Mated To The Cruel Prince -
Chapter 153: A New Purpose
Chapter 153: A New Purpose
Standing ramrod straight with his head lifted high, Issac started, "Perhaps before we go into how to regain your purpose, we should consider why you needed that sense of purpose in the first place. Is it for the sake of control, satisfaction, and general contentment?"
"Are you seriously asking me that?" Aldric shot him a dark look that spoke volumes. He was not impressed with his question.
Issac realized what he had done wrong. Of course, the dark prince’s purpose in life was causing chaos and hoping to gain the throne one day. Everything he was doing and had done so far was to recover what he claimed was stolen from him. If this was the case, then there was no way in this life that he would tell the prince that doing something kind for others can make him feel as though his life has meaning. Aldric would surely kill him this time.
He bowed his head, "My apologies, my prince."
Aldric snorted derisively, "If I needed a motivational speech, I would have read it instead...." He lifted a book on the desk to prove his point, "What I want from you Issac is a solution to my current problem, boredom. My sense of purpose has no problem and is as clear as day. So if you have nothing to offer me, you can use the door."
"You should do something you love then!" Issac shouted before the prince kicked him out. And the worse, he didn’t even know why he was trying so hard to convince him.
"Issac," Aldric chuckled in a way that made goosebumps spread over his arms, "Trust me, if I do what I want, there would be no population left in Astaria."
"No, I don’t mean that, but hobbies!" He groaned, rubbing his temple. Prince Aldric was not easy to deal with either. Why were people in his life so difficult?
"Hobbies?" Aldric frowned.
"Yes, hobbies. Purpose changes over time and to be honest, I didn’t join the loyal army because I loved it."
"Oh," Aldric said, sensing a story there and he gestured his hand and shadows appeared at the far end of the room, tangible enough to pull forward a seat for Issac.
"Sit. Now continue." Aldric interlocked his fingers together and placed his jaw on it, waiting eagerly for Issac to continue his storytelling.
Issac shivered at the hungry glee in the prince’s eyes, he was much more bored than he thought. Nonetheless, he took the seat and settled down facing Prince Aldric.
"My father was in the royal army as well." Issac revealed, waiting for Aldric to comment on it, but nothing happened and he carried on, "He was the captain of his squad and was beloved by all until he was killed during the epic hunt of the dark Faeries."
"A tragic beginning, Interesting.
A sad story is compelling to readers who connect to real-life emotions and sympathize with the character. So what happened next, Issac? You decided to follow in your father’s footsteps to carry on the legacy?"
Issac was dumbfounded. Usually when people heard his story, not that he told it much, they identified with his loss, but the dark prince merely treated it like a tale. He was annoyed with Aldric’s nonchalance, but then, the dark prince was not normal anyway.
Aldric must see the anger on his face and realized what he did, because he shrugged innocently, popping a snack Issac did not notice on his desk until now into his mouth,
"Don’t look at me that way, I lost my mother too. Also, the dark Faeries your father killed probably had loved ones, it’s an endless circle that we cannot escape from." That was his excuse.
Issac pinched the space between his brows, he couldn’t even argue this one. So he continued instead.
"Yes, you’re right, I joined the army to follow in his footsteps. My father was my hero and I idolized him so much and felt compelled to complete what he started. It was not easy but I was a quick study and climbed through the ranks easily. I went wherever I was deployed without so much a question asked and did whatever I was commanded to. Not long after, I got promoted to captain too. "
Aldric said, "I’m much more concerned about how we never get to meet."
"Oh, we did meet once in a joint mission but you never gave me a second glance, I was probably not worth your attention."
"Indeed." Aldric shamelessly admitted.
The prince was brutally honest and that was a trait Issac admired, yet ouch. It hurt his pride.
"Go on then, I can’t wait to hear the moral of the story and how that applies to me," Aldric said, with a mouthful of snacks.
On the bright side, Aldric was at least attentive to the story even though he wasn’t sympathetic to it.
"I got bored in no time," Issac continued, "All that bloodshed, death, and for whom? A father that was long gone? For a legacy that most Faeries didn’t even care about unless it benefitted them? I felt like a fraud, like I have been living in someone else’s skin all along. I was confused and didn’t know what to do or where to start anymore. My father and the army were all I have ever known. Where was I even going to start? Wasn’t it a little bit too late to start from the beginning?"
"However, during that confusion, I realized there was something that I felt compassionate about and loved to do even in the army. And it was protecting Faeries and keeping the kingdom safe. I asked to be transferred to the palace and though I wasn’t selected for the King’s army, I was doing something I loved. Not to mention, it allowed me to spend time with my mother and sister. It was the best decision that I ever made until I met you."
"The end." Aldric clapped his hands for joy at the conclusion of the story even though the ending was an obvious insult to him.
But Aldric did not care, after all, he gave Issac a new purpose, didn’t he?
