Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 1080 - 1080 One Thousand and Sixty-Three The Sorrow of a Warrior
1080: Chapter One Thousand and Sixty-Three: The Sorrow of a Warrior 1080: Chapter One Thousand and Sixty-Three: The Sorrow of a Warrior The enemy had two machine gun emplacements creating a crossfire; one was to the south, and the other to the north.
The one that Gao Yang had to take out was the machine gun position to his south.
Gao Yang didn’t even know the exact location of the machine gun emplacement, not just its orientation, but he also didn’t know the relative position of the machine gun muzzle and the outer side of its fortification.
It’s somewhat complicated to explain; in simple terms, the machine gun was hidden deep inside a hole, and to get the bullets into the firing port of the machine gun, he had to find the right angle.
The shot Gao Yang had to make was extremely difficult; he needed to first find an angle to fire at the machine gun and take out the one on the south.
However, by doing so, he would expose himself to the northern machine gun.
The enemy’s two machine gun positions created overlapping fields of fire and could cover each other.
Gao Yang’s plan was to dart out, take out one machine gun emplacement, not caring about the one behind, fire a shot, pull back, and then move out again to take out the other machine gun.
Gao Yang was about to leap out and fire when someone suddenly yelled, “Wait!”
Blue Shield rushed forward, holding a bulletproof shield that was half the height of a person, and urgently said to Gao Yang, “I’ll cover your back!”
“Will it work?”
“It can stop a 7.62mm NATO bullet!”
“Are you sure?”
“Certain!”
Gao Yang nodded and said in a deep voice, “Okay, you take care of my back, change direction, hit the northern machine gun position first.
Once I fire, you pull back immediately.
Don’t worry about anything else, understand?”
Blue Shield nodded and replied, “Understood!”
Gao Yang changed his angle and stood back-to-back with Blue Shield.
After taking a deep breath, Gao Yang counted down in a deep voice, “3, 2, 1, go!”
His mind went blank; as he made his move, he had already roughly aimed at the enemy machine gun position.
Both eyes were open, but his focus was on the left eye.
Darting out, he visually searched and found he could fire at the shooting hole hidden beneath the building; then, he quickly shifted his attention to the right eye, which was lined up behind the scope.
He fired, then retreated.
Gao Yang didn’t bother to check if he hit his target, completely confident in his shot.
Dashing back, he turned around, only then to discover that Blue Shield had fallen to the ground, but Gao Yang showed no sign of concern.
He darted out again,
searched, aimed, and the enemy’s firing hole was very low.
Gao Yang squatted down, firing before he could finish squatting.
After completing the squat, instead of standing up, he leaned to one side, using the rebound force of his legs to throw himself slantwise onto the ground.
Number Thirteen and Li Jinfang waited on the side, each ready to drag Gao Yang and Blue Shield back to safety.
Having been grabbed by Number Thirteen by the shoulder, Gao Yang loudly ordered, “Don’t move!”
Lying on his side, Gao Yang sat up and fired another shot at the southern shooting hole he had just targeted.
It wasn’t that his first shot missed; it was that after killing the machine gunner, there was also an assistant gunner.
Gao Yang waited to take out the second one as well; otherwise, the assistant operating the machine gun would still be a significant threat.
After making the second shot, Gao Yang lay back on his side and loudly said, “Drag me back.”
Number Thirteen dragged Gao Yang back to safety.
Once Number Thirteen let go, Gao Yang immediately jumped up from the ground and darted out again, crouching low, and fired another shot toward the northern machine gun position, killing the assistant gunner in the cover as well.
Why did Gao Yang initially plan to hit the southern machine gun position, but after a few words with Blue Shield, decide to target the northern one first?
There must be a reason.
The tracers from the south emitted red light, while tracers from the north emitted green light.
And Blue Shield’s bulletproof shield could withstand the force of 7.62mm NATO bullets, which decided that Gao Yang had to take out the northern machine gun first.
The primary component of the luminescent material used in tracer rounds by NATO countries led by America is strontium, which emits a red light.
Therefore, NATO tracer rounds are red.
Soviet Russia’s tracer rounds use barium as the main component of the luminescent material, and barium burns with colors like green, yellow, and white.
However, Russian tracer rounds notably emit green light.
Having mixed with the machine gunner Glolov for so long, if Gao Yang still couldn’t distinguish between the types of machine gun rounds, that would be something to talk about.
So when he saw that the machine guns on both sides fired different colors, Gao Yang knew that the south was using NATO rounds.
By listening to the whistling of the bullets, he could tell they were 7.62mm and not 12.7mm or 5.56mm.
The northern side’s green tracers, without saying, were Russian rounds, plus the unique sound of the PKM, left no room for doubt that it was a 7.62x54mm R round.
The shield could block bullets from the south, but the northern bullets were more powerful, so of course, Gao Yang had to have Blue Shield protect his back, knocking out the northern machine gun position first.
That was the reason for changing his firing sequence.
After four shots, both machine gun positions fell silent.
Gao Yang roared, “Go!
Go!
Go!”
Gao Yang didn’t go to rescue himself; he urgently needed to monitor the northern machine gun position to prevent anyone there from making an appearance.
The southern machine gun position also needed urgent surveillance; having three or even more people inside the cover was normal.
It was essential to prevent someone from regaining control of the machine gun.
Jesse Lee, nicknamed the Smoothbore Gun, lay down next to Gao Yang and aimed at the shooting hole to the south.
It was so close that almost anybody from Satan’s men could use a rifle to blockade the shooting hole.
Andy He led his people out in a charge; they were going to rescue the fallen.
There were many soldiers hit by bullets.
After eliminating the enemy threat, those close to the wounded started to move, dragging back bodies and the injured.
“Bring back the wounded!
The rest continue the attack, take the target first!”
Although he was still aiming at the northern shooting hole, Gao Yang didn’t forget to command.
Soon, with the urgent sound of footsteps, those hit by bullets were brought back.
Gao Yang no longer needed to suppress the shooting hole at the north side; it was a waste of his skills to focus only on this target for too long.
Ludwig had already replaced him with one of his marksmen.
Gao Yang stood up, and as he turned around, he saw Li Jinfang dragging Peter back with one hand on his leg and the other on his arm.
Gao Yang bit his lip and said nothing.
Gale was dragging back Alcohol.
Once they returned to the safe area, Gale fell to the ground on one knee, followed by a piercing howl.
Alcohol was done for.
His right hip bone was entirely shattered, a large chunk of flesh above his thigh root was missing, and then, higher up, he was hit by another bullet, the right side of his abdomen was gone, two bullet holes combined into one, with his intestines spilling out from the right side of his lower abdomen.
But Alcohol wasn’t dead yet.
Peter wasn’t dead either.
His right leg was hit at the knee, completely broken.
Now Li Jinfang was holding his hanging lower leg; a large chunk of flesh was missing from the calf of his left leg.
It must have been the same bullet that hit both of Peter’s legs, striking his right leg, used as the supporting leg, breaking it, then passing through the calf of his left leg, leaving a gaping wound.
Cries of agony filled the air.
Andy He knelt down in front of Alcohol, opened his bulletproof vest to take a look, then stood up silently without saying a word, turning to leave.
“Stop!
Dragon Knight!
Save him, save him!
Please, save him!”
Gale, kneeling by Alcohol’s side, cried out loudly to Andy He, who was about to leave.
Gale was too agitated, so Gao Yang came over, pressing on his shoulder,
Andy He mumbled a few words, and after seeing the expression on Gao Yang’s face who stood beside Gale, he eventually squatted down again and took out a syringe.
Seeing Andy He’s action, Gale shook his head vigorously, saying loudly, “No, no, don’t brush me off, no, don’t do this!
Buddy, don’t do this, I beg you, really save him, don’t do this, don’t brush us off, Dragon Knight, please don’t do this, I’m begging you, please…”
The syringe Andy He took out was actually a placebo, and it was more to comfort Gale, but Gale knew this, and he hoped that Andy He would make a serious effort to save Alcohol, not just offer a placebo to brush him off.
In fact, Andy He wasn’t just brushing off Gale.
There are limits to human capability.
Alcohol was doomed, and Andy He couldn’t save him, not even a deity could.
While Gale kept pleading with Andy He, Alcohol, who lay on the ground with little strength left, suddenly reached out a hand and grabbed Gale’s arm.
“Don’t waste time, go save Rubik’s Cube.
Gale, listen to me, brother, bring back Rubik’s Cube and Aimer…”
Alcohol seemed to suddenly gather the strength to speak.
Andy He nodded to him, saying nothing, and got up.
He checked Peter, then the unconscious Rubik’s Cube, immediately kneeling beside Rubik’s Cube to start giving emergency care.
Gale looked at Rubik’s Cube and then at Alcohol, his face blank.
“Brother, I’m a goner, take them both back home.”
Alcohol’s voice was clear.
After saying this to Gale, he turned to look at Gao Yang, his voice trembling, “Boss, Gale has a violent temper, keep an eye on him for me, make sure he gets home alive.”
Gao Yang nodded, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of him.”
The color in Alcohol’s eyes quickly vanished, he squeezed Gale’s arm, turned his head with difficulty to glance at Rubik’s Cube lying nearby, and then lost all the sparkle in his eyes.
He died.
Gale knelt in front of Alcohol, motionless, just looking at Alcohol, then at Rubik’s Cube.
Gao Yang sighed, closed Alcohol’s staring eyes with his hand, and then went to Peter.
Peter’s leg was broken.
Li Jinfang stood beside him, holding Peter’s foot, holding his severed leg, a blank look on his face as he watched Andy He quickly stop the bleeding for Gale.
Gao Yang squatted beside Peter.
Peter’s facial expression was one of immense pain, but he didn’t make a sound.
He just lay flat on the ground, his eyes fixed on the leg that Li Jinfang was holding in his hands, swaying above his head.
Gao Yang couldn’t help but sigh.
Peter was a combat master, not many people on this planet could defeat him in hand-to-hand combat, but this was modern warfare, an era dominated by firearms.
Regardless of how heroic or invincible in hand-to-hand combat, a single bullet could end everything.
A talent beyond others, a lifetime of hard training, still could not withstand a bullet; such is the tragedy of warriors.
This is the tragedy of people like Peter and Li Jinfang; they were born in the wrong era.
