Mated To The Cruel Prince
Chapter 272: The Spy At Aldric’s Side

Chapter 272: The Spy At Aldric’s Side

"My Queen, you have a visitor," Fae Queen Maeve’s handmaiden announced with her head lowered in courtesy.

Queen Maeve lifted her face from the mirror, looking out through the open window, her brow raised questioningly, "This late? I am about to go to bed. Can’t it wait until tomorrow?"

"I believe it’s urgent and there might not be another opportunity like this one. She wants to meet you now, my queen."

"Hmmmm," The Queen hummed before waving to the servants who had been removing the ornament in her braided hair and dressing her up for the night to leave, "Bring her in." She ordered.

Her handmaiden retreated, but not without bowing her head, only to return moments later with a Fae who wore a cloak, concealing her identity.

"My Queen, here she is," The maiden announced, gesturing to a figure who stepped out from behind her and came to kneel before the Queen.

"Your majesty, it is I, your loyal servant," The Fae said, finally lowering the hood to reveal a familiar face.

The Fae was no other than Rosalind and the Queen rose from her seat, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

"My child," Queen Maeve came over and helped Rosalind up to her feet, her eyes filled with adoration, "It has been a while indeed. Tell me how have you been?"

Rosalind answered, "This humble servant is doing fine and now she comes bearing good news."

"That is good to hear."

Queen Maeve’s lips curled up in delight and she signaled with her gaze to her handmaiden to get them refreshment. The Fae Queen should have entertained Rosalind in the receiving room or in an outdoor setting, but she couldn’t expose her, after all, the Fae was a spy she planted at Aldric’s side.

"Come sit, child," The Queen took a seat, permitting Rosalind to sit across from her, "Now tell me all that is to know. What has that brat been up to since his return?" Queen Maeve leaned towards the round table between them, eager to get the information she needed just as her handmaiden arrived and served the tea.

"Thank you, my Queen," Rosalind took a sip before lowering the teacup, covering it with the saucer. She straightened in her seat, placing her hands on the table with her fingers intertwined, and said, "The prince has not done much, I’m afraid, although he’s quite secretive and even I can’t read his intentions until he’s done it."

"I understand, you, child, men are...." Queen Maeve said while stroking her hair and thinking of the word for it, "Unpredictable." She smiled with no sincerity in her eyes, "However, you should know one or two of his antics, right?"

"None, my queen. Even as a bed companion, Prince Aldric hardly discusses anything with me. I’ve never seen a Fae more paranoid than him. I’m ashamed to say this but he’s hard to win over and there’s only a few things I can do without being found suspicious. " Rosalind shook her head sadly and the light in Queen Maeve’s eyes vanished, the warmth leaving the room as well. Rosalind shuddered at the swift change in her demeanor.

"Then why have you summoned me, child?" She asked grimly, a tick in her jaw, evidence of her holding back the anger.

Rosalind revealed, "The human, Islinda. Aldric has an odd interest in her."

At once, the queen relaxed and though she was burning with curiosity, she managed to ask calmly, "Tell me more."

Rosalind looked at her unsure, "I’m guessing you already know that she’s involved with your son –"

"My son had a temporary lapse of judgment," Queen Maeve cut her off strictly.

She continued, "However, trust me. Valerie is back to his senses. He has nothing to do with that human scum anymore. It’s not his fault that those pathetic mortals can help but get attracted to our kind. Every big predator must learn to draw in prey, don’t you think so?" The Queen’s fierce eyes collided with Rosalind’s, startling her.

"What?" Rosalind was taken off-guard but was quick to cover up with a nervous smile, "Of course, you’re right. Humans can’t help fantasizing about us, foolish creatures." She said all those words to flatter her.

Rosalind looked at the Queen hoping to have left her impressed, but she was frowning instead.

"You said the damned demon is interested in humans? You think he has fallen for her?" Her expression brightened, "If that’s the case, then we can use her against him. She wouldn’t last anyway and would have served a big purpose for us."

"No, my Queen. I don’t think Aldric is interested in her romantically, however, he wouldn’t mind having her. But Islinda expresses concern that Prince Aldric intends to use her against Valerie."

"What?!" The Queen shouted in disbelief. She then shot up to her feet and paced across her room," I was hoping to finish her off at the ball but only the gods know what that damned demon Aldric might do to my son before then." She turned to Rosalind, "We have to get rid of her before then."

Rosalind stood up, "That is my intention as well, my Queen, which is why I had to seek your approval in case you had any objection to it." She added carefully, "Your son Valerie once had a fascination for the human, after all. I thought maybe..... "

"Are you kidding me?" The Queen scoffed, glaring at her with so much intensity she almost stumbled back from fear.

The Fae Queen closed the distance between them and pronounced, "Get. Rid. Of. The. Human."

Rosalind nodded rigidly, forgetting how to breathe, "Yes, my Queen, I’ll do just that."

"Good." The Queen said, the malevolence surrounding her vanished as she returned to her once cheerful self. She reached out and cupped Rosalind’s cheek with surprising tenderness, "Just hang in there, child. Your name will never be forgotten for doing this great service for our people."

"Thank you, Queen Mother." Rosalind believed her.

The Queen looked towards the door, "You should leave before your absence is noticed and your cover is blown."

"I’ll leave then, my Queen." Rosalind bowed her head and moved in the direction of the door. Now that the decision had been made, it was time to execute the plan.
