Mated To The Cruel Prince
Chapter 424: Maxi Left

Chapter 424: Maxi Left

As soon as Anya and her mother left, Oma gestured to Isaac with her chin, directing him towards her room. "Follow me."

Kayla sensed the tension between her mother and brother and attempted to speak up, but Isaac subtly shook his head, silently advising her not to interfere. Confused, Kayla was unaware of the underlying issue between the two of them. She was the only one in the family who remained ignorant about Maxi’s true identity.

Once upstairs, Oma turned her back to Isaac as he entered the room and closed the door behind him.

Oma faced him, her eyes filled with restrained anger. She demanded of Isaac, "Now tell me the truth about Maxi."

Isaac opened his mouth to speak, but Oma interrupted him, raising her hand to silence him. "Don’t even think about hiding the truth from me now. Earlier, Maxi revealed herself as a horse shifter, but she didn’t mention anything more. I saw her eyes, Isaac, they were completely black, like an endless void."

Oma already had suspicions about Maxi’s true nature, but she needed confirmation from her son. She wanted to hear the truth from his own lips.

Guilty, Isaac averted his gaze. He had no idea why Maxi decided to tell his mother the truth, but Oma had already caught a glimpse of her primal form - there was no hiding it anymore.

"Issac?" Oma called his name, and silence fell between them for a long moment. Her expression softened as she approached him, saying with a gentler tone, "Just tell me the truth, please."

Reluctantly, Isaac turned to his mother, guilt and pain flickering across his face. With a bitter smile, he confessed, "Mama, I didn’t mean to keep it from you, but I did it for your safety and hers." He took a deep breath, then continued, "She’s a dark Fae, mother."

Oma flinched as though she had been physically struck. She stared at Isaac, wide-eyed, for a long time before taking a shaky breath. "May the gods help me." She brought her hands to her mouth, trying to process the shock. Her mind was spinning, and nausea rose in her throat.

"Mother—" Isaac tried to reach out to her.

But Oma flinched away, glaring at him with anger.

"What were you thinking, Isaac? She’s a dark Fae, for crying out loud!" Oma burst out, no longer concerned about her voice carrying beyond the walls of the room.

"Trust me, I had the same thoughts, Mother. You scolded me for disrespecting a female - now you know why." Isaac concluded with a wry smile.

Oma ran her hand through her disheveled hair, utterly shaken. Nothing had ever rattled her as much as this. Where would she even begin? What could she do?

She looked up at her son, determination in her eyes. "You have to send her away."

A slight tic appeared on Isaac’s chin. "No."

"What?" Oma paled, her eyes widening in disbelief. She stepped closer to her son until they were face to face. "Did you just say no, Isaac? Isaac, for crying out loud, she’s a dark Fae. Feelings may come and go, but if they find out— We would be executed."

Oma choked on her own words as realization hit her. "By the gods, you want to marry a dark Fae!"

Isaac’s expression didn’t deny it, and Oma was not only shocked but also enraged. "Wake up, Isaac! You would bring ruin upon this family! I love and respect your choices, but this one is unacceptable!"

"I am not changing my mind about Maxi," Isaac said firmly, his jaw set stubbornly.

"Issac!" Oma stumbled back, suddenly feeling dizzy. She looked up at her son, searching his gaze for any hint of dishonesty. But there was none, and it took her breath away.

"No." It couldn’t be.

"Yes." It was.

She shook her head, confused. "That can’t be. Dark Fae are cursed. They don’t have mates. They gave up any possibility for companionship in their pursuit of power. That has never—"

"Been recorded?" Isaac finished for her, his head tilted to the side. He smirked sardonically. "History has made it clear that those in power tend to keep secrets that could tear the kingdom apart. We are not the first to make this discovery, and they must have realized it was better to keep their mouths shut."

In that moment, Isaac opened up to his mother, recounting how he first met Maxi and her role as Aldric’s steed, Maximus. By the time he finished, Oma was pale and trembling with fear and disbelief. To think she had a professional killer in her home and had even entertained the idea of her as a potential daughter-in-law. The gods must truly hate her, for why else would they subject her to this trial?

"The heavens above!" Oma exclaimed, wiping her clammy palms across her face. There were too many revelations in such a short time, and they left her reeling. Barely above a whisper, she asked, "What are we going to do now?"

"We do nothing, mother. Things were going well when you didn’t know, so we’ll keep it that way." Isaac concluded.

But that remark made his mother’s head snap up, and she hissed at him, "So you planned to bury the truth forever?"

"If necessary, yes. It was for your safety and for the sake of this family. But now that you know, I suppose it’s better that it came to this." Isaac replied.

His mother huffed in frustration, realizing he was right. Mates were highly revered in the Fae realm. Interfering with a pair could be seen as defying the will of the gods. If anyone were to discover their mate bond, perhaps Maxi would be allowed to live. The only problem was finding someone patient enough to listen and not immediately kill her upon learning the secret.

"Issac, you do understand that this changes everything—" Oma started to say.

Her words were cut off as the door swung open, revealing the tearful Kayla who had been eavesdropping the entire time. Shakily, she informed them, "Could you both please stop? Maxi has left!"

"What?" Oma exclaimed.

Without wasting a moment, Isaac rushed up the stairs that led to his room, pale. Finally, he understood. This explained the panic and emptiness he had been feeling for a while now.

But when he reached his room, Kayla’s words rang true. It was empty, and Maxi was gone.

No.
