Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 1088 - 1088 One Thousand and Seventy-One Despair
1088: Chapter One Thousand and Seventy-One: Despair 1088: Chapter One Thousand and Seventy-One: Despair Casualty evacuation takes up quite a bit of space, but transporting the bodies of the dead soldiers is much more space-efficient because the corpses can be stacked.
There are no helicopters specifically for transporting wounded soldiers or dead bodies; those that do are the same helicopters that brought in the troops, so the capacity is still very tight.
The living always take priority over the dead; in order to leave enough capacity for the survivors, the bodies of the fallen could only be piled up layer by layer.
Watching the bodies being loaded onto the helicopters, Gao Yang didn’t quite know how to feel.
There was a sense of relief for having survived another bitter battle, some fear about whether his own time would come, and there was also a not very strong feeling of sorrow.
In war, how could there be no casualties?
Once you’ve chosen this path, nobody can complain about anything; it’s pointless and useless.
Gao Yang looked around and noticed a prisoner with a white turban and black robe covertly kicking a body while he and others were lifting it, just as the soldier who was watching the prisoners transport bodies happened to turn his head to look at someone else and didn’t see the prisoner’s action.
Of course, if the guards had been watching, the prisoner wouldn’t have dared to kick.
Gao Yang didn’t say anything, simply pulled out his pistol and shot the prisoner in the head who had kicked the body.
Gao Yang’s gunshot startled everyone, then all eyes turned towards him.
The distance was somewhat great, and his first shot missed.
Being watched by the crowd, Gao Yang felt a bit embarrassed, aimed his pistol again, and shot the prisoner.
The gunshot sounded, and the prisoner fell, his head burst open.
Gao Yang, without saying a word, put his pistol back in the holster, waved his hand to signal everyone to continue working.
No need to explain anything or warn the prisoners about anything.
There’s limited capacity, and no room for these prisoners on the evacuation helicopters.
Gao Yang counted a total of seventy-four bodies.
Excluding Satan’s men, there were over one hundred sixty people from the Syrian side involved in the combat; seventy-four died in battle alone, plus nineteen seriously injured.
Not counting the lightly wounded, the casualties in this battle exceeded more than half.
The bodies were stacked into three helicopters.
When Gale was about to put Alcohol on the last helicopter transporting bodies, Gao Yang stopped Gale and said gravely, “Alcohol goes on our helicopter.”
After waiting for the third helicopter to take off as well, Gao Yang nodded at Taylor, saying, “Time’s about up.
Contact Sea Eagle and see if we can reach them.”
Taylor nodded, picked up the wireless handset, and said solemnly, “This is Punisher, calling Sea Eagle.
If you receive this, please respond, over.”
A moment later, Taylor, with the headset raised, said solemnly, “Sea Eagle is in contact, they’ll enter the bombing area in about four more minutes.”
Gao Yang breathed a sigh of relief and said, “They’re quick.
Finally, they’re loading bombs efficiently.
Tell them, prepare to bomb.”
After that, Gao Yang said on the intercom, “Worker Bee, Toad, prepare for evacuation; we’re going to drop bombs.
Stay as far from the impact point as possible and be ready to pull out quickly upon notice, over.”
“I’m Worker Bee, Boss, isn’t using laser-guided bombs a bit wasteful?”
“Not wasteful, just prepare for evacuation, over.”
After finishing that, Gao Yang continued, “Captain, just leave the minimum number of personnel needed for enemy suppression.
Now, gather a helicopter’s worth of personnel.
Have we identified the prisoners yet?
If the enemy isn’t very important, don’t bother bringing them back.”
“We’ve identified them, the prisoners’ identities are important; we need to bring them back alive.”
After contemplating for a moment, Gao Yang said, “Agreed to evacuate with the prisoners, have your men start pulling out now, over.”
With the arrangements made, Gao Yang waved at Taylor, saying, “First, go back the way we came and throw a couple of big bombs down on the enemy there, go.”
Gao Yang did not follow Taylor.
He shouted, “Gather the prisoners, it’s time for them to hit the road.”
Farouk, along with some men, came over, escorting four prisoners who had taken a beating in a room, each appearing battered and bruised, staggering as they walked, being dragged and pulled to the side of the landing field.
Gao Yang called out to Farouk loudly, “Who are these people?”
Farouk approached Gao Yang and whispered, “We don’t know yet, but these people should be important.
We found a lot of documents they didn’t have time to burn, some CDs and flash drives, too.
These people had guards; I think we should keep them.”
Gao Yang waved his hand and said, “Take the prisoners and leave first.”
“No, I’ll be the last to go.
As the commander, I cannot…”
The ground shook violently, followed by a loud explosion that cut off Farouk’s words.
Right after that, Taylor’s grave voice came over the radio: “Package delivered.”
Then another explosion, two laser-guided bombs had hit the ground.
Taylor quickly ran back.
Gao Yang pointed towards a building on the other side and without stopping, Taylor ran straight to the building.
As Taylor ran off into the distance, Tommy and Li Jinfang also retreated back.
Gao Yang shouted at them loudly: “Set up defenses here, we’ll leave after Postman takes out the other side.”
Li Jinfang and the others moved next to Alcohol, where there wasn’t much left to do, just waiting for Taylor to guide another two bombs onto the enemy’s reinforcements before they could leave.
People guarding inside the building started to come out.
When those hired by Satan came out from the building, Gao Yang noticed that quite a few had minor injuries.
Clown was bleeding from a wound on his arm, and Li Qiu was limping.
Wild Man and his group of four gathered together, just like the Firestorm Mercenary Corps established by Alcohol, although they were among the first to enter the open space and had gone through a tough battle.
They were much luckier, with only Eagle Claw suffering a minor injury.
Everyone who came out gathered around Alcohol.
The Wild Man sat down next to Alcohol’s body with a sigh and said, “Buddy, your luck was really bad.
You should have waited; Rubik’s Cube wouldn’t have died.
You really didn’t need to rush to save him.
Ah, it’s pointless to say this now.
Anyways, pal, you were unlucky, just unlucky.”
Ludwig walked out with a few of Scimitar’s men, limping as well.
Standing next to Alcohol’s body, he glanced at the corpse and then smirked, muttering, “Those motherf*****s, buddy, farewell.”
Gale’s breathing became more and more rapid.
Just then, another helicopter came down.
Gao Yang waved his hand and said to Farouk: “Take your men with the prisoners and withdraw.”
Farouk shook his head: “No, let Scimitar and Dark Arrow go first.”
Ludwig gestured to his men: “Get on the plane, let’s go, head back.”
Yake also waved to his men: “You guys go first, I still have things to deal with.
Go on, head back.”
When they arrived, Scimitar and Dark Arrow each had their own helicopters; one helicopter couldn’t fit both teams at full strength, so some from Scimitar and Dark Arrow had to cram into a helicopter with the special forces.
Now that they were to return, the teams also squeezed into one aircraft.
Still, this time around, a single helicopter could fit all personnel from Scimitar and Dark Arrow, plus a few from the special forces and the prisoners.
After those with light injuries were evacuated, their numbers were even fewer.
Just then, two more explosions rang out, as the laser-guided bombs detonated on the other side.
Watching the helicopter take off, Yake let out a sigh and said, “What a pity, Alcohol.
Ah, forget it.
Gale, don’t act like a woman over there.
We all have our day, and you know that.
Stand up, collect yourself.
Live your life as usual.
Go check on Rubik’s Cube and Aimer later.”
Gale didn’t say a word.
He stood up from the ground, walked over to Number Thirteen, took his rifle that Thirteen was holding, then turned and approached the gathered prisoners.
Lifting the rifle, he opened fire on the prisoners.
No one stopped Gale.
As he sprayed bullets, the prisoners scattered, screaming and trying to flee.
After a moment of firing and emptying the rifle’s magazine, about fourteen or fifteen prisoners had escaped.
Those nearby raised their weapons and coldly shot down the prisoners Gale hadn’t hit, one by one.
In a few moments, no prisoners were standing, only those shot but not dead were lying on the ground, wailing or cursing loudly.
Gao Yang held his pistol as well.
He fired quickly, and of the prisoners Gale had missed, three had their heads blown off by him.
Gao Yang, still holding his pistol, didn’t continue firing at the wounded and not-yet-dead prisoners, leaving that task to Gale.
Gale tossed his empty rifle on the ground and pulled out a pistol from his waistband.
Holding the gun, he walked up to a cursing prisoner, raised his gun, and shot him dead.
He would take a step, fire a shot, take a step, fire a shot, giving each surviving and inert prisoner one in the head.
After emptying one magazine, he loaded a new one and continued shooting.
After going over all the prisoners with his pistol, Gale stopped moving.
Gale, standing among the pile of prisoner corpses, glanced over the bodies and then at Alcohol’s corpse not far away.
He extended his left hand and fiercely wiped across his face.
After walking two steps towards Alcohol’s body, he suddenly stopped, threw his arms open towards the sky, and let out a scream filled with despair.
After his scream, Gale suddenly lowered his head, took a few heavy breaths, then lifted his head again.
He looked at the others, who were about a dozen meters away, and then murmuring to Gao Yang, he said, “I, I can’t, I don’t know…”
Gale’s voice wasn’t very loud, and Gao Yang didn’t catch it clearly.
He took a step forward and asked loudly, “You don’t know what?”
Gale didn’t answer Gao Yang but instead gave Gao Yang a look of despair and raised the pistol to his own head, and fiercely pulled the trigger.
