1072: Chapter 1055: The Ram, That’s How Tough It Is!
Using laser-guided bombs, combat personnel will not be able to be too close to the target area, and the buildings within the combat zone are very close, unable to land first and then guide the laser-guided bombs to bomb.
If bombing is carried out before parachuting, the dust generated from the explosion will last for a long time, and the dust will prevent parachuting, forcing combat personnel to land far away and initiate attacks from even greater distances.
However, there are significant advantages to bombing before attacking.
Not only can the bombs eliminate the threat imposed by two buildings, but the dust from the explosions can completely cover a large nearby area, rendering enemies without night vision devices combat-ineffective.”
After weighing the pros and cons, Gao Yang still decided to bomb first, then proceed with helicopter airdrops.
The main structure of the building is made of reinforced concrete, quite sturdy; a single laser-guided bomb might not guarantee destruction, and it’s very important to note that there might be basements in the buildings.
The targeting of the laser-guided bombs must be very precise, and two bombs per building are necessary to ensure destruction—ensuring that even if the building isn’t completely demolished, everyone inside it will be killed.
It would be best if Badadi were killed in the building, but even if Badadi wasn’t there, once the building threat is removed, using personnel to search and attack the surrounding buildings will be much safer and easier.
The great battle is imminent.
Gao Yang’s habit is to launch attacks at dawn when the enemy’s alertness is at its lowest.
But this time, he had to start the attack earlier.
Badadi liked to change hiding places frequently, and although it was not known if the Iron Wall Mercenary Corps was guarding Badadi himself, Gao Yang prepared the attack assuming Badadi was the target.
Thus, the total assault began at nine o’clock in the evening.
More helicopters stopped one after another on the apron, almost all flyable Mi-17s from Damascus were called in.
Two Su-24s were towed to the runway, the pilots were in place and ready to take off at any time.
Before the Su-24s, an An-26 transport plane will take off.
Personnel gradually lined up on the apron, everyone waiting in line according to their respective units.
This will be Syria’s first large-scale special operations in the true sense, from combat equipment, combat methods, to combat personnel—it’s all a special operation.
Gao Yang had a lot to attend to with departure time fast approaching; fully armed, and with his face smeared with camouflage paint, Gao Yang just stepped out from his office.
Gao Yang walked past the neat rows, glancing at young faces.
As Gao Yang walked by, those soldiers stood at attention the Syrian way, then puffed up their chests, watching as Gao Yang slowly passed by.
Those soldiers were all very young; one could see a hint of nervousness on their faces, excitement too, but not fear.
They were all waiting for the moment the order was given to board the aircraft.
Tonight, many are destined to die.
Fighting always results in death, and tonight will be a tough fight.
Most of these people have never been on a battlefield, a real special operations battlefield; in a sense, it’s not an overstatement to call them all recruits.
Leading a group of recruits who have never been to battle, to engage in such an important and harsh fight for their first mission, Gao Yang felt he must be crazy.
While walking, Gao Yang stopped in front of Peter.
Peter was at the front of the line of the Republican Guard Division Special Strike Force, next to Farouk.
Peter wore the same uniform as his trainees, but his uniform zipper was pulled very low, exposing the Breton top he wore underneath.
Seeing Peter’s Breton top, Gao Yang couldn’t help but smile, then he said to Peter in a low voice, “Are you sure?”
Peter gave Gao Yang a salute and said quietly, “Colonel, I am pleased to fight alongside you.”
Peter was ready, and he would follow all of Gao Yang’s orders, which was evident from the salute he gave to Gao Yang.
Gao Yang returned the salute, then continued to walk past all the rows.
Gao Yang intended to walk straight onto the plane, but now he felt that he should say something because, for many, there would be no chance to hear him say anything after tonight.
Gao Yang stopped in his tracks, handed his rifle to Number Thirteen, then walked back to the forefront in the center of the troops.
“You, tonight, some will die!”
Gao Yang’s shout was very loud and impassioned.
“Tonight!
You will face a test!
Your sweat, tears, and blood will prove their true value tonight!
Some of you will die, some will be injured, but know that your blood will be spilled for a worthy cause!”
Gao Yang understood that his words might be discouraging, but he couldn’t help voicing them anyway, pushing fresh recruits onto the cruel battlefield without giving them a chance to adapt.
It didn’t sit right with him.
But this is war.
Someone has to stand up and be prepared to die.
Gao Yang was not a decision-maker, he was an outsider, but there were words he wanted to say to these soldiers, to remind them that if they died, they died for their country.
Even though it was a civil war, these soldiers would die protecting their kin and thus their cause was just and honourable.
Justice and honour don’t belong to mercenaries.
It was precisely for this reason that Gao Yang couldn’t help themself but remind the soldiers of the meaning and value of their potential sacrifice.
“You are among the finest of this nation.
Just standing here attests to your worth.
Your fight will not only bring victory but also honour.
Most importantly, you’re fighting to protect your families, your people, to defend your right to exist.
You all understand what a victory for the Rebel Army would mean for you and everything you’re trying to protect.”
Gao Yang got somewhat emotional, his thoughts a little scattered.
He hadn’t planned to give a pre-battle motivational speech since, as a mercenary, discussing the significance of battle to soldiers fighting for their country seemed somewhat absurd.
It was an impromptu speech, unrehearsed.
Gao Yang soon found himself at a loss for words.
Then with a forceful wave of his hand, he shouted, “I will lead the charge to pave the way for your fight.
I will fight alongside you, and let me tell you, tonight, you will all become heroes.
Soldiers, it is an honour to fight with you.
Let us annihilate the enemy and bring victory home.”
After finishing, Gao Yang saluted and bellowed: “Victory is certain!”
There had been no rehearsals, but Gao Yang’s spontaneous performance greatly excited the soldiers, though they didn’t quite know how to respond to his rallying cry.
That’s when Ludwig raised his fist and yelled, “We shall water our glory with the blood of our enemies!
We are the sharp Scimitar, eager to gorge on the blood of our foes, victory is certain!”
Ludwig was set to lead the Reconnaissance Company of the Third Infantry Brigade and had been drilling his men through various exercises.
As it happens, those with sharp tongues often have a way with words.
Ludwig wasn’t just good at firing off snarky comments; seeing the situation go cold, he just blasted out a rallying cry.
Under Ludwig’s lead, the Third Infantry Brigade shouted in unison, “We shall water our glory with the blood of our enemies!
We are the sharp Scimitar, eager to gorge on the blood of our foes, victory is certain!”
With Ludwig’s rallying cry, the Reconnaissance Company of the Third Infantry Brigade might as well have been named.
If they struck terror in battle, future references wouldn’t be to just any Reconnaissance Company but to the Scimitar Company, with their rallying cry “We shall water our glory with the blood of our enemies,” making any further slogan attempts pointless.
Dani was the chief of the Intelligence Agency Action Team, but he would not engage in combat.
This tough battle was really not his to fight, so instead, it was Yake leading the Intelligence Agency Action Team.
With the Reconnaissance Company now having a slogan and a name, the Intelligence Agency Action Team definitely couldn’t be left out.
Yake raised his arm, yelling, “We are the Dark Arrow of the night, the messengers of death, victory is certain!”
It was challenging for the Intelligence Agency Action Team to shout slogans because, as part of the intelligence branch and structurally different from the regular army, they needed to maintain a sense of mystery.
Different from the army’s Special Forces in both mission and method, Yake had called out a slogan very fitting for an intelligence department action team.
Cloaked in mystery and hidden in darkness, dressed in black combat gear rather than camouflage, this small squad from the Military Intelligence Bureau can be called Dark Arrow.
Farouk was the highest-ranking officer of the Republican Guard Division.
Regardless of who the actual commander was, Farouk was the one to shout the first slogan.
Farouk couldn’t churn out a bunch of slogans as quickly as Ludwig or Yake.
His was simple, but uplifting.
“Born to battle!
With me, victory is certain!”
Independent Special Strike Force of the Republican Guard Division, this was the formal designation given by Marshall.
As for a nickname or a name earned in battle, that had yet to be determined.
Farouk didn’t want to establish a nickname for this unit; that was Marshall’s prerogative.
To encroach upon a moment of glory belonging to Marshall would be inappropriate.
Shouting slogans, saluting, although there had been no rehearsals, the three diverse units had smoothly completed the entire pre-battle mobilization process.
Gao Yang lowered his hand from the salute, then swung it forcefully and shouted, “Attention, all units!
Board the planes!
Prepare to take off!”
Gao Yang wasn’t just all talk; lowering his arm, he quickly returned to those waiting for him.
After taking the rifle handed to him by Number Thirteen, he strode towards the An-26 parked on the runway.
Gao Yang was to parachute into the battlefield first, covering Taylor as he guided on the ground, and also to conduct close reconnaissance of the combat zone.
Gao Yang, Li Jinfang, Tommy, Taylor, Jansen, and Number Thirteen—the six of them would be the first to enter the battlefield.
They would parachute onto an open space about four thousand meters from the combat area, then infiltrate the building most likely harboring the Iron Wall Mercenary Corps.
As the top Commander, Gao wasn’t accustomed to directing from the rear command post.
He preferred being on the front lines, undertaking the most dangerous tasks, executing reconnaissance himself, and making judgments based on firsthand information—that was Gao Yang’s style of command.
As a Commander who also provides critical firepower, he was irreplaceable, his style inimitable—this was Gao Yang, this was Ram, the first Marksman of Ram, so awesome, so unyielding!
