo had nowhere to go, so he decided to go with Gao Yang to the gun show in Los Angeles, and Li Jinfang would also go to the gun show first, with Taylor sharing the same interest in the gun show.
As for Andy He and Jansen, they would leave Seattle directly.
In the afternoon, Gao Yang and others who were heading to Los Angeles arrived first at Portland with Morgan.
Before going to Los Angeles, Gao Yang had to make a trip to Portland first.
His rifle grip had a small hole in it, which didn’t affect its use much, but Gao Yang still wanted to find Jack to replace the grip as soon as possible.
Taylor also needed to repair his gun; he was using the rifle Bruce left behind.
During an ambush in Aleppo, the lower receiver of his rifle was damaged.
Although Taylor had discarded his rifle to pick up another one during the fight, he eventually brought the damaged rifle back after retreating to Aleppo Prison and then brought it all the way back home.
There was another matter for Gao Yang in Los Angeles, which was to check out the military doctor recommended by Number Thirteen.
Gao Yang had gotten the doctor’s information from Morgan, and besides attending the gun show, an important task was to scout this military doctor.
By the time they left Portland airport, it was already getting dark, but Gao Yang and the rest didn’t rush to the hotel, instead heading straight to Allian Mossen Studio to get their guns repaired by Jack.
Morgan went back home by himself, and Gao Yang and the others had already coordinated with Jack.
Although Allian Mossen Studio was closed, Jack would be waiting for them.
When they met Jack, it was already past eight in the evening.
Jack was the same as ever, unchanged.
When he opened the door and saw Gao Yang and the others, Jack opened his arms wide and exclaimed, “Brothers, long time no see, how are you all doing?”
Upon seeing Taylor, Jack pointed at him, looking emotional, “Oh, brother, are you doing okay?”
Taylor bumped fists with Jack, then gave him a tight hug before speaking with mixed emotions, “I’ve been back for a few days, but I just went to visit Bruce today, oh, Lucica is doing well too, both Bruce’s child and mother are fine.”
Jack nodded and said, “I’ll also go visit them when I have time.
Alright guys, come inside and talk.”
Once inside Jack’s lounge, as always, the only thing Jack could offer Gao Yang and the others was cold beer.
After handing out beers to everyone, Jack shook the bottle in his hand and said loudly, “Let’s talk business first; bring out your damaged guns for me to inspect.”
Gao Yang opened his gun bag and took out the Blade of Satan, then said gravely, “I need to replace the grip; it’s got a small hole from a bullet.
I’ve tested it, and there’s no change in the action, the scope is as accurate as before, so I don’t think it needs recalibration, just a grip replacement should do.”
Jack picked up Gao Yang’s rifle and after a careful look, he said loudly, “You’re a shooting expert, as long as you’re sure the accuracy isn’t affected, it’s all good.
The grip and the stock are one piece, to replace one means replacing both.
I’ll need to make a new stock for you, which will take some time.
What do you think, any adjustments needed for the stock and handgrip areas?”
Gao Yang thought for a moment, then shook his head and said, “No, none, the ergonomics are very good.
This gun is like a part of my body, it doesn’t need any adjustments.
The only issue is the mechanical sights.”
Jack looked at the mechanical sights, then asked, “What’s the issue with the mechanical sights?
Is there a problem with the accuracy?”
Gao Yang gave a wry smile and said, “No, it’s not an accuracy issue.
How should I put it, I’ve never actually used mechanical sights before and never had the chance to.
But now I want to enhance my ability to shoot using only mechanical sights without any auxiliary aiming equipment.
The notch sight I’m using now seems completely ineffective beyond three hundred meters – I can’t shoot accurately with the mechanical sights at distances beyond that.
I think I need more practice, but I also wonder if there’s a mechanical sight that’s more suitable for long-distance shooting.”
Many people have started calling Gao Yang the Gun God, but he doesn’t feel like he lives up to that name.
Leaving everything else aside, just the fact that he can’t accurately shoot targets beyond three hundred meters without a scope makes him feel there’s a lot lacking in his shooting skills.
Gao Yang really wants to make up for his weaknesses.
He’s practiced many times but once it exceeds three hundred meters, when he uses the notch mechanical sights to aim, he can’t achieve precise hits.
Beyond three hundred meters, especially after four hundred meters, a human-sized target appears even smaller than the aimer through the notch sights, making it impossible for Gao Yang to aim accurately.
During World War II, many snipers used iron sights on their rifles for long-range kills, like Finland’s Simo Häyhä, who could use a Mosin-Nagant rifle with its iron sights to hit enemies up to seven hundred meters away – the Mosin-Nagant’s iron sights being notched.
Gao Yang thinks if others can do it, he definitely can too but after trying many times, he finally reluctantly admitted that what Simo Häyhä could achieve, he might not.
Gao Yang wants to solve his problem; after hitting a technical plateau, he wants to try if changing his mechanical sights might help.
Now, there are mainly two types of mechanical sights: the notch type and the aperture type.
Mechanical sights on old guns before World War II are mostly notch-type, and many currently used main battle rifles also have notch sights, for example, the Type 81 and AK47.
The advantage of the notch sight is that it has a wide field of view, convenient for quick target acquisition, but the downside is lower precision.
Representative firearms with aperture sights include the M4; NATO now mainly uses aperture sights, which are more precise in long-distance shooting but have the disadvantage of a narrow field of view, making it inconvenient for quickly locating and shooting targets.
Gao Yang’s rifle is equipped with notch sights, as he specifically requested, because he’s adept at gunmanship.
Usually, when he uses mechanical sights, it would be within three hundred meters, or even within two hundred meters.
At this range, he doesn’t miss, so he wanted the notch sights for their ease of rapid target acquisition.
That’s why he had Jack install notch sights specifically for him.
But now, Gao Yang’s needs regarding mechanical sights have changed; he needs the ability to accurately shoot at longer distances using mechanical sights.
This is a perfect opportunity to have Jack change his mechanical sights while fixing the rifle.
After hearing Gao Yang’s request, Jack pondered for a moment but finally nodded and said, “Okay, switch to aperture sights, and you’ll need to switch to a multi-scale aperture sight.
You’ll have to try it out yourself to see which type suits you best before changing.”
Gao Yang nodded and said, “Okay, but I plan on going to the gun exhibition in Los Angeles tomorrow, when shall I test it?”
Jack looked at Gao Yang and laughed, “The Los Angeles gun exhibition?
I was also planning to go.
We could go together.
If you’re not in a hurry to use the gun, I’ll fix it when we get back.”
Gao Yang smiled and said, “I’m not in a hurry.
Let’s go enjoy the exhibition for a few days.”
Jack laughed heartily and said loudly, “Great, let’s head to the exhibition together tomorrow.
Oh, and shooting at long distances with mechanical sights is a skill.
It’s very different from using optical scopes, I think you need a teacher to instruct you.
I know someone who is very skilled at long-distance shooting with mechanical sights.
You know, he can hit a one-square-foot target at five hundred meters.
He has all types of mechanical sights equipped on his guns.
If you’re interested, we can visit him; it’s just a bit far, he’s in Colorado.”
Gao Yang exclaimed in amazement, “That good?
We must pay him a visit.
Um, wait, when shall we go?”
Gao Yang felt a bit of difficulty as he was planning to travel to Europe with Yelena after Los Angeles, and a detour to Colorado would certainly delay them for another two days.
Just then, Yelena said with a smile, “Colorado?
I like it there, we definitely must go.
Darling, shall we go to Colorado?” (To be continued.
