Mated at First Sight -
Chapter 716 - 473
Chapter 716: 473
Almost at the same time, Mu Lin and Jing Chen did not hesitate to take action.
Before anyone could react, two bullets had already been fired, causing a shock among those around them, who quickly surrounded and protected their leaders.
The power of a handgun, after all, is not as formidable as a sniper rifle. Even though Mu Lin shot right at the target, she only managed to deflect the opponent’s bullet slightly, not stopping it entirely.
The second bullet seemingly sped out at the exact moment the two bullets collided. The next moment, sparks burst forth as the two bullets buried themselves directly into the ground. Jing Chen’s bullet, however, flew unapologetically towards the sniper.
Unfortunately, the distance was too great, and the shot did not hit its target.
On the other side, Vasily’s associates had already instructed their men to chase in the direction of the sniper, while they were escorted back into the museum once again.
The elder glanced at Jing Chen. Jing Chen nodded and turned to Mu Lin, "Stay here, be careful." He would handle the rest.
Mu Lin nodded, "Stay safe." She advised instinctively.
After another nod of acknowledgment, Jing Chen quickly ran in the given direction.
Despite the danger, it was thankfully just a false alarm. The elder looked at Mu Lin, with a hint of concern in his eyes, "Girl, are you alright?" He had heard from Jing Chen that Mu Lin had not been feeling well these past few days. He initially thought that a breath of fresh air might be beneficial, but they never expected such an incident to occur.
"I’m fine," Mu Lin shook her head with a faint smile in response to the elder’s question. The elder nodded in relief.
If it weren’t for Mu Lin’s alertness, he might not have evaded that bullet just now.
The elder had heard of Mu Lin’s shooting skills, but he hadn’t expected her powers of observation and marksmanship to match those of Jing Chen.
For the first time, the elder felt that letting Mu Lin serve only as a military doctor would be a huge waste. However, not being a military doctor could introduce her to the harsher realities of the troop. Moreover, it seemed even more of a waste if she wasn’t serving as a military doctor.
It seemed a hard choice either way; thus, letting her do as she pleased was probably the best option.
Ying Sun had a stern expression as he carefully observed their surroundings. Er Fei, Wu Ya, and two others once again inspected the entire exterior of the museum. After confirming there was no danger, they returned and kept a close watch.
The response and coordination of the group earned the surprise and admiration of the soldiers from E Country.
Vasily only felt mixed emotions when he looked at Mu Lin; he had previously only seen the exceptional bravery and fearlessness of the young girl on the screen. Seeing her in person evoked a sense of awe.
Honestly, he didn’t have anyone as extraordinary as Mu Lin and Jing Chen protecting him. Having such guardians would undoubtedly bring peace during sleep. No wonder she, being so young, was kept close; initially, he thought it was due to her status as a military doctor given her age. Apparently, he had underestimated her.
Military personnel’s strength, ability, perception, marksmanship, and more were indeed not to be underestimated. This was a reality he had to face; what he had heard previously was secondary.
The so-called faith in the hearts of military personnel is often beyond the understanding of people from many countries; after all, it has been passed down from ancient times.
A few minutes later, Jing Chen came back from outside, and shook his head slightly at the elder. "By the time our people arrived, the opponents had already retreated swiftly. However, I found this over there." Jing Chen pulled out a bullet shell and handed it over.
He conjectured that the sniper probably did not anticipate their swift response and unintentionally left this behind in a hurry.
Despite this, Jing Chen had a lingering doubt that the sniper was probably a recruit, as there seemed to be considerable flaws in their plan.
The elder took the bullet shell but just nodded quietly without asking further. He then handed the bullet shell over to his men. This incident happened in E Country, so naturally, they would investigate it squarely.
Fearing that the opponents might have further ambushes or assassination attempts planned, the party concluded their arrangements and returned to the villa. Vasily apologized to the elder. Such an incident occurring at his territory was regrettable and challenging to justify.
Above all, the actual aim of the attack.
If pursued, it would be a big problem for them; the debt of gratitude they owed, internal or external, was to the elder.
Fortunately, the elder did not press further, which allowed Vasily to breathe a sigh of relief. With this incident added to the previous one, the debt he owed had significantly increased.
In the hall of the villa, the party sat down while Mu Lin lazily sprawled herself there, her calm eyes resting on Jing Chen and the others.
"So, you’re suggesting that the other party wasn’t actually trying to take my life this time?" The elder turned towards Jing Chen, Jing Chen nodded, "It’s just a guess at this point. The person is either a novice or intentionally left the bullet casings behind, perhaps hoping to drive a gap between us and E Country."
But a guess is just a guess after all.
The elder pondered and then looked at Zhan Zhong, "What do you think?"
Zhan Zhong was deliberate, "I believe, the one behind this doesn’t have to be from E Country." The answer to this question was quite apparent. The people of E Country wouldn’t be this foolish, especially when they’ve always had cordial relations with us.
"Hmm." Upon hearing this, the elder nodded. He thought the same; but as to which country was involved, that remained unclear. After all, Jing Chen had noted earlier, the assassin seems to belong to some mercenary organization.
Supporting his head in his hand, Mu Lin looked at the elder. A slight smile curled at the corner of his lip, mockingly at the elder, "Old man, there seem to be quite a number of people who want your life." They were truly the most valuable pawns.
Firstly, poison stealthily administered over ten years and now, assassination attempts.
Tsk, tsk, tsk, assassinations so interesting that it was impossible to anticipate. "However, the people who are after me are less merciful than those after you." Mu Lin suddenly sighed.
Yet, at Mu Lin’s statement, the elder slightly furrowed his brow, "People trying to kill you?" This was the first time he had heard of it; he had only heard of the Poison Doctor killing without batting an eye.
However, the elder did not believe that the girl before him was capable of such a thing.
Mu Lin nodded, having a look of complete nonchalance on his face. "I experienced numerous assassination attempts when I was a teenager. Every time, the organization would send a group of assassins after me." One is simply not enough to entertain her, which is why, Mu Lin felt, "It seems like you’re a bit luckier than me, old man." At least, nobody has been bold enough to openly try to take his life.
Listening to Mu Lin, the elder let out a chuckle, his expression somewhat helpless, "What on earth are you saying." She was defining the situation as more or less lucky. It seemed unbelievable that she was equating such matters to luck. He was at a loss trying to fathom the working of her bizarre mind.
However, looking at Mu Lin, the elder felt an unexplainable concern for the young girl standing in front of him, nonchalantly smiling.
Such a young girl, just in her twenties, had already endured so much. The honor and disrepute she carries, the glory of B City and the infamous legends, appears that she has a lot of stories to tell.
No wonder she has grown into such a courageous and adept individual. Having survived numerous assassinations at a young age, a group of assassins each time, it was unimaginable how she managed to evade them, being the loner that the Poison Doctor was.
And now, she is talking about it casually.
The elder sighed somewhat, with a shade of regret. How inappropriate to feel compassion under these circumstances. Not only the elder but Zhan Zhong too, who has gradually started changing his impressions about Mu Lin, was taken aback by her statement.
Perhaps, it was because of those experiences that she grew into the renowned Poison Doctor she is today.
If it weren’t for the presence of his unit, Jing Chen would have held Mu Lin in his embrace by now.
Even though he already knew and has been through so much with her, listening to her narrate those experiences so casually still pained him.
If it were possible, Jing Chen would rather bear all the hardships she had faced in her place. Or rather, Jing Chen often wished that if they had met a little earlier, could things have been different? Would he have been able to protect her better?
There wasn’t much to be said about such matters.
Because if, it was one of the most impossible and ridiculous things in the world.
But Mu Lin as she stands here, seemingly indifferent and carefree, yet manages to arouse deep compassion in the onlookers. She probably didn’t anticipate this reaction when she said it.
After all, she never cared about, or thought too much about, these matters in the past and only mentioned them casually just then.
Ultimately, the one who died wasn’t her, Mu Lin chimed, though it did waste a lot of her good stuff, she wasn’t the one who ended up at a loss.
Early next day, Mu Lin and the group left E Country, reaching back around six in the evening, an neither early nor late timing.
After escorting the elder back to his office residence, Ying Sun’s men headed straight back to the military area, while Mu Lin and Jing Chen returned to the Jing’s residence.
Seeing Mu Lin, the elder’s face broke into a genuine smile; Mu Lin couldn’t help but wonder, if he knew the truth, would his smiling face become even more wrinkled?
Well, that was just her daydreaming.
However, regarding the fact that Jing Chen didn’t take Mu Lin home last time, the old Mr. Jing sternly reprimanded Jing’s grandfather without restraint.
Tsk, tsk, tsk, he really didn’t hold back at all.
