Mated To The Cruel Prince -
Chapter 543: Let The Matter Go
Chapter 543: Let The Matter Go
Anya’s heart raced as she waited for Oma’s response. She knew she was treading on thin ice, but she was willing to take the risk if it meant saving Isaac. Once Isaac recognized her efforts in saving his life, it would be enough to smooth their strained relationship. Anya did not dare to hope, but perhaps, Isaac might finally see that she was the one destined for him.
Once Isaac comes to his senses, she would forgive and welcome him into her life. After all, everyone makes mistakes. It was not his fault that the monster Maxi ensnared him in her perfectly orchestrated web. But all of this ends today and this was the first step.
Oma’s gaze softened slightly, a flicker of concern passing through her eyes. "What kind of danger?" she asked, her voice less stern now, betraying a hint of worry.
Anya took a deep breath, grateful for the opportunity to finally be heard. "It’s about your daughter-in-law, Maxi," she explained, choosing her words carefully, especially when Oma lifted a questioning brow. "I don’t know what you think you know about Maxi, but she’s not who she portrays herself to be. She’s much more dangerous than we thought. Issac is in over his head, and if we don’t act fast, he could be in serious trouble."
"Care to elaborate on what you mean by Maxi isn’t who she portrays to be?" Oma asked, her tone serious.
Anya didn’t hesitate, relieved to have Oma’s attention. "Maxi is not just a Fae, she’s more than that. No, she’s worse than that..." She took a deep breath, squaring her shoulders, ready to reveal the truth.
Reaching into her dress, Anya pulled out a sheet of paper with the words written on it: "Maxi is in reality a dark Fae horse shifter, and it’s shocking because she’s Prince Aldric’s famous war horse."
She explained, "I would have elaborated more in person, but I made a deal with my source not to disclose this sensitive information to anyone else. However, I couldn’t just sit still and watch Issac get in trouble."
Anya anticipated the silence that followed. This revelation was too significant to be taken lightly. She observed Oma silently, sensing the weight of her contemplation.
Anya was confident that Oma wouldn’t let this matter slide. If there was anything Oma cherished more than her own life, it was her children, especially Issac. She would protect him with her life.
Anya smiled, realizing that she and Oma would have to join forces to confront and ultimately defeat Maxi, sending her where she belonged — six feet under. Just because Maxi was part horse shifter didn’t negate her dark Fae nature. It had been challenging to unravel her half-Fae heritage, but with the help of her new friend Sonya’s incessant babbling and further research on Maximus, Anya discovered that the horse harbored dark Fae blood. As long as Aldric kept it in check, no one in Astaria had spoken about it.
Anya considered taking this information to the guards or some higher authority. The mention of "dark Fae" was enough to get her the attention she wanted. But she knew her words would carry more weight than a written paper. Plus, if the situation escalated, she would have to implicate Sonya as her source. Anya had made a deal with the Fae, promising not to "say" a word to anybody. However, she cleverly interpreted this to mean verbal communication, not actions. This was why one had to be cautious with the wording when dealing with Fae; Anya had found a loophole, after all.
Anya anticipated Oma’s next step. The concern would deepen in her eyes as she asked, "What do you propose we do?"
Ready with her plan, Anya would share with Oma the ideas she had been formulating on how to lure Maxi away from Issac and capture her. Anya had been diligently spying on Aldric’s castle and receiving correspondence from her partner in crime, Sonya. It was evident that Maxi was practically glued to Issac’s side; they were hardly ever seen apart. No wonder Maxi was able to manipulate him so easily; she hardly gave him any space.
Oma’s voice finally broke the silence, and Anya held her breath, waiting in anticipation. "When you told me you had something to say to me, I thought you were here to apologize," Oma said.
Anya’s head snapped up to look at Oma, her eyes wide with incredulity. Wait a minute, this response wasn’t what she expected.
"What are you talking about?" Anya asked, her confusion growing even deeper.
As Anya processed Oma’s unexpected response, she couldn’t help but wonder if Oma had even read what she had written. Surely, if she had, she wouldn’t be this calm. Oma should be hysterical, deeply concerned for her son’s safety in the hands of that dark Fae horse shifter. At this point, Anya questioned whether Oma was even literate, capable of reading at all.
Oma slowly advanced towards Anya, her expression inscrutable, the tension thick enough to suffocate. When they were face to face, staring each other dead in the eyes, Oma’s words cut through the silence like a blade. "How dare you assault my son and try to play the victim?"
Anya gasped, startled by Oma’s accusation. She hadn’t seen that coming, and it shocked her so much that she involuntarily took a step back. The incident had happened so long ago that she had even forgotten about it, never imagining that Oma would bring it up, let alone know about it.
"H—how..." The question slipped from Anya’s mouth before she could stop it, and she realized her mistake. It sounded as if she were admitting to the crime.
Oma’s expression turned sinister as she spoke, her voice laced with accusation. "You should have been more careful when you were speaking with my son right outside that door."
Anya’s memory flashed back to the day she had come to advise Issac about choosing Maxi as a fiancée. She gasped, lifting her hands to her mouth in disbelief. Oma had known about that incident all along? No wonder she had stopped communicating with her family. This must be the reason for her anger. As she had suspected, Oma’s love for Issac ran deep, and she wouldn’t let this matter go unanswered.
