Chapter 455: Chapter 268: Will You Come Back to the Country with Me?
Meng Wanning’s naive voice warmed Chen Cheng’s heart.
"You’ve also been busy all day, aren’t you tired?"
Meng Wanning shook her head, "Taking care of you, I don’t feel tired."
The two returned to the room, and Meng Wanning immediately got busy, boiling water, preparing towels, while Chen Cheng sat on the sofa, his lips curved into a smile.
The once famous actress, now cooking and washing for him, this feeling made him cherish the person in front of him even more.
When the water was ready, Meng Wanning carefully poured the hot water into the basin, tested the temperature, then crouched down to remove Chen Cheng’s shoes and socks.
"Maybe I should do it myself," Chen Cheng said, looking at those delicate hands with a sense of heartache.
Meng Wanning looked up at him with a sweet smile, "I like taking care of you like this."
She placed Chen Cheng’s feet into the warm water, gently rubbing them.
"Master, is the water temperature okay?" she looked up and asked with concern.
"Yes, it’s just right."
As she washed, Meng Wanning spoke, "Master, from now on you’ll be responsible for earning money outside, and I’ll take care of our little home here. Does that sound good?"
Looking at her serious expression, Chen Cheng couldn’t help but laugh, "You, still playing your role, who has ever heard of an actress doing house chores?"
"An actress is still human," Meng Wanning gently massaged Chen Cheng’s toes, "Besides, I’m also a woman who wants to take care of her man."
"I heard from your master that back in the troupe, you had everything done for you, and you never had to lift a finger."
"That was the past, this is now."
Meng Wanning lifted her head, her gaze firm, "I just want to live a good life with you now, the past doesn’t matter anymore."
Chen Cheng helped her up, "Stop busying yourself, come sit."
Meng Wanning leaned against his shoulder, feeling an unprecedented sense of security. Chen Cheng suggested, "Shall we wash together?"
Meng Wanning smiled and dipped her own small feet into the not-too-large basin.
Her feet, fair and petite, contrasted sharply with Chen Cheng’s larger ones.
Large and small, they squeezed together. Chen Cheng teasingly rubbed his feet against hers, causing Meng Wanning to giggle, retract her feet, and just as she tried to lift them, Chen Cheng caught them.
"Master, they’re still not dry~"
"That’s quite alright."
...
...
At five in the morning, Chen Cheng woke from his gentle dreams.
His hand was a bit numb.
Honestly, he hadn’t gotten up this early in over a month, and felt completely disoriented.
He slipped out of bed, tiptoeing as he dressed.
"Master, are you up?"
"Did I wake you?" Chen Cheng smiled.
Meng Wanning grabbed the mobile phone from the bedside table to check the time, "No... no."
Her voice still carried the lingering laziness of sleep; she rubbed her eyes, propped herself up, and the soft covers slid, revealing her smooth shoulders.
"Are you leaving?"
Chen Cheng walked back to the bed, "Yes, you go back to sleep."
"I’ll see you out."
As she spoke, Meng Wanning threw off the blanket, got out of bed, wearing her slippers, and walked up to Chen Cheng to help straighten his collar.
Chen Cheng enjoyed this tender care, "Aren’t you upset with me?"
"Why would I be upset with you? You spent the whole night with me." Meng Wanning fastened his shirt buttons, "I know you’re busy, just coming to see me is great."
She lifted her head, the sweetness in her eyes and brows not any less than the night before.
A warmth filled Chen Cheng’s heart; as he was about to lean in, Meng Wanning turned her head away, "I haven’t even washed yet."
Eventually, the farewell kiss landed on her forehead.
"Have more rest, and I’ll come to see you when I’m free."
"Okay."
Meng Wanning clung to Chen Cheng’s sleeve as she walked him to the door, watching him get into the car, and only when she could no longer see the taillights, did she return to the still warm bed.
Chen Cheng’s scent was still in the air, she greedily took a deep breath, her body turning towards the side of the bed where Chen Cheng had slept, as though he had never left.
On the other side, in Da Lao’s car.
"Mr. Chen, everything at the small western-style house is arranged." Chen Donghai also had an early start, driving and speaking, "Last night you were drunk, and stayed at Mr. Jin’s."
Chen Cheng yawned twice.
"Ms. Meier will arrive at 7."
"Okay, got it." Chen Cheng leaned back on the headrest, closing his eyes for a rest.
...
...
Unsettled by Chen Cheng’s overnight absence, Xiao Meier felt anxious.
She called Jin Baogen last night to confirm Chen Cheng was okay.
As the orchestrator of the entire incident, Jin Baogen naturally covered for Chen Cheng, claiming that Chen Cheng was helping him entertain some friends and had drunk too much, staying over.
Unable to sleep all night, Xiao Meier still followed her usual habit of bringing Jin Baogen breakfast.
Just getting off a taxi, she carried two insulated containers, heading towards the small western-style house.
"Miss Xiao, good morning," the butler bowed slightly.
"Is godfather up?"
"He is," the butler respectfully took the containers from Xiao Meier, "still feeding the birds."
Xiao Meier nodded and walked straight to the garden.
The morning sun streamed through the leaves and cast mottled shadows on the ground.
"Godfather."
Jin Baogen put down the tweezers, smiling as he turned around, "You’re here."
"Yes. Where’s Xiao Cheng?"
"He’s still sleeping." Jin Baogen’s voice was steady, "I was discharged from the hospital yesterday, and a few old friends came to see me. I had Chen Cheng help me with a few drinks."
"Heh, this kid’s tolerance is really improving! He managed to help me out quite a bit."
"His tolerance, if he really could hold his liquor, he wouldn’t be so drunk that he couldn’t return home." Xiao Meier muttered.
Jin Baogen obviously heard this muttering, but he pretended not to hear it, "What delicious thing did you make me today?"
"I stewed some cornmeal and ginseng pigeon soup; remember to have some later, it’s rejuvenating." Xiao Meier was visibly frustrated.
Her gaze drifted towards the second floor, where the guest rooms were located.
