_______________
Issac stayed true to his word and did not tell anyone about the incident. However, Islinda was nervous and skittish for the rest of the day, jumping at the smallest noise and expecting Aurelia to burst into the room, having solved the mystery behind the missing knife.
And then there was the other problem, the Ravens. They flew away earlier and Islinda did not doubt that they were going to tattletale on her to their master, Aldric.
Damn, those birds.
Now, what was Aldric going to do? Would the dark Fae prince be so furious when he returns that he puts her under house arrest. It was boring enough staying all alone in the castle, if Islinda were to be confined to her room, she would surely lose her mind.
Islinda and Issac spent almost the whole afternoon in each other’s presence and to be honest, their current relationship dynamics were a bit weird. She was used to quibbling with him, and Issac throwing back blunt retorts. This sudden truce between them was not entertaining. Who even waved the white flag first?
Islinda could have argued it was Issac who surrendered, but then, the Fae saved her and was keeping her secret. But at the same time, Issac too asked a favor from her. Oh yes, a favor she had no idea how to fulfill.
To be honest, Islinda did not know the full details of the soul swap incident aside from her own experience and the snippets she caught when Andre visited. But Issac told her everything and the thought that Valerie made him steal a lock of her hair made her stomach churn.
She unconsciously reached for her hair and felt it before protectively wrapping her arms around herself. Was she not safe in Aldric’s castle?
At first, Islinda was furious at Isaac, but the Fae had no choice and if she were in his position, she would have done the same. If there was anyone to direct her anger to, It should be Valerie. Sadly, there was no way she could meet and confront him. Unless of course, Aldric permitted it.
But the winter prince would never permit it. Aldric hardly trusted her. Why would he hand her to Valerie on a platter of gold unless of course he had an ulterior motive and it benefitted him? Islinda shook her head with a sigh, it felt like she was stuck in a game of tug of war with two unruly children. And she, unfortunately, was the prize.
Whoever thought a love triangle was romantic must be out of her mind and not in her shoes. Not that Aldric was interested in her romantically. He merely needed her for the throne and his sexual gratification. Aldric had so much darkness inside of him that he was not capable of loving.
In the end, Islinda agreed to help Issac even though she had this inkling it would not work out. For starters, there was no sign of Aldric. Even if the dark Fae prince were to return, she would have to strike a deal with him. What if the price was too much to pay? Her focus should be on escaping and not making more wretched deals with the damn Fae that might trap her in the realm further.
Islinda was once more in the large dining hall having her dinner alone. She had tried looking for Issac to invite him to dine with her, craving his companionship, but the servants reported they had not caught sight of him since night fell.
And as for Rosalind.
Islinda could not forget the disappointment on the Fae’s face when she saw her return with Issac. It then hit Islinda that Rosalind might have been watching her all those while and did not interfere.
The Fae would undoubtedly argue that this was all a ploy to draw Aldric out and coming in would ruin the whole thing, as well as expose that the both of them were in cahoots.
Of course, Islinda understood her point, but now, there was that doubt gnawing inside of her. Rosalind wanted her out of the picture. The Fae loved Aldric so much that she wanted to eliminate any form of competition, believing that she - Islinda - might have feelings for Aldric.
As if.
Islinda would not bother wasting her breath explaining to Rosalind that she had no real feelings for Aldric. It seems not just humans, but Fae when in love only believed what they wanted to and tended not to think critically.
What if she had ended up stabbing herself and Aldric still did not show up? Would Rosalind have taken her to the healer or left her there to bleed out and die? Either way, Rosalind would be the one benefiting from her demise. Not to mention, it would have been the easiest way to get rid of her without suspicion of foul play. Islinda shuddered at the thought.
She didn’t want to die that way, not like a chicken. Imagine slitting her own throat. Islinda finally realized how stupid she had been. So she gave Rosalind the cold shoulder for the rest of the day. She knew the Fae would confront her sooner or later and might try to instigate her into making another reckless plan.
But Islinda was wiser now and would not be roped into foolishly threatening her life once again. She was in charge now and would find another way to draw Aldric back to the castle that didn’t involve inflicting harm on herself
Nothing eventful happened after dinner, nor did Rosalind seek her out. Islinda tucked herself in bed and was staring up at the ceiling when something hit her.
Oh no.
She climbed out of bed and lifted the mattress only to find nothing. She searched the pillow, but still nothing. Islinda then paced the room, scratching her head as she was deep in thought.
Where was the book, Morning Glory?
Her life has been a cacophony of drama that the book has not registered in her mind until now. Unfortunately, she can’t seem to find it now she needed it. Islinda raked her brains hard, trying to recall the last time she used the book. It was the night of the soul swap....
Oh fuck.
It couldn’t be that Aldric has it.
Islinda had to calm herself down. For all she knows, one of the servants might have found it while cleaning up, after all, she had not slept in her room that night. Islinda made up her mind to ask the servants about the book tomorrow - even though describing the book might be a bit embarrassing.
With a groan, Islinda went back to bed. She turned and tossed for a while before ultimately falling asleep. However, It must have been late at night when she heard the knock at her door.
