Chapter 788: Chapter 529: Once (First Update) _1
Standing quietly at the entrance, Mu Lin saw Muxue silently sitting at the bedside, a smile that strained at the corners of her mouth so tender. But Mu Lin, inexplicably, blinked against a sudden sting and an urge to weep.
If only, she truly wished Muxue would sob wholeheartedly, to let a good loud cry vent her emotions; a restrained smile like this, only stirred a helpless sorrow.
She was never good with comforting words.
A tear slid down, she reached out and instinctively touched her cheek.
"Why am I crying?" Even my auntie hasn’t cried, so why am I crying?! Gong Yu’s voice carried a touch of confusion. She sniffled, "I don’t know why. I really didn’t want to cry, but the tears just can’t stop falling." She couldn’t blame herself. Turning her gaze towards Mu Lin, she asked, "Sister, auntie should be alright now, right?" At least, she was now smiling.
But her smile, only caused her heartache.
"She should be okay, mother is...talking with father, I think." Was she truly speaking to her father from her heart? Mu Lin wondered. Whenever Master was alone, did he also talk to his own distant mother like this?
Even though they couldn’t hear him.
Gong Yu nodded as if she understood.
"Let’s go, we should wait outside." Saying this, Mu Lin walked to the outside, Gong Yu sighed and followed her out.
Auntie, are you really okay? Gong Yu didn’t know for sure.
But, if Mu Lin said she’s fine, then she should be fine.
In fact, Gong Yu had thought; is auntie now possibly more miserable than when she was in insane, at least during those times, auntie used to have an unforced and genuine smile. Now, her smile... It was terribly forced, very forced indeed.
She wiped away the edge of her tear-stained cheeks and pulled up a corner of her mouth.
A smile should be as natural as this, much better looking.
...
Outside the house, Mu Lin placed the water bucket on the side, and attentively watered the herbal medicine with a wooden ladle, her manner careful, her mood calm.
She thought that Muxue would still need time before coming out.
Following in her footsteps, Gong Yu helped her with the chores.
Back in the Gong Family, her grandpa sometimes took care of the medicinal field by himself, he did it bit by bit, very carefully, and he wouldn’t even let her touch, fearing she’d unintentionally harm them.
To a doctor, herbs were indeed invaluable, especially rare and precious ones. If you carelessly killed these herbs, no amount of money could replace them.
If she had killed one of them, her grandpa might have gone berserk.
Time passed silently, after nearly half an hour, Muxue finally came out from Mu Jue’s room.
"Auntie." Seeing Muxue, Gong Yu joyously called out to her. Muxue flashed a faint smile which thankfully didn’t look as heart-wrenching and pitiful as before, it certainly looked better.
"Mom." Mu Ling set down her work and stood up to meet Muxue.
"Linlin is tending to the herbs." Muxue stepped down, a light smile on her face as she gazed upon the plant. "Did you know, your father used to love to care for the herbs in the medicinal field too. There were several times when I got jealous, I said that he valued the herbs more than me. Now that I think about it, I was really naive back then." Pity that scene could only exist in her memories henceforth.
Looking at Mu Lin attentively tending to the herbs, Muxue even had a moment of confusion, it was as if...I was seeing Mu Jue. Was this how he tended to the plants?
Mu Jue, she found this name was very pleasant to hear.
Mu Jue, she knew why he chose this name. Muxue knew, partly because of her name containing ’mu’ , and the other part showing his determination to sever all ties with the Tang Family, "jue" also meant absolute rejection; since he wished it so, she would no longer call him by his former name.
From now on, the man she loved, his name, would only be Mu Jue.
Hearing Muxue’s words, Mu Lin offered a small smile, "Actually, these herbs, master mostly took care of them before, I only gathered them. Many times, I preferred to venture into the Black Forest to gather herbs that we didn’t have here, and I’d give them to master to plant." When feeling lazy, she’d simply pick those near the house.
